All time World XI

I guess the top 3 bats would be Bradman, Lara and Tendulkar?. But geez that's a hard one so many great players down the ages.

Hmm, all time World XI

Sir Don Bradman(c)
Sir Jack Hobbs
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Sir Viv Richards
Sir Garry Sobers
Adam Gilchrist (w/k)
Imran Khan
Kapil Dev
Shane Warne
Dennis Lillee

Glenn McGrath (12th man)

Edit: Closely followed with AB, but whom to remove to put my favourite player in?
No room for Hadlee, Gavaskar (didn't really want to include him anyway), Clive Lloyd (one of my favourite captains of all time) or Steve Waugh (who didn't rate in the top 100 of all time for some unknown reason).

Hard to argue with that list....but i might take one of the Windie speed demons (Marshall my favorite, though Holding might also get a nod) over either Khan or Dev.

Argh, I didn't even think of them!
Yep, I'd take Whispering Death (Michael Holding) or Marshall over McGrath, and I reckon he'd pip Lillee for the XI.
There are too many fantastic players over the years to be able to knock it on the head. That's why I love test cricket so much!

Hmm, very modern. No respect for the Oldies? If you have Hobbs and Bradman, you probably should consider some of the other older players - just because they played very few tests compared with today.

My try

WG Grace (has to be)
Gavaskar, just from Headley
Greg Blewett... sorry, I mean Bradman (get those two mixed up all the time...)
Lara
Hammond/Pollock/Javed.......Javed, because every side needs an irritating prick
Sobers
Gilchrist
Barnes
Lillee
Warne
Ambrose

And Grace would be captain.

Well you've already got an irritating prick in Sunny... ;)
The Good Doctor is indeed an admirable choice.
I assume the Pollock you have is Graeme, and not Shaun?
S.F. Barnes is a fine choice as well. An average of something like 16 on the sticky wickets of the day is simply amazing.
Interesting choice in Ambrose though...

What about Big Bird?. The list is endless it's too hard to pick just 11. With so many greast you could have about 6 test quality teams who could beat any team of the modern era.

Now there's a Test championship I'd love to see!

I'll just go on players ive seen since around 94 or so

Kirstin
Hayden
Ponting
Tendaulker
Lara
S Waugh (c)
Gilchrist (wk)
Warne
Ambrose
Akram
Mcgrath

I'll have a crack:

1) Hobb
2) Sutcliffe (and that's it for England)
3) Bradman (no contest)
4) Ponting (surpised no-one's mentioned him. Seems to me to be absurdly under-rated. Ok, he's mainly played at 3, but if you can average near 60 at 3, 4 should not be a problem)
5) G Chappell, W Hammond, V Richards, N Harvey, D Compton, S Tendulkar, B Lara; you could toss a coin here. Today I'll say Chappell. Tomorrow it could easily be Richards.
6) Imran
7) Gilchrist
8) Marshall
9) Warne
10) Lillee
11) Murali (I know that's controversial - and as the ICC says he's legal I'm going to accept that for the sake of this hypothetical, but his record is phenomenal)

Bowlers win matches and I'll back this team to bowl out any opposition. Bradman at 3 gives you two batsmen for the price of one. Imran was an exceptionally talented "backs to the wall" batsman. I've kept Gilly at 7 for that is where he was most dangerous.

Marshall, Lillee and Imran were three outstanding paceman who between them would master all conditions. As the ball gets old, I salivate at the prospect of 30-40 overs unchanged from the two spinning maestros.

O'Reilly, Grimmett and Laker unlucky.

Hobbs
Gavasker
Bradman
Lara
Tendulkar
Sobers
Gilchrist
Warne
Marshall
Lillee
Muralitharan

That is the bowling attack I would select. The only thing that I'd consider is including an extra pace option. Sobers selects himself and was a decent quick but, given the strength of the batting line up, I'd look to include someone like Imran, replacing a middle order bat (with Sobers at #5), or another quick (Wasim or McGrath), replacing Murali.

Warne out Wilfred Rhodes in
Ultimately was probably more a batsman than a bowler at Test level. Did not take a mountain of test wickets, despite playing a lot of Tests. Not exactly a like for like replacement for Warne.

Still, I find it difficult to judge those players of the first 30 or so years of Test match cricket. You can glean a lot of info from people who saw someone like O'Reilly or Grimmett bowl but there are very few still around who can recall watching Rhodes.

If any yesteryear bowler deserved a spot in the side, it would be SF Barnes.

also depends on the deck.

Jack Hobbs
Sunil Gavaskar
Donald Bradman
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Garry Sobers
Adam Gilchrist
Shane Warne
Malcom Marshall
Dennis Lillee
Curtley Ambrose

12th Vivian Richards

Spewing I couldn't fit Viv in, he was my favourite batsman growing up and an absolute freak in the field in his day. I was nearly tempted to drop either Sachin or Lara and bat Viv at 4.

Jack Hobbs
Len Hutton
Don Bradman
Brian Lara
Sachin Tendulkar
Garry Sobers
Adam Gilchrist

Imran Khan
Shane Warne
Dennis Lillie
Malcolm Marshall

Viv Richards
Muttiah Muralidaran
Curtly Ambrose
Sunil Gavaskar

I couldnt stop at XI, I had to post the whole squad of XV :D

Players in bold surely pick themselves, no mean feat to have 5 of 11 certain starters over 130+ years!

My selections:

Sir Jack Hobbs (Eng)
Gordon Greenidge (WI)
Sir Donald Bradman (Aus-capt)
Allan Border (Aus)
Barry Richards (SAfr)
Sir Richard Hadlee (NZ)
Adam Gilchrist (Aus)
Shane Warne (Aus)
Dennis Lillee (Aus)
Jeff Thomson (Aus)
Glenn McGrath (Aus)

12th: Graham Pollock (SAfr)

AB was good over an extended period of time, but had none of the natural talent that Sachin, Lara, Vivian or even Ponting Had. If I was to have him in my team, he would be there to captain.
