"Hawthorn is expected to trade for Allen"

WADA or ASADA need to pay a visit to the list management team. Allen has been on a steep decline for a couple of seasons now. Her weapon was her aerobic capacity, now she can't run and her skills are poor!! This is a very poor move.

I'm sad about Baskaran and I will watch her career closely, but we have recruited well in her position so I can't blame her for seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Breed leaving would be devastating. I think she's an amazing player who hasn't reached her potential yet, and she is so versatile, so replacing her would also be difficult.

AFL.com.au sounding unfortunately a bit more definitive about Breed leaving.
Hawthorn has been linked to Melbourne forward Tayla Harris to strengthen an already-strong attack, while the Hawks look set to lose both Charlotte Baskaran and Mattea Breed. Because of this, increasing their midfield depth – particularly big-bodied midfielders – will be important if they are to go better than its straight-sets finals exit in 2024. Should it lose both Baskaran and Breed, the Hawks will take a strong hand into the draft, which has a glut of highly talented midfielders to choose from.

After last season and the big list turnover we had then only to finish as high as we did, have to trust the list management team now imo. Not sure how Coyne and Allen will fit in our backline bit will see. Versatility seems to be a common theme with most of our recruiting.

Losing both Breed and Baskaran (and Deed) is a hit to the midfield, but expected teams to be after our players. Stone will get plenty of chances now too, plus whomever they're likely to draft.

Losing Baskaran is a hit to the future. Breed is a massive hit, but we became very reliant her her grunt work late in the year. When Brisbane and Port took her out of the contest we were exposed.

Deed is a hit to the depth, can't even recall if she played a game to be honest

Baskaran looks good until there's pressure, then she crumbles and panics. She is not overly quick, so doesn't have any real weapons to escape the heat of the contest. Deed is nowhere near AFLW standard. Whilst I don't believe we will miss them from an on-field perspective, they are both are top shelf humans and are good for culture!

Breed is a must keep. She is only scratching the surface with the mid role. Another full preseason to build her tank and she will take more strides forward.

Our team is too tall and slow in the back line and forward line. Coyne has speed and composure under pressure, which fills a desperate need in the back line. Her skills are the big issue at the moment for a role there though.

I hope it's just a contract standoff that is solvable through higher pay / longer years.

Two big concerns though - if she wants to be in a higher pay tier that we won't have the pay scale to meet her requests, with the likes of Harris potentially coming in combined with our other high profile players we have brought in from other clubs on assumedly higher tiers to defect (Ashmore, Gilroy, TLR, Bates, Bodey, West & Sheriff in particular). I believe you can only have so many players in the defined pyramid-shaped pay tiers each season.

The other concern as I put up on the previous page, clearly she still feels the pull of Adelaide in that she moved back there temporarily in the offseason last year . Homesickness would be a harder problem to solve.

Breed is a must keep (unless she is moving back to ADL which as streetspirit mentioned is harder to control)

Not fussed losing Baskaran based on what I have seen. She is young and has time on her side but I can't see her filling a prominent role in the side in the next few years.

Absolutely don't see the need for Tayla Harris but I will trust the recruiting department based on their recent success with recruits.

Baskaran is no real loss she hardly played and hardly impacts, will take the good draft pick every day. I like Breed but her decision making needs work and kicking not great and we have Bates and West inside and Jaz both in and out. Stone is coming and long term is a far better prospect. We have wings sorted with Williamson and McLaughlin and can add another good mid this draft. Need a gun D1 so Richo and Everest can play D2/3. Could still be Mack Eardley think she’s going to be a star but where who knows? Don’t think we want for much else. Unsure on trade targets but have to back their judgment.

This makes it seem like our first round pick is in the gun if we agree to a 'mega deal' for both Harris and Allen in one hit

Harris is yet to formally request a trade away from Melbourne but has a clear preference to get to Hawthorn...
...
However, the six-club deal hinges on whether Hawthorn would be willing to part with pick No.14 as part of a trade for Harris and [Nadwa] Allen, with the likelihood still being that the deals are broken up independently.
...
Talks have also been held for Baskaran to head to St Kilda and for Allen to get to Hawthorn separately to any potential six-club trade, with both having already formally requested moves.

Saying our backline needs to get smaller is certainly a take and then some given it was Richardson at 170cm that was our main lock down defender, Everist at 179cm the tallest and Kemp (170cm) and Elliott (172cm) were the others and they all almost always played on bigger matchups every game. Add in 163cm and 160cm TLR and Smith respectively and I'm not sure how you make them smaller without deciding to turn the whole team into an Auskick side.

But agree with most of the rest.

I really hope our first isn't used in both those trades, that feels like paying overs a lot. Why is Harris worth more now after playing less for Melbourne when they traded for her? Allen also seems to be an injury risk at her stage of career.

Anyway, it's shaping up as we are expecting to take just the minimum 2 picks in the draft...does mean if all these trades are expected to happen there's at least 1 more delist or trade out coming:

Out (4):
Deed, Dumont
Breed, Baskaran

In (5):
Coyne
Harris, Allen
2x Draftees

Good point. Sorry, my wording was totally wrong. We need more speed and agility in the back line and forward line.

I'll be gutted if Mattea is off :( She was awesome this year and really gave us some power through our midfield.

Interesting Mattea didn’t poll very well in the bnf. Her votes seem unders based on watching games but evidently wasn’t executing her role to a very high standard.

Certainly has scope for a lot of growth in her game though

Disagree on Charlotte. She isn't an inside player, but she is a smart player and a good decision maker. There's a reason every posession she gets is part of a scoring chain. Obviously not the type Webster wants in the team, but she will thrive at the saints.

Agree on mattea.

Our backline is too short and weak, not tall.
Continually outdone for height, and nowhere near strong enough. It's a lot like the hawks 2011 backline in the mens. Batting outside their weight class, and doing a massive job

It’s obvious based on your posting history that you’re a big big fan of Baskaran. That’s alright, but don’t spin garbage by claiming all her possessions are a part of a scoring chain….unless you’re referring to a scoring chain for the opposition? Her turnovers under pressure in the season just gone were horrendous.

I like Breed, her aggression, attack and strength are unreal but I think her consistency and disposal let her down quite often. It may be an unpopular opinion but I think we can afford to lose her, especially if we can turn her into something else we need.

Hard to impact when you don’t play seniors much. A good deal if we can use our picks to get up the draft order. How do we get pick 1 for Ash Centra what a gun she will be!

That is true, but Baskaran has had 3 seasons at the level now. She also had a whole preseason to push her case for best 21 with the new coaching group.

If only! Not sure we have the trade capital to get into the top 5, aside from giving away our 1st and two x 2nd round picks. I am not sure I would want to overspend to do this. Seems like pick 14 might be earmarked for someone or something.
