I think Tom Wills Oval....even though it's still at Olympic Park will have a very different feel. It'll feel like going 'to the club'.
Agree.

I struggle to get people excited about going to Olympic Park at the best of times....at the mention of Henson it's easy.

I live in that area though. I wonder what the perspective on those who live in Parramatta think...or Penrith.
Stadiums has been an issue for the Giants since day dot.
I live west of Parramatta but east of Blacktown. I probably fall into a demographic that gets excited about going to the inner west.

Last season, mate wasn't keen to come to BISP but came to the Henson Park game despite being from out west. We made a day of it, went to the pub nearby beforehand. Inner West just has a completely different vibe and culture about it that makes you want to go. I'd say we're not alone here.

Completely understand there will be people who don't go because of distance etc but younger demographics may be a lot more open to it even if coming from out west.

In my mind, western Sydney has and always will be such a huge area that even to this day we see arguments about where the west starts so I'm probably a lot more amenable to different locations whereas others seem to get caught up in location specifics.

Eastern Sydney doesn't have this problem and it's a lot smaller, can be easily targetted.

I still have a belief building a good base is more important at this stage than trying to do too much with the huge area that western Sydney is and not particularly succeeding at any of them is more important..before branching out once the base is there.

Plus I'm fairly sure I saw elsewhere that BISP is out due to cricket but not sure how true that is. If BISP was required surely they'd have placed some kind of hold on it for the required dates.

The ability to walk to the game for an AFLW game is not to be overlooked as well. I've been twice with my eldest taking part in the half time games and I'd say the majority are just walking in from the local area.
It was a lazy 15 minute cycle for me and much easier to get friends to than BISP. Now overseas, going to miss it this year :disrelieved: But I also understand the frustration of people who are actually from Western Sydney and find it hard to get to. It's a tricky one.

FWIW it's much easier for me to get to BISP. I'm not walking to either and parking is a lot easier at BISP. :D

I just wish they made it more of a party like they do at Henson Park. But yeah - someone else mentioned cricket. It wouldn't surprise me if they're still vetoing anything we look to do out there outside the bare minimum they can get away with.

Wonder what's up with the Tom Wills upgrade - been two years now.
In my idealised un-reality, I am hoping they are renegotiating for more funding to get 10k seating at TW Oval.
Then we can have an alternate venue for the current 2 month, non-footy bleakness. A nice venue for the AFLW and the men's can host the smaller drawing teams in an appropriate sized ground.

Briana Garvey, head of our women’s football since 2019, is leaving us next month to be the general manager of women's national teams at Football Australia. A loss for us, but best wishes and good luck to her in her new role.

First of the 2024 AFLW season's practice matches upcoming this weekend:

The GIANTS will ramp up their pre-season preparations when they host the crosstown rival Swans in Blacktown on Saturday, August 10 in a Match Simulation Training session.

The hit-out between the fierce rivals will allow the clubs to dictate the conditions of the session, with the clubs to agree beforehand on the number of players used, the game length, and the number of breaks as they clash in preparation for the upcoming AFLW season.

The GIANTS will take their preparations to another level a week later with an official AFLW practice match with the Kangaroos in Blacktown on Saturday, August 17 at 11am.

The GIANTS have announced Collingwood VFLW player Jemma Ramsdale as a replacement player for the 2024 NAB AFLW season.

Ramsdale has signed with the club to replace young gun Daisy Walker who will unfortunately miss the upcoming season with a ruptured ACL. An emerging defender, Ramsdale was overlooked at the 2023 AFLW draft but went on to play 13 of 14 games for Collingwood in their 2024 VFLW campaign this year. The competitive 19-year-old finished the season strongly, recording double digit disposals and averaging 4.25 tackles a game in the last four games of the season with the ‘Pies.

A former representative basketball player with Victoria, Ramsdale transitioned into football at 15 and was quick to pick up the demands of the game. She captained the Dandenong Stingrays in the Coates Talent League in 2023 and was also a member of the U17 Futures game in 2022 as part of the NAB AFLW Futures program, where she was coached by current GIANTS development coach Georgia Walker.

GIANTS AFLW List Manager Tyson Bourke said Jemma is the perfect fit for the club’s list. “We view Jemma as one of the more unlucky players to miss out on selection in last year’s AFLW draft, so we’re extremely excited to have been able to now pick her up,” Bourke said. “We tracked her closely while playing for Collingwood in the VFLW this season and love her aggression, football IQ, competitiveness and ability to play multiple roles behind the ball. We see Jemma as someone who fits the mould of a GIANTS player and person and someone that will fit in well to our existing culture.”

Ramsdale made the move to Sydney earlier this week and will begin training with the club immediately in preparation for the opening round of the AFLW season on Saturday, August 31.

8 new players selected for our match simulation against Sydney Swans today at Blacktown. We then have the preseason match against North next week at Blacktown, before the first AFLW match against the Bulldogs at Manuka.

The story doesn't include the score ...

The GIANTS’ first pre-season hit-out against AFLW opposition proved a fruitful one in Blacktown on Saturday with plenty of learnings coming out of the match simulation against the Swans.

With the AFLW season just three weeks away, the GIANTS ramped up their preparations with a pre-season clash with the Swans played across six 15-minute quarters (plus time-on) in perfect conditions at Blacktown International SportsPark. All but five players on the GIANTS’ 30-player list for the 2024 AFLW season featured in the hit-out, with the likes of Alyce Parker and Nicola Barr showing they’re ready for big seasons with strong performances, while several newcomers impressed in their first hit-out in orange and charcoal.

The GIANTS got off to a strong start in the clash, with Parker and Barr running rampant in the middle early on while Tarni Evans led a rock-solid defence. Up forward Jas Grierson provided a strong target ahead of the ball in her new role in attack from defence, while newcomer Aliesha Newman stood out as she weaved in and out of her former Swans teammates in an impressive showing for her new side.

Georgia Garnett gave the GIANTS the early lead with the first major of the game through a clever soccer goal, while Fleur Davies responded to the Swans’ first goal with a booming 40m set shot in the dying seconds of the opening term to give the GIANTS a five-point quarter-time lead. The Swans managed to get on top of the scoreboard after quarter-time despite the efforts of tackling machine Haneen Zreika and new skipper Bec Beeson, who led from the front in her first outing as GIANTS captain.

Midfield newcomers Mikayla Pauga, Claire Ransom, Indigo Linde and Kaitlyn Srhoj were others to impact the contest throughout the day as they push for a GIANTS debut in season 2024. Fellow newcomer Jemma Ramsdale also took little time to impress in her first appearance in GIANTS colours, with the recent replacement player’s strong defensive prowess on full display. Irish recruit Eilish O’Dowd also looked right at home playing in the ruck in what was her first match against an AFLW opponent just months after moving to Australia and picking up the sport.

A host of regular GIANTS were also strong contributors in the clash with the Swans, with Emily Pease strong around the ball and Jess Doyle lively up forward, while Cambridge McCormick provided some eye-catching dash and dare in her new permanent role across half-back. In further positive both Meghan Gaffney and Annise Bradfield both made successful returns to the field after respective long-term injuries.

Following Saturday’s match, the GIANTS will next take on the Kangaroos in Blacktown in another pre-season hit-out next Saturday before kicking off their 2024 AFLW campaign with an exciting match-up with the Western Bulldogs at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Saturday, August 31.
