True, but we could be the most professional run club in the country and sadly that won't overcome the appeal of a 'big club' for many people. Not necessarily Clarko, but in general.

You look at the NBA and the name recognition and brand power of the Lakers alone compared to the smaller teams.

Personally, I'd find going to a smaller club and lifting it up to a power team infinitely more satisfying than just riding on the coat tails of an already established one.

If Clarko was driven by a big club thing, he could have had Collingwood, a far bigger club than Essendon, who these days are more a medium sized club.

They will carry Rutten's money into their 2023 softcap.

In case people aren't aware, the softcap works as follows:

If you go under $100,000 over the softcap then you pay an extra 75% on that amount.
If you go between $100k and $250k over it is 100% extra in year one, 150% extra in year 2 and 200% extra in year 3.
If you go between $250k and $599k over it is 150% extra in year one, 225% extra in year 2 and 300% extra in year 3.
If you go more than $500k over then it is 200% extra in year one, 300% extra in year 2 and 400% extra in year 3.

Lets say Rutten is only getting $600k a year and that puts Essendon at the softcap then 8m over 5 years is 1.6m and say 1 million over the cap and 1.6m over in 2023 because they have to pay Rutten out.

They would have to pay softcap tax of $3.2m in 2023, $3m in 2024 and $4m in 2025. We don't know what would happen beyond year 3 because nobody has been dumb enough to go over cap.

That would turn his $8m over 5 years into $15m by year 3.

That’s also assuming clarko doesn’t want to bring in anyone

That doesn’t take into account them engineering the Contract to mitigate that full exposure.

So in other words the 1.6 mil Tom Browne reported was accurate… that Clarkson himself said was bullshit. So something isn’t adding up with the numbers.
At that time North had not made any offer so I think Clarko was just playing along with Gerard Whateley purely for the audience they were speaking to.

Ok I just spoke to a source - he says he’s heard the deal for Clarko is $8 million over 5 years. Appears todays GWS announcement has validated Norths position and also lines up with a lot of the info already out about a possible contract signing. He’s hearing 48 hours or thereabouts for an announcement so that’s Thursday. He doesn’t believe Clarkson will be interested in Essendon after all the due diligence he’s done on North however the Essendon crap may have made Clarko/North move a couple of days earlier than they wanted.
As a final point please don’t shoot the messenger this is not my info I’m just passing this on - but my source has been sound so far. If it turns to crud what do you want me to do ………

Maybe I'm missing something here, but what has your source been "sound" on so far? Every time I see an ITK post the goalposts keep moving and the day of the big announcement keeps getting pushed back.

The narrative really changes depending on the timeline in which we believe certain events have occurred, so some scepticism isn't entirely unjustified.

What we do know for a fact is:
GWS & North have both spoken to Clarkson
North have made an offer
GWS are no longer in the race

If we take what has been said in this thread at face value:
  • We met with Clarko in July and got a verbal agreement to coach North next year pending (window dressing)
  • 2 weeks ago Clarko flew up to Sydney to meet with GWS and told them no in person
  • The Clarkson appointment will most likely formally happen this week with an announcement

This all seems to line up with what we know has happened so far, however the * stuff does muddy the waters a little.

If GWS were told no by Clarko 2 weeks ago, why are they only letting it be known now? Could be for a few reasons.
Being a two horse race, GWS announcing anything earlier would almost certainly confirm the coaching appointment at North. Perhaps there are certain stipulations in Clarko's existing Hawks contract (which has been speculated on) which would prohibit an official coaching appointment before the end of the season, giving GWS time to get on the front foot with their own candidates in order to save a bit of face. Could just simply be professional courtesy. All plausible.

This is where it gets a little tricky though.

What else we do know for a fact is:
  • * got humiliated on the weekend
  • There are certain elements within * that would like Rutten gone
  • Rutten is currently contracted for 2023
  • * are s**t campaigners that would thrown their own mothers under a bus if they thought it would give them the success they feel entitled to

If GWS were not in fact told no by Clarko 2 weeks ago and have only just learned this within the last 24 hours then the timeline starts to become a little more concerning IMO. It could be that Clarko feels comfortable officially turning down the GWS job now he has multiple options in VIC. It could be he has finally decided it's a done deal with North and was always going to make his decision this week. Or it could be worst case scenario for us and he is extremely keen on * at the 11th hour despite the fact they will need to knife an incumbent coach first.

How we feel about the sequence of events that have transpired really depends on how much ITK info we choose to believe as fact. IMO if we get to next week and hear nothing then it probably doesn't look good for us, but so far apart from the * media frenzy it's pretty much playing out in our favour.
I was told it was to turn clarko down to. EVERYTHING KITA34 has reported, I have had validated by my ITK person.

I'm confident KITA34 has a source.

If we are to believe all of the ITK posting, Clarkson flew to Sydney for a fourth meeting with no intention of coaching the Giants.

If this is true, then it's very likely that he would take a meeting with Essendon out of character and professionalism. If this is the case, then I believe the quicker the meeting occurs the better it is for us given our soft deadline. In other words, I'm speculating that Clarkson would rush to meet with Essendon in order for him to give a formal rejection, before signing his deal with us.

If I'm right on this, there's going to be a lot of panic in the next 24 hours regarding Clarkson meeting face to face with the Bombers, but if that occurs it'll be a major win for us. If this drags out past next week, then it indicates Clarkson is taking his time to seriously consider Essendon's proposal.

On another topic, it sounds like GWS being ruled out has come from GWS themselves. I'd speculate this is because their own signing is imminent and they want to avoid any potential scrutiny from announcing a coach while still being viewed as in the race for Clarkson.

The difference is that GWS were the only vacancy on the market at the time but he was probably willing. So he'd already met with them a couple of times before we came into the picture. With him wanting to stay in Vic he then felt it necessary to fly up and say no thanks. A meeting with * now would mean he's either the world's most polite man or he changed his mind again. I'll choose to believe it's the former for now but a phone call should be enough to reject those f#%kers

48 hours was also something i just heard on an afl-related discord. they said that same remark about the time frame an hour ago.

maybe it's happening?

Yeah, this is just the assumption that anyone else coming in will fit in to what they are currently paying for other people and there are no contracts in place beyond 2022.

Not shooting the messenger BUT questioning the amount; $8 Million over 5 years is $1.6 Million a year, the exact same figure that Tom Browne reported and that Alastair Clarkson has publicly said is 'bullshit'. I think there's a question over whether that figure is accurate.

Love your work - that’s it in a nutshell. If it goes past next Monday then possibly something has changed so your comments are fair.

To be honest the club needs a big whack if they aren’t sounding out other options?

If Clarkson says he wants time to assess all options, then what’s good for the goose……..
I guess that's what we mean by "soft deadline". Hard deadline would mean yes or no, and we move on. But soft deadline probably means we'd like the answer by wednesday, but if you can't give it to us we will proceed to plan B while still keeping the door open for Clarkson
