Roberts showed plenty of what she could be, but Pugh's game was much more substantial, certainly in terms of the result. Roberts sprayed it a lot.

You ever get the feel there's a bit of pandering to the WC? 🤔
Yeah, felt Pew Pew should have got a look in as well. My buddy was a rock down there. Clean, precise kicking.

She's filling in that Cuthbo sized hole wonderfully.

Yes, yes and yes. Even from the AFL/W there’s a lot more coverage of the WC Basketcases than an original-of-the-competition club in Freo. It’s never ending.

My buddy Drisco looks set for a big year! What a player - what a character! 🤩

She does at that. Drisco was ever present yesterday. Whenever there was an oppo foray forwards she seemed at the ready to disrupt it.

Someone should put together a lowlights reel of Gibson gobbing off and generally acting the arse, play it to the Freo girls and document the resulting vow never to let that mouthy grub win a derby ever.

She is Not Well.

That was a pretty poor advertisement for the game. Because ground ball gets aren't hoovered up at pace, a lot of womens footy consists of people waiting to instantly tackle the ball-gatherer, inconsequential tackling and secondary ballups. Wrinse and repeat. It's a regular rolling maul. Without the rolling. If I was umpiring, I'd kick half of them out before I balled up.

The weather made it worse and Prior's flooding tactics totally banjaxed it.

Good work from Mim Strom. She's a bloody ripper. Aine Tigh is so good the umpies put the whistle away to even it up a bit.

Also, and this cannot be stated highly enough, Ebony Antonio plays at a whole other level.

Good on the club for trying to spruce up Freo oval by adding the deck and a big screen, but really it's just an awful, awful ground. Seating is horrible and there's hardly any cover anywhere else.

3700 isn't a great crowd for a derby and I can't see numbers getting any better until they improve the spectator amenities.
so right.
For me the screen and the "deck" dont tackle the basics.
Spectator facilities just a bit of a disgrace.
Six portaloos to replace the closed ancient toilet block on the prison side?
Chuck that wretched wind sock in the bin.
And the terraces...
And 300m queues for 3700 souls?
I love community grounds but we can do so much better.

Missed the first quarter. Took 30+ minutes to get into the ground.

Pugh was sensational. Tighe outstanding, given the attention shown to her. Really like the precision kicking through the middle, and generally felt we were holding marks way more often than in previous years. Think that with Turbo back in there, we’ll get a few wins this season.
ONYA Aine!
Laura and Mim...and more!
Yokai!

Seems to me if you end up with Pugh and Roberts both getting 9 coaches votes the medal should go to the player of the winning team.
Has the breakdown of the votes been published anywhere? On the day they said Ella with 7 votes, but didn't give the full count.

I was gobsmacked when I found out the attendance was less than 4K. Had assumed it was going to be closer to 10K given the length of time I queued to get in.
I’m surprised there was even that many given the weather.

In spite of the win, I’m not sure that we looked much better than last season tbh. Compared to the way Melbourne played in their winning game, ours was a really scrappy affair, but will put some of that down to weather conditions for now.

Looking forward to seeing what we can do next week.

Fremantle Dockers AFLW star Ange Stannett opens up on her shock positional switch

Ange Stannett has been one of Fremantle’s best and most consistent defenders for the past few seasons. But then Lisa Webb came to her with a new challenge, writes ELIZA REILLY.

Ange Stannett has spent the past four years mastering the art of defence after making the cross-code switch from soccer to footy.
But after making the move forward this pre-season, she was quick to discover that old habits die hard.

“There were some moments when we were doing match simulation at training where I’d stand the mark on the wrong side of the player with the ball. I learnt pretty quickly after that,” Stannett said.
Stannett has been one of Fremantle’s best and most consistent defenders for the past few seasons. The Dockers call her ‘Smother Teresa’, such is Stannett’s appetite for the all-important defensive act.
But when new coach Lisa Webb floated the shock positional switch, the 26-year-old was confident she had something to offer in attack.
“We were doing a pre-season run together and she said, ‘I think we’re going to throw you around a bit this year. I think you’ll be great in that small forward role’, and I was like, ‘Great, I’m up for it’,” she said.
“She knows I love the learning side of the game. I’ve spent the last few years honing in on the backline. It’s obviously going to be a work in progress but already I’m feeling more confident than I was during week one of pre-season to now.”

Stannett’s defensive traits have also held her in good stead. Although she didn’t hit the scoreboard against West Coast, Stannett laid 10 tackles and had three score involvements from 13 disposals.
“We sometimes forget it but every position on the ground, you need to be able to defend,” Stannett said. “It’s a big thing I want to bring to my game this season, that forward pressure.
“I want to be one of those hard-at-it players, laying those forward 50 tackles, except I’m running defenders down this time.
“It’s exactly the same intent and drive behind my performance, just at the other end of the field.
“I always want to keep my defensive role in my back pocket and that way I can do whatever the team needs. But it’s been a good learning curve so far and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Fremantle kicked off Webb’s reign as coach with an eight-point win. Despite a fierce contest against cross-town rivals West Coast, Stannett said it wasn’t the best account of the Dockers’ new-look game plan.
“We saw glimpses of how we want to play and how we want to move the ball,” Stannett said. “We’re looking for those inside 45s a bit more and we’re trying to play those hit-up kicks. Just with the conditions, it wasn’t going to be the prettiest of footy and we couldn’t be too cute with it.
“We’re so glad that we could get the win. There’s going to be things that we can take away and improve on but especially in front of a home crowd, it was nice to get four points early in the season.”
