Wonthaggi gets its marching orders

Roslyn Lanigan
January 23, 2009

THE power has finally gone out in Wonthaggi's three-year battle to remain in the Alberton Football League.

The much-maligned club will play its final season in South Gippsland's minor league this year, before an enforced switch to a VCFL major league - most likely the West Gippsland Latrobe or Mornington Peninsula Nepean league.

The Victorian Law Institute today upheld a poll of Alberton league clubs held to determine Wonthaggi Power's future in the competition beyond this year.

Alberton league clubs voted 10-4 in favour of Wonthaggi leaving the competition when the vote was conducted at the end of last season.

But the Power's lawyers disputed the validity of the result, arguing one club was not a financial member of the league when the vote was held, according to the VCFL.

The protracted dispute about the Power's future in the league stems from a 2006 VCFL directive for the club to move to a major competition, after some Alberton clubs complained it was too strong for the league's smaller clubs and towns.

The Power was formed in 2005, and the result of a merger between the Wonthaggi Blues and Wonthaggi Rovers.

The Blues, part of major league West Gippsland Latrobe, had been highly competitive in the years leading up to the merger, earning grand final berths in 2001, 2002 and 2004.

The Rovers made finals appearances in the Alberton league in 2002 and 2003.

The combined Power team has won senior premierships in three of its four years in the Alberton league, finishing runner-up to rivals Yarram in 2007.

Yarram was one of the clubs which had long campaigned for Wonthaggi's removal from the league.

It controversially forfeited its football and netball matches against the Power in May last year in protest at the impasse.

Poor form by korumburra u/18 ringing our 3 best players and trying to get them to play up there. They have 47 u/18s on the list and still try to poach our best players. Anyone else think this is bad form??

I can see things from both sides but that just how footy is, you get the best team you can on the park. I find with juniors they like to play were there mates are and if your 3 best & fairest players are fairly good mates with the Korru boys they may look at going. There are no surprises in senior footy if you got the money you have the bargining power to find good players. I guess you just got to hope that loyality wins over.

Good luck

We have been dealing with this very scenario for years, at Darnum, Leo.

What has been pretty good for us to help stem the tide was the advent of our own under 18s from the under 17 format. However it still happens to an extent.

Poor form? Very. What to do about it? If I had the answer we wouldnt have lost players in the past. Mercs is right. Mates play a big part. We even have a great clubman who does all the digging and whatnot around the club. His son left for Drouin because his mates all played there. He was devastated, but he wasnt going to play anywhere if he couldnt play for Drouin. So in the best interests of the kid, the club spoke to him several times but ultimately cleared him so he could play footy.

Most of the kids we lost over the years though, were as a result of being courted.

If you get the answer to this, let me know.

If Korumburra have plenty on players for there u18's who misses out on a game of football if they do poach kids from other clubs.

Will it be the son of a commiteeman, timekeeper, trainer, canteen worker, raffle ticket seller etc, etc,

They run the risk of losing loyal followers of their club by bringing outsiders into the club.

Most supporters would like to see their local kids who they know play footy for their club whether they win lose or draw.

For the short term success may cost the club in the long term
I suppose time will tell.

Yeh might be a common thing at Kurra cause at Invy training today a young Kurra player is looking at coming across to us because Kurra said he will stuggle for a game. I will have to get hold of his name but he super hard at it and with a bit of work with his skills I think he will be a success. But the bottom line is if they are local or not and are not going to be in the best 22 they will be flicked away.

If a kid wants to play with there mates then thats a different story, to ring up u/18 kids when they have lots of players is just wrong in my opinion.

I totally agree with panthercat, i am sure the parents of the kids 20-30 on the list would not be too happy with it at all.

Many VCFL leagues have a points system instead of a salary cap. This is designed to prevent clubs from blowing their finances on imports in an all out effort to win a flag. Junior and under age players could be included in this ( somehow) if poaching from within your league and neighbouring leagues is a problem.
It also encourages clubs to develop their juniors and it does keep club finances in better order.

Hey fellas, did a young bloke by the name of Reece Jamieson play in this league, possibly with Phillip Island? I reckon he may have been a backman maybe about 18-19 years old now if that helps. Cheers

Just to give you guys a bit of Alberton League update from practice matches on the weekend.

Inverloch 12 4 76 defeated Ringwood 6 10 46

Inverloch were in control of the game most of the day and really should of won by more. The boys were very strong at the ball and the fitness from all the training that new coach Matty is really showing dividends. The ressies won by 8 points in a 16 on 16 match.
For my knowledge Ringwood play in Division 2 and finished mid road last year in there league.

The only other result I heard was Woodside beat Foster by 5 goals and I have not heard from the Tarwin Vs Lang Lang match which was played on friday night. Dalyston also played a Melbourne side on Saturday at Dalyston so have not heard from that match either any feedback would be great

The VCFL's "South Gippsland Review 2008-2009" has been released with their recommendations for the 2010 season. The main points are:
  • Wonthaggi to the WGLFL
  • Phillip Island to the MPNFL (Casey Cardinia)
  • AFL to become a 12 team comp
  • EDFL to remain as is
  • WGLFL to change it's name
  • Korumburra-Bena to remain in the AFL (may be subject to review in the future)
Looks like the rumours in the Sentinel Times a little while back were off the mark.
