News Alberton Oval Redevelopment

This article is from the 10th March. As I have written a couple of times, the 25m light towers being replaced with 50m light towers is/was going to cause an issue and the club agreed to go thru a consolidation process, even though the council basically rubber stamped it, and there was almost no mention of it by protesters, when they were trying to stop the Big Shed being approved. they have been adjusted to 39m.

WITH the current redevelopment of Alberton Oval underway, Port Adelaide Football Club provides an update on the application to upgrade the sports lighting.

To support our football programs, the club needed to provide elite training and match day facilities for our AFL, AFLW, SANFL teams and Academy programs, and this includes an upgrade to the sports lighting at Alberton Oval.

The existing lights are over twenty-five years old and use significantly dated technology. The proposed lighting will boast state-of-the-art LED technology, that will not only improve lighting for the oval itself but importantly will reduce light spillage beyond the oval footprint, ensuring the impact on neighbouring properties will be reduced when used for training purposes.

Following feedback, Port Adelaide revised the original design submitted to the City of Port Adelaide Enfield Council’s Assessment Panel (CAP) prior to Christmas and have since reduced the height of the towers to 39 metres, while still maintaining the advanced lighting technology to minimise lighting spillage outside the oval footprint.

This revised design, which is compliant with all planning rules and regulations, has been approved by Council, and Port Adelaide is now progressing with the construction.

The AFL, AFLW and SANFL teams will utilise the new light towers for evening training sessions (between April – October). These sessions will be limited to approximately three nights per week, and rarely will the lights be on past 8pm.

The new sports lighting will also provide the opportunity to schedule a small number of AFLW and SANFL night games at Alberton Oval. (which was never really discussed in the application lodged with the council and I posted back on page 50 and in particular post #1,237, but was always the club's plan)

If night home games are included as part of our AFLW or SANFL fixtures, Port Adelaide will communicate directly with the community well in advance of these games. In addition, we have developed a series of protocols to minimise impact, such as lighting levels and times of operation.

Work will commence on the installation of new the light towers in the week commencing Monday 13 March. This will include the preparation of the tower foundations which requires piling at four locations around the oval.

The piling of the four posts at each location will take approximately twelve days per tower site (four total), and approximately three of those days the machinery used for this part of the construction will create noise and possible vibrations. The piling machine will be transported to site via a float. To safely move the machinery on site, the council has approved a series of temporary road closures which will be in place between the hours of approximately 10am – 12pm (two hours) on specific dates across the course of the build.

Was at Alberton for the game today and see they have installed one of the new multi lamp light towers with one out the back of the Williams stand ready for install. These things are massive and should make night games at Alberton for the AFLW or Gather Round a must!

I've written about the lights in this thread a few times. I said people will get a shock when they see 50m light towers (old ones are 25m) and the council and Port got that one past the residents very easily, the council is making a $220k contribution, mainly due to increased electrical infrastructure needed (see post #1,235)
but the council with Port's agreement did put it to an assessment panel - no residents could object. The assessment panel came back saying they should be reduced to 38m.

I went to Alberton 2 weeks ago to pick up my club 1870 top and one tower was lying down but it was clear how bloody big it was and I thought the Seventh Avenue residents and others are going to be shocked. This isn't a great shot but the tower lying down goes from between the point and goal post to past the existing light tower.

The light tower head bends in towards the oval maybe 15 degrees, which should reduce light spillage.

The concrete slabs have been laid but there is still a lot of work to do. Oval is nearly back to its best before it was aerated and sand laid as per my previous pictures a few months ago.

Might be a bit squeezey when both the men's and women's team have to fit into the Williams stand. The original plan was that the players locker area would be finished in July for the men to move back to the eastern side and the whole redevelopment by mid to late September. The contaminated soil pushed that all back 6 to 8 weeks.

Worked at a steel factory during uni days

It would be amazing to play our Gather Round match at Alberton Oval next year.
While i doubt we ever would be able to play one of our games there, maybe it could replace a Norwood oval game?

We should be able to play our preseason games there though, surely.

Someone should show people at Norwood the light towers going behind where people stand so you can actually see the football from the pockets!!

As they say never say never. But the precinct around The Parade had a fantastic vibe during Gather Round and IMO Alberton couldn't compete with that.

Until the redevelopment began we would always have been able to as far as I know. But even when finished I imagine it will be as it has been for a while now i.e. one interstate and one in the regions.

Yeah I'd go pre-season, not gather round, would be even harder to get a ticket for the gather round game.

Good to see the Big Shed frame is fully up and plenty of GFG mates rates steel being used there, and in the refurb of the Alan Scott building, now that they have started to rebuild the gutted sections of it.

The light towers are huge as well… I wonder what the neighbours will think when they are fired up?!
😂

They were supposed to be 50m tall, and got it thru with no complaints because the council couldn't block it via community protests, but we agreed to the council assessment panel phase, even though it was all pre approved, and the panel said it should be reduced to 38m and the club accepted it. i wonder if that was always the plan, say they will be 50m but knowing 38m ones will do the job and the club could say we have taken the communities concerns into account and reduced their height.

We pushed it as a training resource and for a couple of AFLW games that would be broadcast on TV, but the long run goal is for SANFL games and maybe 4 or 5 AFLW games if the minor round season expands to 17 games. There will be some outrage the first few times they are fully used for a few hours and then the first few AFLW games there.

Footy Parks were 50, but they had stands to get over so does seem excessive, unless it’s a visual thing for players.

Norwood have applied to upgrade their light towers. Will be interesting to see how high they go.

I suspect 2023 HD TV Lux requirements are a decent level higher than 1984 TV requirements when Footy Park lights were finally finished, but lighting technology eg LED lights, is a lot better.
