The Gu and De Boer just ran up and down all day. Lyon was so lucky to have two such hugely talented and disciplined runners actually capable of pulling off his stupid game plan.

More like Mzungu and deBoer were lucky to play for a fantastic coach that made our club relevant and got every ounce of talent from players regardless of draft position.

I have to post the analysis below. Bit of a brag really, I just got this emailed from one of my boys. It's definitely BF worthy and spot on apart from the cheeky bottom line:

I've just got around to watching the game and here are my thoughts so far

Players

- Treacy - incredible break-out year, loving his work up the ground to provide an option and great attacking field kicking along with pressure and a cool head in close

- Amiss - awesome pressure from him which is usually not a feature, would've had his first 5 goal-haul if he was less selfless but loved his impact and good for his confidence having a straight-kicking day

- Fyfe - great impact and bounced back nicely, midfield so dominant as a whole

- O'Meara - very valuable over past 3-4 weeks, seems as though he understands his role now

- Sturt - did some nice things apart from a horrible turnover in the back half, should give him a few games over Emmett who needs to find form at WAFL level

- Jackson - great confident performance in the forward line and he's got so much growth down there, I have no doubt the Darcy/Jackson combination can work

- Switkowski - unbelievable, should keep him playing higher up the ground from here on out

Overall

- everything went right against the worst team performance we've seen in 2024

- don't know what to take from this game, our forward line finally clicked and we were all over them in every facet - BUT Melbourne were horrible and offered zero pressure so we could do what we wanted

- bye couldn't come at a worse time after our best performance in ten years

- a bit concerned that we are generally low-scoring while playing kick-to-kick style in our back half all year, now that we've kicked 22 goals in a game with that style (Ryan 18 marks, Clark 15), we will continue doing it where I don't think it will win us big games

Injury list looking very good at the moment, only Cox to come back in 2-3 weeks but Draper has played very maturely as his replacement.

Love you and hope your bald head is still enjoying your long coastal walks,

J

Can say the same with Pearce. You’d rather he doesn’t have the ball, particularly as a kicker coming out from half back.
Dawson destroyed Roughead on his day, and kept more bigger guys honest. He was crucial in defence.
Pearce is nowhere near as bad. Actually provides drive and run on occasion, breaks tackles. Dawson could barely execute a drop punt.

Great write up, sounds like you need to borrow one of Hugh Davies hats !!

More of a personal limitation rather than skill. He actually could kick pretty well. Pearce is forced to do the tackle breaking stuff as it’s only him and Ryan as the key defenders.
Dawson had McPharlin, Johnson and Duffield mopping up

Dawson was such a liability with the ball it really hobbled the backline in providing any drive.
Like all good men he knew his limitations. He would almost always hand it off to a Duffield/Spurr or he'd just go long down the line. I don't recall too many turnovers kicking across the face of goal. It wasn't his job to provide "drive" anyway.

Ibbotson imo was the far greater cause of killing drive from defence because he'd get the ball and then his brain would shut down.

De Boer had a pretty decent run at GWS let’s be fair. He was generally an all round professional and would have done well under any coach. There’s a reason the AFL appointed him as a new commissioner not long after retirement, he didn’t need Ross to get the best out of him

I know matt de Boer had his critics on here .
But matt was a true professional on and off the field .
I would go as far as to say on footy talent he was good enough to be best 22 on any list in Australia , Just a good honest footballer and a champion person.

I’m all for grafting / cloning players

Very late to the party, but what a party this game was! Honestly, wtf happened?!

Sturt was pretty handy and although he can be inconsistent and frustrating, please keep picking him over Emmett!

Walters and Switta killed it and I'm not surprised, just extremely pleased to see it. Especially Switta, that was bloody brilliant!

Hopefully no changes for our game against the dogs.

Also, result aside, I really wouldn't mind playing at Alice every year. I love us packing out Optus stadium, but I kinda love the vibe of those community level games and something about Traeger Park and the excited faces in the crowd gets me
As long as it’s a dees home game, all for it to become an annual event.

Not for me. It takes away a potential game at the MCG and we should be fighting tooth and nail to keep as many as possible.

De Boer was a fantastic runner, great at finding the ball but a below average kick. Most of all he was disciplined and a natural leader. Every team would have him.

Agree and I loved the vibe as well
Watching the indigenous community go nuts on Sonny was awesome
Had a feeling he would stand up in that one

I hope they play there again

Reckon I might plan some time off and a caravan road trip to the red centre
