Jimmy Bartel was an absolute gun. Nobody can really dispute that.

Would it be underrating Jimmy Bartel by saying whilst his best was better than the likes of Shane Woewodin & Adam Cooney whom also won Brownlow Medals he was/is a worse player than most others who've won the award?

Whether you like them or not you've got Brownlow Medallists such as Akermanis, Ricciuto, Voss, Hird, Buckley, Goodes, Ablett, Judd, Dangerfield, Martin, Fyfe, Swan, Harvey, Mitchell, Cousins as a core example whom either were better players individually or will undoubtedly finish their career better.

If you can take away the fact Jimmy is a triple premiership player for a second which would overrate him in this regard, he seems to fit with the next tier down like Matt Priddis and Trent Cotchin instead for mine and with the Mark Ricciuto thread going around at the moment I was wondering what others on here think regarding Bartel's career.

I reckon you are hard on Bartel, but hard on Cotchin too (popular sport that). Putting him with Priddis......
Bartel sits comfortably in the mix of names you mentioned for me. I reckon because Gazza was there he didn't get the kudos he should have. He is a low key guy too, so didn't put himself out there as much.

I reckon he was grouse in clutch situations especially, and that elevates people for me, performing when required.

Brownlow medalists all sit together, they all won an award voted on by the umpires.
People love ranking them but they are all the same.
When you consider that arguably the 3 greatest players to ever play the game, Ablett snr, Carey and Matthews never won one then that is about where the Brownlow sits. Just an umpires award and none are ranked better than any other.

In recent memory I think players like Cotchin, Bartel, Mitchell and Cooney are not quite at the level of the other Brownlow medalists. I mean they are all very very good players, but not quite as good as the other recent Brownlow medal winners, at least over a single season. Mitchell's and Bartel's careers have so far been better than Fyfe's, though Fyfe's best season has been better than Mitchell's and Bartel's best season.

Leigh Matthews, Ablett senior and Carey are widely regarded as the best to ever play the game and never won it so whether you like it or not every name you mention in your post isn't as good a player as those 3. Also jimmy isn't overstated in any sense, he sits comfortably as a genuine gun as an afl player.

My favourite ever non-eagle, maybe not as good as some of those players over his career but was the equal of any of them when the big games rolled around.

Probably sits on Andrew McLeod level for me, who also interestingly isn't a Brownlow medallist but certainly would have been a worthy winner.

Just as good a career as Sam Mitchell IMO. One of 7 players to do the Brownlow/Norm Smith double
One of only two players to do the 300game/Brownlow/Norm Smith trifecta along with Simon Black

Only two players in the history of the game achieved what Jimmy did the other being Simon Black to group him with Priddis and Cotchin is a massive disservice to Bartel

The problem for Bartel is Geelongs Midfield was so damn good that he was more used as a utility around the ground.

He sacrificed individual glory for the good of the team.

His self-sacrifice in the 2009 GF to go from ball winner in the first quarter to quelling a rampant Lenny Hayes for the final 3 quarters will be a thing of legend

I rate Bartel, but come on James, what kind of adult still demands to be called Jimmy as an adult? Does he still beg mum for paddlepops in the supermarket?

I hate Geelong but love Bartel. Loved his versatility and his ability to turn a game - even against us!

I also reckon he’s a super bloke too. That article about his dad a couple of years ago paints a picture of a tough, resilient and sensitive bloke who can turn the shittest of situations around

Favourite Cat player of the last while
