Northcote won the inaugural 1961 VFA Division 2 Premiership and was promoted to Division 1. The Dragons held their place in 1962 but fell to last in 1963 this meaning relegation back to Division 2. Or did it? Division 1 VFA team Moorabbin was expelled from the league at the end of 1963; perhaps the Dragons would be allowed to stay in top division? The answer was no - Northcote were relegated back to Division 2 and Division 2 1963 Premiers Preston and runners-up the Waverley Panthers were both promoted. Waverley had only joined the VFA in 1961 and would go on to be Division 1 Premiers by 1965.
As for Northcote, they remained in Division 2 year after year, not getting another shot at premiership glory and the associated promotion to Division 1 until 1982, when they defeated Caulfield in the 1982 Division 2 Grand Final. But it didn't. The VFA had recast the divisions in 1981 with no promotion or relegation in 1982, so the Dragons had to stay in Division 2 and the 1982 Division 1 wooden spooner got to stay in the top division. Who were the 1982 Division 2 wooden spooners? They were the Waverley Panthers, who finally got relegated after finishing last again in 1983. This time it was new team the Springvale Scorpions that got the promotion, winning the 1983 Division 2 Grand Final in their second season. Northcote remained in Division 2 until they disbanded after the 1987 season.
It would seem that Northcote didn't like Waverley very much after twice being thwarted by them in odd circumstances 20 years apart, but it did lead to some quirks. For example Waverley never got to meet the original Moorabbin in the early 1960s, but it would meet the Kangaroos in Division 2 when the resurrected team was admitted back into the VFA in 1983. However, Waverley and Springvale would never meet each other once in either division. Where did the Waverley Panthers play during their VFA years? It was Central Reserve, at the intersection of Waverley and Springvale Roads. And when Springvale's home ground at Newcomen Reserve was no longer up to standard in the VFL from 2000 onwards, the Scorpions played home games at the now closed AFL venue Waverley Park and at Dandenong's Shepley Oval, before moving to Casey from 2005 and rebranding as Casey Scorpions (now Demons).

2016 Western Bulldogs won flag; Premiership Player Joel Hamling went to Fremantle the following year
2019 Richmond won flag; Premiership Player Brandon Ellis went to Gold Coast the following year.
That is off the top of my head. I am sure there would be others.

Not a coincidence per se, but I just realised every AFL grand final winner (out of 33) except 7 (Bombers 93 and 00, Blues 95, Roos 96 and 99, Dogs 16, Demons 21) are birds or felines. Bombers are basically metal birds lol.
Also teams based right by the coast - Fremantle, St Kilda and Gold Coast (Port is actually on an estuary) - have only won one premierships between them, and none in the AFL era.

St. Kilda and a team not on the second list (Sydney) sit about as close to the coast proper as each other.

I guess Sydney is on the harbour, which is an inlet of the ocean, maybe the way Port Philip is. Both are away from the more open ocean.
