The Official Secrets Act was promulgated precisely by those who
Official Secrets Act et al say otherwise. There needs to be limits. Otherwise, no Jason Bourne.

The Official Secrets Act was promulgated by Parliament, the very institution that wants to shield government criminality from public scrutiny.

In a genuine democracy, all actions of government would be open to public scrutiny.

They aren't, because the actions of governments are corrupt, criminal and risk the welfare and lives of their own citizens.

It was really important for wikileaks to release the names of thousands of Afghans that worked with the Yanks. It's made the world a better place. Redaction is the devil.

well it seems that hamas chief ismail haniyeh has lost more of his family thanks to the israeli bombing...

was it fate or just a coincidence that yahoo news published a story about netinyahoo's son hiding in florida....

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son Yair tore into the military on Monday, citing the High Court of Justice’s interim order instructing the state comptroller to suspend any aspects of his probe into the failings relating to October 7 that deal with the Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet.

“What are they trying to hide? If there was no treason, why are they so afraid for external and independent parties to check what happened?” the premier’s son wrote on X.

(Sounds like an arrogant prick....and looks like one too.... the fallen apple and the tree)

I wrote earlier about a richard fidler conversation with ABC Global Affairs Editor, John Lyons, who lived in Jerusalem for a number of years. He provides primarily his own personal experiences during that time.

I think he has excellent objectivity on the middle east conflict and gives evidence to show that.

He also speaks about how israeli officials interface with Australian journalists.

Interesting sidelight in the US election cycle which might have an impact in Australia in the next few years.

House of Reps democrat Jamaal Bowman who had been in the position for 2 terms lost out in the primary to a largely unknown but was supported by jewish lobby money of $20m and hillary clinton. On the other side was AOC and bernie sanders. It seems that bowman made the mistake of going on an israel tour 3 years ago and actually saw the hopeless of the situation for palestinians. He changed his voting pattern and AIPAC decided to campaign against him.

THe inherent problem is not the massive campaign spending of jewish americans but the stupidity of the electorate. And the Democratic Party lose someone who was hoping to do good for ordinary people, and replace him with a puppet.

There is massive election spending in the US from every kind of lobby and interest group. Yet you go with lines like "massive campaign spending of jewish americans" - it's giving off a very ordinary smell.

If I could suggest a practical measure, maybe cease your use of the word "jewish" altogether? It might help you not make anti-semitic comments.

Sorry BW, but you and I are light years apart.
a) Governments have no right to keep secrets because their aim is not to "protect you and me". Rather, their aim is protect the profit interests of their corporate and financial backers. And the profit interests of corporations, hedge funds, banks etc are inimical to those of "you and me".
b) Throughout Asange's numerous court hearings, the prosecution has never been able to produce a shred of evidence that anything Assange published caused harm to US military personnel. Assange carefully curated all the information he released to ensure that this would be the case.
c) There is every justification for us to know what "our" governments do. It does not sound like you have a very strong attachment to democracy if you think otherwise.
You are right, we are light years apart.
Believing that governments exist to somehow operate as a shadow organisation, stripping you of your rights and privileges is just not what happens in reality.
The first thing to recognise is that there is, and has never been, “freedom of speech”.
And today’s news out of America shows exactly why there should always be government oversight of speech.
If you don’t know what happened, then look up “a Trump” in your internet search. And then come back and tell me why he should have unfettered freedom of speech.

Hmm…
Only one real response.

if you clicked on the link you would see the headline...

Jamaal Bowman is ousted in most expensive House primary ever

Regarding your suggestion about wording, I will take it on board Swipey, because of your long history in the area.

I am not defending Trump's right to free speech. I am defending the right of Julian Assange to free speech, of Chelsea Manning to free speech, of Bogdan Syrotiuk, a socialist in Ukraine who has been imprisoned by the Zelensky government because of his opposition to imperialist war, of US students to express their opposition to the genocide in Gaza ....

i think chelsea - or at least bradley - would have signed something that would have said something along the lines that he wouldnt release information that he was accessing on the gov't's servers...

now whether his status changed when he changed sex is another matter...

Great news that Julian Assange is now a free man. The US government has backed down because they knew full well that their "case" against Assange was a fraud from the beginning.
The White House made a calculated decision that a trumped-up political trial of a courageous journalist in the United States would expose the fraud that American imperialism is waging war around the world in the name of “democracy.”

Makes Manning all the more courageous for exposing their criminality. I think the Nazis used that argument at Nuremberg: " i was only following orders".

well there was a lot of information involved that wasnt criminal, such as the names of various operatives who were secretly working for the US.

Not that i disagree with the idea that there is just too much politically embarassing stuff getting classified as top secret.

the main reason Yair is hiding in Florida is to avoid military service in the IDF. He supports genocide, but he doesn't want to get his white kid gloves stained with blood in the process. And Daddy is happy to make sure he isnt compelled to return.

But your cool with the Afghans named by Wikileaks who were most likely, along with their families, tortured then executed?

"They're informants. If they get killed, they've got it coming. They deserve it."

Julian Assange

I'm surprised he didn't advocate for himself to receive the death penalty.
