on afl.com.au Matthew Lloyd et al discussed what a rabble Melbourne were and expressed there may be internal issues. They showed May and another player having a go at each other following the Amiss ‘mark’. I noticed our players go straight to Walker to congratulate him and to see if he was ok after copping a blow to the ribs. He got going straight away. When May got a blow to the ribs he looked like he was in serious pain and it was like nobody cared. Our boys are playing for each other and back each other, even when we sometimes don’t .
Must have been that nasty travel they experienced 😂😂😂

Terrific footballer but I doubt anyone shows much concern for May. Would probably punch you in the face for having the temerity to ask him if he’s OK.

TBF the "having a go at each other" looked more like weary exasperation to me. Nothing was said, they just looked at each other.

But one of the things that was highlighted when we were surprising the footy world in '22, was the connection and closeness of the team. It wasn't long after this was being shown in the media that Collingwood started going with their lovefest narrative.

Surely this game further reinforces why we need a back up ruck and not Jackson as the main ruck.
With Jackson back in the forward line he is kicking goals.
Most importantly is the difference for Amiss and Treacy.
Amiss is no longer being beaten up because Treacy BLOCKS. Which he can do because he is not off rucking.
Treacy is also delivering ridiculous passes and goal assists.

Thought Sturt did pretty well on his second start of the year.
Apart from a couple of exceptions he linked up really well and competed hard.
Has that touch of class with the ball in his hands that makes him much more dangerous than Emmett in possession.
Hope he gets a decent run at it now for a few games in a row

There were a few times in possession where I thought “Emmett would have overcooked that”

If we could merge the two, the bull and pressure with the silk and finishing..

So the media is surprised at this 'new Freo'.

We've threatened to do this to several teams but have been really inaccurate. This win has been coming for some time and it won't be the last time this year we win by a huge score.

I legit don't think Emmett could have hit Treacy in the goal square for that 2nd goal...

One thing I saw in one of the replays was that the 50m penalty that Sturt got for his goal was a correct decision. When Sturt was on the ground after he took the mark in front, Rivers just dropped his body weight, with his elbows out, onto him with a slightly delayed fall.

One of the things I like about our gameplan is that it's simple. No requirement to push the zone up the ground searching for turnovers or have guys push ahead of the contest hoping we win it. It's a simple build from the back and or switch, or go quick through the middle one kick then by hand when a gap presents itself, but always roll back when losing possession in the back 2/3's. Score from contest at the core, with pressure scores the cherry.

The simplicity makes it more stable long term, whereas teams with new variants of the presussure game are always liable to see their method countered inside a season and a half. The group can take this method forward for years with only minimal tinkering.

(Flip side is it can be countered if the opposition puts in work and their midfield gets on top: West Coast really unpicked us. That lack of a forward big enough to split contests with your top full back interceptors with the ball coming in under pressure, and lack of contest winning smalls* for the spills, is a real problem for us).

*BTW I think this is why Emmett will persisted with for a while. His pressure is not the only thing he brings. His contested strength ball in hand is midfield bull level and he contests for ground balls well. If he can polish his pressure skills and continue to improve his tank he's going to be a good player.

Yeah I agree. He wasn't in the contest really put chose to trail in and put him down.

We actually did.
I was watching the replay, and the amount of times I saw our half backs on the attacking 50 really surprised me

I meant in general. I'm not sure that game is a create example with the Dees midfield deciding to just give up because it was all too hard.
I mean not only did Clark kick a goal but he did it from a handball receive inside 50 in open play. I don't think we've going to see that sort of thing happen very often!

At the time I thought it was fairly harsh, but what did Rivers in was the fact Sturt completed the mark before he got there and Rivers didn't even make a spoiling motion once he cannoned into him.
Technically it ticked all the boxes, it would just usually be overlooked because there wasn't any disadvantage from a "playing on" POV.

If he did also try and make him 'earn it' by dropping an elbow in that would have made it easy for umpire.

The Dawson/McPharlin/Johnson/Duffield/Spurr/Sutcliffe/Mzungu comes close for mine. I would still take McPharlin and Johnson (although Chapman has the potential to go well past) and whilst I would take Pearce on this year's heroics, Dawson was a great shutdown defender. Ryan shades Duffield defensively but a case could be put up that Duffield shades Ryan offensively. Aish over Sutcliffe and Clark will finish better than Mzungu because of his kicking although Mzungu at his best was pretty good both ways.
Dawson was such a liability with the ball it really hobbled the backline in providing any drive.

The Gu wasn't really a defender as such was he? I mean I know he played half back a bit but I think he probably spent more time playing thin side wing or HHF.

Often my memory of where Ross had people playing at his Freo height isn't clear since he had about 8 people up blocking for Fyfe and Mundy at every stoppage: AFL tables sort of supports my idea though. I note he kicked over half a goal a game most seasons for Freo and had more I50's than R50s

Can say the same with Pearce. You’d rather he doesn’t have the ball, particularly as a kicker coming out from half back.
Dawson destroyed Roughead on his day, and kept more bigger guys honest. He was crucial in defence.
