Hanley and Hibberd dead stiff.

I'm torn on Hanley

Ultimately the reason he has had a break-out season is due to playing midfield.

As a midfielder, I wouldn't select him higher than those already chosen.

He would make the "half-back" position - but ultimately he really hasn't spent much time there this year.

Steve Johnson the same - straight up midfielder now

Kennedy & Cameron fell off at the end of season whereas Cloke kept on going.

Contested marks. Cloke 55 (1st by 7 league wide), Kennedy 34, Cameron 20.
Marks inside 50. Cloke 97 (1st by 25 league wide), Kennedy 62, Cameron 47.
Marks. Cloke 183 (2nd league wide), Kennedy 143, Cameron 106.
Goals. Cloke 66 (highest average of any player), Kennedy 60, Cameron 62 (1 more game).

Cloke & Roughead are neck to neck than a fair gap to the next KPF.

Very true - but they look at more than raw numbers.

I'd hazard a guess Cloke was an i50 target more than say Kennedy.

In addition, if you take in direct goal assists, that leaves Kennedy ahead of Cloke. Add in the significantly stronger 2-way running Kennedy adds - it would be hard to choose Cloke IMO

I do agree - Kennedy fell away over the last 4 weeks - but it is calculated over 23 rounds, not just your four worst.

Either would be worthy

I didn't expect any of our players to make the final team but for none to make the squad really just proves how flawed AA selections can be.

Morris, Rance and even Riewoldt IMO should have made the 40 man squad.

Freo had the clear best defence and only Johnson made the squad, and that's pretty fair because Freo's defence was built around a team effort.
Mcpharlin only missed because ultimately he didn't play enough games, and you guys had players in the squad to reflect the quality team output (Mayne's inclusion would largely be due to his immense contribution to that team defense). Richmond defenders got no recognition at all, and I would be the first to admit that our midfielders don't work hard enough both ways and leave a lot of work to be done by the defensive group. Our great defensive record is due to the high quality of our best defenders and I really think at least one of them deserved to be recognized. Really I'm just staggered that Rance missed out altogether.

Lets be honest, the AA selection is more confusing than the MRP. I know I'm Freo but Crowley beat EVERY midfielder named in the squad, except Hannebury. Credit were its due, he might not get a final 22 spot but deserves to be in this squad.

I'm not sure being named in the squad is much to hang your hat on if you don't end up making the team. Crowley won't get in for the same reason lockdown small defenders (Morris/Spurr/Smith etc) won't get in, they don't seem to like rewarding negative players.

Presti made the squad a few years ago, but his type is generally frowned upon.

people justifying a player over another based on stats

the people who picked the squad should be replaced by some people on here.

the real experts

Just going to comment on Hawthorn inclusions (for the most part):

Roughead - Not too much to add. Brilliant all season. Is a lock.

Mitchell - Moved to half back flank this year and has still managed to average about 28 touches a game. Quick hands and cool head has helped immensely in a Minor Premiership winning team. Deserves to be in the final 22, but not a lock.

Hodge - Might not be his best season, but he has still been pretty bloody good throughout. Consistency the only issue, few off games, but his best has been brilliant. Particularly after most people had written him off at the start of the season. As Echols has mentioned, just finished outside the top 10 in the AFLCA award. Wouldn't look out of place on a bench spot.

Gibson - Solid all season. Worthy of top 40 but can't see him in the 22.

Franklin - If AA was selected by comparing players to their previous years then Franklin probably wouldn't be in the top 40. But hey, that's not how AA selection works. He's still had a pretty solid year and if he played the full 22 games could well have won a third Coleman. To be honest, I didn't expect him to be in the squad, but don't think it's a bad selection. Like Gibbo, can't see him making the final 22.

I don't understand why people are whinging about someone like JR not getting in. Neither him or Buddy would make the 22 so who cares? You don't get anything for making top 40! Sure, it's nice to get some recognition, but to those who miss out on the 22 every year I don't think it's much consolation.

Hodge ? I can understand that noone likes to see taggers get a gig...but they usually at least take the absolute cream of the crop as opponents every week. I'm not really sure how a guy gets in that has hardly even had an opponent all season, plays the easiest role on the field, and didnt even have more than a "good" season in that role. Not even the Hawthorn fans predicted he could even make the squad o_O Ahhh well...Mackie/JPK/Hodge just a few borderlines that may have been swept up in a quota net this yr.

Exactly the same from each top 4 club probably says everything we need to know. Odds are against that ever happening on actual merit, but they've managed to do it. Some are playing well as TEAMS and others have had more individuals doing well...always the case...5 each sounds very "safe" and "calculated" doesnt it.

Solid squad tho and look fwd to seeing the 22. None of us will ever be totally happy or agree with everything but at least they've got the makings of a solid 22.

If ricciuto is an AA judge, then he'll try his absolute best to ensure Dangerfield & Douglas make the final 22 at Boak & Wingard's expense.

Boak >> Dangerfield & Douglas.
Danger deserves a spot on the 22. Douglas won't make it but great to see him in the 40.

Contested marks. Cloke 55 (1st by 7 league wide), Kennedy 34, Cameron 20.

Marks. Cloke 183 (2nd league wide), Kennedy 143, Cameron 106.

Cloke, Cameron and Kennedy have been about equal this season IMO. But I would have Roughead a notch above those three. I think next season's Coleman race will be one of the closest yet with so many quality key forwards; Roughead, Kennedy, Cloke, Cameron, J.Riewoldt, Franklin, N.Riewoldt, Hawkins, Walker, Darling, Tippett, Schulz, Pavlich if he can manage a full season. Really exciting.

I may be a tad biased but I think you are underselling Nick Riewoldt's season, he's been fantastic consistently throughout the season. There has been much talk about how Cameron should get in seeing how well he has performed in such a poor side, then I think Nick should to some degree get that consideration too. In terms of team stats relevant to forwards St Kilda sit third last ahead of Melbourne and GWS in both inside 50's and goals per game (interestingly St Kilda only average 1.4 more goals/ game than GWS.
Individually he is worthy too
Contested marks. Cloke 55 (1st by 7 league wide),Riewoldt 37, Kennedy 34, Cameron 20.
Marks inside 50. Cloke 97, Riewoldt 72, Kennedy 62, Cameron 47.
Marks. Cloke 183, Riewoldt 202(1st by 19 league wide) Kennedy 143, Cameron 106.
Goals. Cloke 66, Riewoldt 50, Kennedy 60, Cameron 62 (1 more game).
Tackles. Cloke 27, Riewoldt 41, Kennedy 69, Cameron 27

I think Cloke should be FF, Riewoldt CHF and Kennedy bench with Roughead FP

Those stats are meaningless. How about the rest of the minutes in the selected games, and how about all games.

And surprise, surprise, you failed to include Round 9 VS Essendon, when he conceded 3 goals.

Mate don't call Santa smart that's just embarrassing. Rance is still our number 1 defender taking the best forward each week, and he is nearly leading the comp in intercept marks, he has been great. Wuld have thought having the 3rd best defence in the league entitled us to a defender or two being included in the AA squad.

Chaplin has been a canny acquisition.

Has been able to take the taller, more powerful players which has helped Rance's performance.

I rate Chaplin's season a touch better than Rance's season.

Why do I50 marks matter at all?
You can kick 50 goals from 0 inside 50 marks.
You can also kick goals from outside 50.
You've just chosen the stats that make Riewoldt's year look better than Franklins.

In reality neither of them deserved to make it over Roughead/Kennedy/Cameron.
Theres your 3 talls, add Thomas, Wingard and a leftover midfielder and you've got your forward 6 for the 22.

I would go Roughead, Cloke and N.Riewoldt.

It's helps the team have a tall mobile target who can get the ball outside 50, but at the same time leave space for the other forwards.
