So it was confirmed on Friday the Crows officially signed Kayleigh Cronin as a rookie for next season;

So given Boyle-Carr isn’t looking like being promoted they’ll be running with 2 rookies & 28 primary players on the list, you can up to 3 rookies make up the 30 on the list, so only 2 picks will be taken on Monday (12 & 43)… Finally was able to clarify that as I found the relevant part in the latest collective bargaining agreement

I saw Gemma Bastiani from AFL media was trying to rival myself to be Charlotte Riggs’ biggest fan by the looks of things…

Rightfully points out her ability to impact at ground level separates her from the other talls in the draft…

Speaking of the draft that’s happening on Monday night, here’s my quick, rough & likely bit inaccurate look at what could unfold & happen in the draft based on nothing more than a few SANFLW games I’ve seen and highlights & reports I’ve read & seen as well.

Looking at pick 12 you’d imagine given the list make-up, list weaknesses & type of players they didn’t bring in during the trade period the first preference will/should be a key position tall, the only real spanner in the works for mine that could change that thinking is Georgia McKee the small forward from Centrals who I’ve mentioned before and is the player who I think would have the most immediate impact whilst still fixing what is also an area of need.

If Riggs & Poppy Scholz are both gone by 12 then I think maybe the Crows definitely then are likely to pivot to someone like McKee or her fellow Centrals teammate Jasmine Evans (someone that’s always caught the eye; high IQ & very skillfull) also if teams in front of the Crows take those talls and someone like Vic Metro’s Sierra Grieves falls to pick 12 they definitely should take her as she looks absolute class.

If they are still hell bent on a key position player at 12 the only other alternatives around that mark look to be Vic Country’s Ellie Symonds (Dandenong Stingrays 178cm Ruck/Forward) or they would have to reach for a Claire Mahony (GWV Rebels 181cm Forward) or Georgie Brisbane (Eastern Ranges 175cm Forward) who are predicted to be more around that 19-25 mark.

The next pick at 43 will be a lottery, like I’ve mentioned I have a sneaky feeling they’ll want to look interstate like last year. If they do pivot & go small at 12 from looking through the prospects there would still be a few good but very raw talls available, I would definitely be more in the camp of drafting McKee at 12 if you were confident someone like Lexi Gregor (181cm Fwd/def from Bendigo) would somehow slide that far (marking level is probably only behind Riggs) or that Brisbane wouldn’t match a bid on Chloe Gaunt, a 182cm forward who’s another tall off the QLD production line & looks like has a bit of a presence (Brisbane have not always matched from memory).

A bit of a forgotten player who could still be there is Esther Schirmer who was massive down back for South Adelaide in their premiership campaign but would probably only be considered if they were looking to turn ether Biddell or S.Allan into a more permanent forward option, but Schirmer is a decent player & has played a lot of high level footy for someone her age.

If they do take a tall at 12 filling other gaps on the list then should be the priority, given SA’s top talent will already be gone with McKee & Evans taken by 30 at the latest & Grace Martin from WWT likely to not make it to that pick 43 either, Laela Ebert a Mid/HB is probably the best of them left but like I’ve previously said at this point of the draft they should look to some more mature talent instead, would rather someone who can impact straight away over taking a chance/throwing the pick away on some interstate 18 year old who won’t be close to playing next year but they rated at 25 so chose to pick them.

If interested Rookie Me Central have dropped all the players I mentioned highlights packages on their YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/@rookiemecentral?si=DkdzXS15H0NrtiPf

My personal favourites for pick 12;

Charlotte Riggs 🙌

Georgia McKee ⭐

Sierra Grieves 👀

A lot of these girls won't want to move unless they are on Tier 1, surely? Until they are full time players, I can't see how a fully national draft is either fair or could work.
How ‘National’ this ‘National Draft’ is is already very questionable it’s certainly more of a AFL buzzword and doesn’t have much substance behind it, it’s certainly more so to claim full equalisation is in place to try to sell to the NSW teams and the lower placed Vic teams that they will be able make their way up the ladder through attacking the draft.

Were already some whispers over the weekend of quite a few players telling teams from a different state not to not pick them… also despite them now making it a compulsory 2-year contract sign on for new draftees I expect someone like India Rasheed if she gets taken as predicted by Sydney or West Coast she will still try to get to Port Adelaide next year.

Tier 4 players get $67,337 per year in 2025, and it will continue growing. That's not so far behind the $90,000 that AFL rookies receive, although obviously those players will be hoping to get a massive pay rise if they solidify their spot. Still, we're at a stage now where it's feasible for women to move on that salary, although it will need to rise in the future. You've got to start somewhere though.

Of course, there's nothing stopping players from just going to whoever drafts them, and then asking for a trade back after one or two seasons.

Melbourne go for O'Hehir rather than Zippy Fish, that will make things interesting going forward!

Not that we're any realistic chance of getting Fish, but maybe it will lead to someone sliding down to our pick.
Zippy to Sydney, don’t think it will impact too much most just drop down a pick in the top 8, probably just annoys Carlton a little.

Edit: Carlton take Scholz

I’m not too bothered with Scholz not being available I think the Crows would’ve taken her if she was available but I’ve not rated her overly highly, only excelled when she was moved to play that easier 3rd/loose intercepting role down back for SA & Glenelg

Geelong gets Gregor, liked the look of her… Grieves goes next really liked her

Rasheed still available, unbelievable… so is Riggs… go the port or the crows fan?
