Have it on pretty good authority that Dale Thomas' contract extension will be completed in the next 14 to 21 days and he'll remain a Pie for the next three years (similar to Marc Murphy with us). Will be announced the week you play us, cheeky buggers!

Source: Best mate's Dad who has been a Collingwood member for 30+ years and knows pretty much everyone at the club (he's introduced me to a large number of them, first name basis so reliable).

Congrats to you all.

Well it's the Week we play you Guys and I have heard nothing?

So what is up?

Update of Daisy Contract Talks:
Similarly, the silence on Dale Thomas's contract had some believing he might be on the move.
The mid-season deadline he had set came and went, but he told the Herald Sun that was no cause for panic.
"It is all coming along nicely,'' he said.
"I said I would hope to have it done by mid-season, but it wasn't the case. There is no story in that.
"It has just taken a while to figure out the finer details and hopefully (it will be resolved) by finals, but I don't think I am going anywhere.''
The Pies will have more than half of their premiership team coming out of contract next year, but so far they haven't missed a beat when it comes to securing their flag-winning stars.
Once again great facilities, team success and the power of a quality culture wins the day at Westpac Centre.

Does not sound a 100% sure he will stay in that as there must be a Few Things that the 2 Can't Agree on yet.

Doubt he would leave but It is taking awhile to get his Done and what does that Mean for Dawsey New Contract and N Brown New Contract?

$7.5M over 5 years, with $2M front loaded in the first year can be hard to say no to.

What I'm about to post is all best estimate (including the above "offer") so some numbers could be slightly off.

So here we go, in 2012 their salary cap would look something like this Daisy $2 mill, Scully $1 mill, Ward $800,000, Clark $700,000, Palmer $500,000, and Walker $400,000 (the 5 after Daisy are basically as gone as you'll get). All up that's a combined figure of $5.4 million. Their entire salary cap for 2012 is $10 million (reducing by $200,000 each season for 5 seasons) which would mean 54% of the salary cap would go to those 6 players leaving just $4.6 million between the other 44.

From there they have to trade in the players for the picks in the mini-draft of U17's, we'll play it safe and say that there'll be three of those. At a minimum GWS will be after goodish players so they'll all probably end up on at least $300,000 per year. So we now have $6.5 million of the salary cap or 65% taken up by just 9 players.

Based on 2011 earnings the salary for a 1st round pick is $60,000 (of which they'll have 9) with a match payment of around $2,900. If they play every game that's a potential to earn roughly $125,000, however playing 11+ games would entitle them to bonuses tallying $8,100. We can then add other bonuses on top like goalkicking, B&F finishes, Rising star nominations and the like. With natural increases in the size of all three (bonuses, match payments and the base wage) for 2012 we'll say they'll earn around $150,000 each which is $1.35 million. This now leaves us with $7.85 million or 78.5% of the cap taken up before we've even fielded 22 players (18 to be precise).

There are still a further 32 players that need to be listed by GWS that need to share in $2.15 million in 2012. This leaves an average of just $67,200 for them to share amongst themselves. With match payments and injury payments to those players it would leave them probably close to $100,000 minimum over the salary cap by the end of 2012.

This is before we mention that they have a two year window to sign players and that with all their young guns on smaller length contracts (2 or 3 years compared to the big name players 4-5 year deals) they will have less than zero room to re-sign them once they need to be given bigger deals due to natural progression! I.e I can't see Dylan Shiel, Jonathon Patton, Stephen Coniglio and Chad Wingard hanging around after their initial contract is up if the most they can be paid is base wages.

I realise there is a very slight chance that the offer of $7.5 million over 5 years is true, however I believe it borders on scaremongering when you actually look at the figures!

To sum up do you really think they'd be able to offer Kruezer around $3 mill over 5 years, confirmed on Saturday by Allan, if they'd already made offers to all three of Scully, Ward and Thomas (all of which bar Daisy's we know to be true)? Especially considering Kruezer doesn't even come off contract until 2012.....

Agree on Scodogs quartet of signings.

In the Age today, GWS were asked if they had obtained agreement to play with them from any players and would it be around 3 or 4 players for uncontracted players at the end of 2011. The GWS rep replied "Your maths is pretty good" or words to that effect.

Scully, Walker (Adelaide), Rhys Palmer & Mitch Clark. Clarks' manager was apparently approached by Richmond and he indicated he was after $600/$700k per year. Only GWS can afford that.

Not so sure on Ward just yet.

The more players they sign, the better it is for us. I'm still sticking with initial thoughts prior to the Suns taking their players, in that we'll only lose bit part players/fringe 22 type players, if any at all.

My gut feeling is that he has come to terms with the Pies and they'll announce it all on the eve of the finals.
That is pure conjecture, but that's my guess.

Hmm, he is a definite to stay isn't he? This delayed signing is of some concern.

While I don't think Thomas will head to GWS, but if it does work out that both Thomas and Scully both head to GWS then wouldn't be surprised if scully is a little peeved off given how Thomas has pretty much sailed under the radar while in comparison Scully has taken all the heat.
Thomas isn't going anywhere, we know that, yet it's basically been confirmed that GWS has signed 4 players (well "signed" is the wrong word, more like come to an agreement) and Scully is the big name of those.

GWS won't give up on Thomas, but I think they believe they are better aiming at an uncontracted player from Collingwood next year, as they have tried this season and seemingly failed.

Thomas isn't going anywhere, don't worry, from what I've heard the deal is virtually sealed for him to stay at Collingwood, it's just a few little sticking points regarding his marketability that are remaining before he signs off on a 2 year extension.

After looking at how top heavy Gold Coast is and how that doesn't lead to good results wouldn't GWS be better off gettting a few more established average / good players than a handful of great players?

Get a dozen second / third tier and fringe players and build a team from that? Let the big name's come from the draft and be ready in 3 or 4 years just as your second / third tier are getting close to retirement.

From my view point the ones to hit would be Dick, Goldsack, Johnson. Fringe players that could walk into a team a get a game from day one enabling you to build the young guys around them. You would be able to get them pretty cheap and build a team from day one.

The rumour i have heard about the 4 that have come to an agreement with GWS are Scully, Carslile from Port,Walker from adelaide, and possibly Pearce from Port.

Chad Cornes will possibly also move,so it seems like a mass exodus from port but they will be compensated with picks.Good time for Port to clean out and start again.
Maybe Trengrove may move back to Vic as well

Wouldn't Port have to agree to let more than 1 player go to GWS? My understanding was that GWS could only take one uncontracted player from each club and if they wanted more from one club they would have to trade for them. Or are the rules different for GWS than they were for GC?

Was listening to SEN today with John Ralph and KB, KB asked Ralph if Thomas would play with the pies next year in which he replied "absolutely". Now, he didn't exactly say why or how but he must know something to sound so confident. Dunno if anyone else heard it? He said something along the lines of it just taking a little while longer to finalise the contract...nothing new i suppose, but good to hear something because i haven't heard much about it for a while..

Yup I heard it as well:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Seemed to shut up KB pretty quickly lol:D

GWS will have to trade for a 2nd uncontracted player. They'll do what the Suns did with Brennan though and offer a massive deal, and then the players goes to Port and says I'm going, now trade me.

Port being in rebuilding mode, will do a deal.

Apparrently Barrett said on TFS that Daisy has agreed to terms and Walsh told him the deal will be done and dusted very shortly.

Yeah it sounds like once Paul Conners comes back from overseas:confused: that Contract will be signed

No they won't. The second, third, fourth etc etc player still goes to GWS as an uncontracted player so Port would still receive a compensation pick from the AFL, put simply GWS don't trade for anyone out of contract.

The way it worked with Brennan was he was released to GC as Brisbane's second uncontracted player. Brisbane then received an end of first round pick as compensation. From there GC rewarded Brisbane for releasing Brennan by orchestrating a deal which Brisbane won as payment for releasing him, in the end the deal was.

Brennan compensation pick + pick 10 + pick 48 going from Brisbane to GC

for

Rohan Bewick + pick 27 + pick 25 + pick 5 going from GC to Brisbane

If you need proof the below website lists all the trades that occurred last year and the only time Brennan's name pops up is in regards to his compensation pick being the one GC got back rather than Rischitelli's.

I don't want to argue with you champ but you're wrong.

What you just explained was a trade, albeit classd as an agreement. In addition to the trade, the AFL made the 'rules as you go' and gave the Lions a compensation pick on top of the trade deal.

The trade was BL (Brennan & pick 10) for GCS (pick 5 & pick 25) or something similar. The AFL threw in the 3rd round compo pick? to help out Brisbane. Brennan was/is worth far more the a 3rd round pick.

I guarantee you, GWS can only sign 1 uncontracted player from each club. To get a 2nd player you have to do a trade/get agreement from other club. Brisbane agreed to release Brennan after he threatened them that he'd walk.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/new...-gold-coast-suns/story-e6frg7mf-1225935678533

The entry rules for the Suns permitted a second uncontracted player to join them from Brisbane provided the Lions were in agreement and they yesterday provided the AFL with written permission. The Lions, who last month lost best-and-fairest winner Michael Rischitelli to the Gold Coast, agreed to release Brennan for future salary-cap relief.

The Brennan deal was clinched, with involvement from Collingwood, which traded for Andrew Krakouer from the Suns, by a swapping of draft picks. The end result for the Lions is that they get several selections inside the top 30 and improve their first-round pecking order from pick 10 down to pick five.

The Lions agreed to release him. Without that agreement no movement happens. When agreeing to the release, the Suns coughed up some picks & the AFL dipped in too.

Fortunately the Lions were able to strike a deal with the Gold Coast that saw the Club secure a range of quality draft selections while also adding a promising youngster to our list.

The Club now holds two first round selections in next month’s AFL National Draft (Picks No.5 and No.25) as well as two early second round selections (Picks No.27 and No.31).

National Talent Manager Rob Kerr said the trade deal involving Jared Brennan was made in Club’s best interests.

Scott Emberly wouldn't , would he ?

3AW at 7am said that yesterday Pendles was seen in deep discussion with Gubby Allen from GWS in Elsternwick.
He wouldn't would he ?

Re: Scott Emberly wouldn't , would he ?

My thoughts are if he was going to go he wouldn't have signed this year. It just doesn't make any sense.

The only reason he or any other Collingwood player would leave is for the $$$. Someone like pendles who is going to be one of our best paid players and a huge chance of being captain would more than likely need that offer to be huge. I don't think GWS are going to be holding onto that sort of money for a year while there guy sticks around.

It would be a massive gamble for GWS to hold the sort of money that would be required to lure him in there cap if he was there one marquee signing. He signed this year so he clearly hasn't made up his mind to go.

I think they will go out and get everyone they can this year. Next year will more than likely be used for signing fringe players, or possibly guys who weren't out of contract this year, not someone who was out of contract and signed a one year deal.

As strange as the one year deal was I think it was largely to show intent whilst still holding on to see what slice of the pie the players get after the new agreement, in some ways still keeping the club in mind (ending speculation at least for this year) whilst protecting he's best interest.
