1.2 m !! There should be no question about where Gaff should be playing next year.

Hmmm 6 years.......will b 33. Could b a liabilities if he cops a bad injury early. Risky.........also he comes in as top of his class very hard to take then nect level like higgins.

If you think North have a better list and prospects going forward then good luck to ya fella.

Right now? No.

If we land Gaff, Polec & Kelly? Our better KPP strength gives us the edge.

If the numbers being thrown around are accurate there is no way we will match imo. You can't bluff match to force a trade when you can't afford it and the player doesn't want to be there, especially when everyone knows its a bluff anyway. If we matched and North walked away we would be royally ******

That’s where the Hawks were smart in not matching for Buddy Franklin. It was a ridiculous offer that would have tied 1 player down to the club, for nearly a decade. The ridiculous compo pick we got was still a win, as we were able to trade it for Ben McEvoy. It would been worse if we tried to bluff, Sydney didn’t have anything to realisticly trade, it would have set us back, as we would have lost a lot of players due to the contract.

Even with those 3 additions I'd take our list.

Under 100 games: Gawn, Viney, Oliver, Brayshaw, Petracca, Lever, Hogan, Harmes, Salem, Weideman, Fritsch, Neal-Bullen, vandenBerg, Hannan, and I could keep going. Frost, Kent, Oscar McDonald, Spargo, Stretch...

We'll agree to differ.

1.2mil per season. That won't be matched and he is gone.

Fair enough in the end, you are only at the top for a short period of time and if you can get that for 5 years the you have to take it.

As you said WCE went match that because it would be a bluff and an obvious one.

If North are throwing 1.2mil at Gaff and the n 750 at Polec for 5. Then that's just a tick under 2mil for 5 years on 2 mids. Good players no doubt but that's a lot coin.

You started out looking like you might be able to discuss the topic maturely but it's all fallen apart in the last couple of pages.

Maturity in this thread has imploded with all the Norths posters prancing around claiming they have it in t he bag and no other Vic club has a chance.

If Gaff was speaking the truth and team success is a key part of his decision then Norths wont be at the top of his list.

Maybe paying $300k pa more than the market rate will adjust his definition of success.;)

Is there a definitive list of clubs that he should go to for success? What's the order?

Regardless, players and agents talk. Hypothetically, he might see Polec is likely to join, and he might have information that Kelly is likely to follow, so suddenly North's prospects look quite good in the next 2-3 years.

There's also been some mail that he is not wanting to join a bigger club as he would like to get out of the media bubble after spending his career in a two-team town. North definitely ticks a box there.

And of course money is a factor. Does your salary matter to you?

If WC could do it I'd be matching both. Even if the other club does walk away (which is enormously unlikely imo) you can always just trade the bloke next year and get rid of the bloated contract for more than the pick 18/19 you'd get for free-agency compo this year anyway.

There will be a lot of difficulty and careful management in keeping that lot of players together, and more power to Melbourne if they can. Viney, Oliver and Brayshaw are an absolutely elite engine room who get constant silver service from the best tap ruck in the league.

Melbourne are much better poised moving forward than North are, particularly if they can inject some pace, but Melbourne's list will take a lot more careful management to keep together.

or they are stuck with the contract because nobody wants to takeit of their hands, or they have to settle for a pick worth less than compo, or Gaff has too much power requesting where the trade goes.

Nah hes either at WC for long term or he won't be there next year.
