Like to throw the occasional curve ball LOL

Is he actually any good or just an Uber tall? Looks like some major weights will be needed.
Was projected as a first round prospect in his draft year until he chose basketball, so yeah you’d think he’s got the talent in addition to the size.

barely needing to jump 6 inches off the deck to put it in?
Now now, let's be fair... He has a standing reach of 10 feet, so he can touch the rim flat footed, plus he wears a size 20 shoe, so on his tiptoes, he's gaining another foot, so he doesn't even need to jump a single inch to dunk the ball.

That's essentially congratulating me for getting something off the top shelf of my pantry.

Named to preseason All-SEC 3rd team, which is a recognition of how well he’s going and at the same time a nod to how hard it is to put yourself in calculations for an NBA career.

His first Gators game of the new season is Nov 4th, and to paraphrase Alex, he’s keen to get in there if coach needs a “big” or if someone’s in foul trouble.

Third team? What does that mean? Is that good?

He'll have to settle for All Australian blazers

Just for those who don't know the USA basketball college system.

SEC is one of 32 college basketball conferences.

He's been named in the 3rd team for one of the 32 conferences.

Eg. He's a ****ing good basketballer, but still miles off being in draft contention.

Third team? What does that mean? Is that good?

Yes it’s good, it is some recognition… I guess think of it as being named to the All-Australian squad but not making the final team. And it’s just for the SEC conference of colleges, rather than the entire pool in the US and internationally who will eventually make up the draft cohort.

It's good, but a mile off NBA consideration. Third team is like if there were 3 All Australian teams, and he was in the third best one
Most of these are made up of seniors who are 3 years older than him. He's actually tracking much better than expected (unfortunately for us). Was expected to barely play in his freshman year and was a key contributor and will most likely start this year.

Generally, but for those who want to make it to the NBA it generally seems to be important to be making these teams young.

For example, the college bigs drafted in 2024 (Clingan, Edey, Ware, Post, Bona, Ighodaro, Missi) are usually making 2nd teams and above, often alongside defensive teams. Especially those speculative 2nd round picks, where teams often look for athletic rim protection as a base profile.

The key question is - do players ever get drafted into the NBA if they were in a thirds team for one of the 32 conferences at Alex's age? Or not.

It's not like that at all, because each team is only 5 guys. So 3rd team All-SEC means they predict he'll be amongst the Top 15 players in the conference, and 7 footers don't grow on trees, so he's one of the top big men in the conference. It's a pretty big honor for a guy in his second college season.

If he were to improve on that, he might start getting some draft chatter.

That's incredibly deceptive, because a lot of conferences are essentially complete trash.

The SEC is ranked third. Their 3rd team is better than the first team of most conferences.

There's only 8 decent conferences and the rest are basically irrelevant.

The size of the team doesn't change the comparison, given that is simply a matter of different sports. It was a layman's comparison.

It is also the preseason team. Here is last season's preseason vs actual first and second teams. A fair bit of variation beyond a handful of players. It is mostly meaningless guesswork.

He’s playing the 5. NBA teams are heavily prioritising bigs than can stretch and space with a reliable shot from deep. He’s gone at just under 30% from 3(which is ok if it improves) but it’s on extremely low usage. His fg% for a big is nothing special, guessing he misses plenty around the rim. He’s also older than most draftees which usually means a slide. Without knowing his defensive capabilities or athleticism, iq etc he sounds if anything, extremely late second round, or undrafted. He’d be fighting for a 2 way, against more talented players.

See how he goes this season, if fg% goes up, and he takes and makes more 3’s he has an outside chance of being drafted

I think this is a pretty balanced and accurate take.

It means that at the moment whoever has done the teams ranks him 5th or 6th in his conference for the 4/5 roles that he plays.

The two rounds of a draft might get up to about 15 draftees for those roles taken from all over the world and not just college basketball.

If the rankings are accurate, he's still miles off being draft relevant, unless his conference is an extreme anomaly for his roles.
