I tend to disagree with most of this. Respectfully of course.
I love AEW but it wasn't until Punk and Danielson were part of it that I purchased the Fite app to watch every week. Once I started watching regularly I also realised how FTR are the best tag team in the world and it isn't close IMO.
What drew me in at the beginning was the 'sugar hit' of watching Kenny, The Bucks, Sammy Guevara etc flying around having crazy matches. It felt so fresh compared to how stagnate WWE had become. But as time went on I realised there wasn't as much substance to that style and it only has so much longevity.
The style of wrestling you see from Punk, Danielson, Jericho, FTR etc is based on fundamental principles. It will last forever because it always has. If you lose somebody like Punk (who has been proven to move the needle) and focus on the Elite universe I worry AEW won't be a legitimate alternative in 5 years time.
In saying all of this, I absolutely love the buffet style offerings AEW provides. I'm firmly in the camp that believes Punk is THE guy to build it around. It's just unfortunate that it's looking likely that they all can't co-exist long term.
I agree with most of this. What Punk, Danielson, Jericho, FTR, bring is psychology, they are telling a story, which makes you more invested. What the Elite and some other talent like Swerve and Dante Martin do is entertaining in its own right, but it doesn’t elicit the same emotional response as the story tellers do, it’s one of the main reasons that I loved watching Bret Hart growing up, everything he did in his matches made sense.
I think things will get sorted, I can’t see it becoming HBK/Bret Hart levels where some one(s) have to leave.
