Very quick go at a squad of 40:

Adelaide (3): Rory Sloane, Eddie Betts, Rory Laird
Brisbane (1): Dayne Zorko
Carlton (1): Patrick Cripps
Collingwood (1): Scott Pendlebury
Essendon (1): David Zaharakis
Fremantle (0): Nil
Geelong (2): Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood
Gold Coast (3): Aaron Hall, Gary Ablett, Tom Lynch
GWS (5): Phil Davis, Dylan Shiel, Callan Ward, Tom Scully, Heath Shaw
Hawthorn (3): Josh Gibson, Sam Mitchell, Ben Stratton
Melbourne (2): Jack Viney, Max Gawn
North Melbourne (3): Jack Ziebell, Todd Goldstein, Jarrad Waite
Port Adelaide (1): Jasper Pittard
Richmond (0): Nil
St Kilda (2): Nick Riewoldt, Leigh Montagna
Sydney (6): Dan Hannebery, Tom Mitchell, Josh Kennedy, Lance Franklin, Luke Parker, Heath Grundy
West Coast (3): Nic Naitanui, Luke Shuey, Jeremy McGovern
Western Bulldogs (3): Luke Dahlhaus, Dale Morris, Lachie Hunter

Could probably go up to 60 odd players that would be deserving so there are obviously quite a few unlucky to miss. May be some oversights.

I think from Geelong Guthrie on half back and Motlop half forward would probably be starting on the ground never mind the squad

I've always found the Hawthorn player ratings really strange. Rioli is good but 6th best player in the comp? Puopolo has had a great game and a couple of good ones but surely not top 2 at Hawthorn? Also, Sam Mitchell is the number 1 ball winner in the comp (last season and this season until rested), a brilliant user and easily the best player at Hawthorn (carried us a few times this year) and I've never seen him in the top 40.
Mitchell is currently 26th overall - third at Hawthorn behind Rioli and Roughead, though Roughead starts to drop this week. He has been as high as ninth overall and is 33rd on average per game this season, second at Hawthorn (having missed one game). Puopolo is 51st.

Guthrie was an oversight - should be in the squad. Happy with my call on Motlop though; started the year relatively slowly and with a rolling squad at this early stage two or three ordinary games are enough to see you miss out. Definitely building though.

Any chance we could have the average rating per game for this year only? Players like Gibson, Mitchell etc., who have missed one game won't make the overall list but might be up there based on a per game basis.

Thanks - that makes more sense. Not sure on the table I quoted then. Still strange that Roughy is so high as his form was not that great last year (his worst in ages) and obviously injured all this year. 26th/33rd still seems low for Mitchell but explains why I never see him on the AFL website or on here as they usually just do the top 10/20.

Why do you think he is not rated higher? Too many short kicks? Doesn't apply enough pressure the other way? cos he does get a lot of the ball, uses it very well and has a lot of score involvements (which to me would suggest damaging)

No, that's this list:

Good call, there are others in front of Motlop at the moment, saying he should be starting on the ground is a very biased.

From the Swans I would get rid of Mitchell. Has dropped off a bit since his first two weeks. Swap him with Rampe and you have the best 6 players for us this year.

No idea on who would be the AA defenders this year. Very even start to the year.

Rampe's another one that probably should've been in on reflection. Bloody hell this is hard haha.

And West Coast too.

Yeah, sheesh. You'd want at least one or two in there preferably. I'm sure some WC guys will get going. Gaff will fix his disposal and Priddis making some strange errors. I think WC are a massive chance, early season form can be very deceiving.

That list is just an indicator of individual player improvements, but the point I was making with North is that there's perhaps more to North's good position than just a decent early draw. A team genuinely improves on the back of some lower profile guys getting significantly better. Adelaide are also evidence of this.

Decent list. I'd say Frawley is pretty close to the 22 though, so should be in the 40. Other than that, it's a pretty solid list.

Robbie Tarrant has been massive for us this year.

I haven't the foggiest who you'd drop though.

Morris or Grundy. Maybe.

Didn't work for Nathan Jones when he carried Melbourne's midfield and had those rankings. Didn't even make the 40. Maybe Cripps will get more favourable treatment.
How about when you're also ranked 12th for tackles and 6th for handballs in the comp?

All of this whilst he's been heavily tagged and could actually play better

Not biased at all.
Name me another half forward kicking as many goals and racking up efficient disposals

Tom Lynch 19.5 and 17 goals
Steve Johnson 21 and 18 goals
Bruest 15 and 17 goals
Motlop 22 and 13 goals

He is in the mix and would be in the squad. Lynch and Johnson should be ahead of him. Normally they'd pick an on baller on the other flank so you would think only one genuine half forward spot would be up for grabs.

Motlop has much better efficiency and meters gained then the both of them. Also his pressure acts are better also.
We know how much the selectors love that. Cyril got selected pretty much with inferior stats in every other department but that alone.

Good list, I think Michael Walters would be in squad having stellar year.
