There will be a lot of difficulty and careful management in keeping that lot of players together, and more power to Melbourne if they can. Viney, Oliver and Brayshaw are an absolutely elite engine room who get constant silver service from the best tap ruck in the league.

Melbourne are much better poised moving forward than North are, particularly if they can inject some pace, but Melbourne's list will take a lot more careful management to keep together.

Agree completely. Have a tonne of players that will require a serious pay rise. We have to focus on resigning these players in the next few years opposed to dedicating a large portion of our salary to a big trade. I feel we need an outside runner and a smaller financial investment like Ed Langdon or Aaron Hall would make more sense to me.

The risk is no one is going to give up picks plus pay a bloated $1.2 million contract for 4-5 years. We would either have to be prepared to pay most of the $ or take a very late pick should a team be willing to pay him that much and i doubt many would. Both of those options are worse than just taking the compo pick now

I think your underrating your own player massively somehow. There is no situation imaginable that you wouldn’t be able to get pick 18 for Gaff next year. As I said I’d more than happily give up 5 for an AA mid on a long term deal from Freos POV.

Now maybe there’s too much hassle to bother but there’s certainly basically zero risk.

Gaff choosing not to re-sign this season would certainly be the risk. No player, no compo. All the stuff I've heard so far about Gaff is his main reason for leaving would be returning to Victoria for family/partner reasons.

So trading Gaff whilst under contract would only land us pick 20 next year?

Riiiiiigght!!

I can't work out if you're deliberately ignoring what I said or just misread it?

If Gaff signed a two-year deal he will be an unrestricted free agent after 2020, so what club is going to offer you better than a late first rounder after 2019? Bearing in mind those who get picks inside the top 12 or so probably aren't going to be in flag contention in 2020. You might get lucky but it would be a pretty risky move.

Zero risk? What if no one is willing to pay him $1.2 million a season? He is getting that offer now because North are cashed up more than nearly any team in recent history and because they don't have to trade for him

Neither.

Just think you are waaaay off the mark.

Will get more trading 12 months than a compo pick now or in two years.

In 12 months Gaff will be 27 and a multiple AA midfielder. And you think all he would get at the trade table is an early 2nd round pick?

I think that the teams who would have picks in the top 10-12 probably aren't going to give them up for a guy they could get for free a year later. That's not a reflection on Gaff's quality at all.

Absolutely they would. If they can secure that type of player instead of getting in a bidding war they'd be very happy.

A pick in the later teens say 16 plus a fringe player or later pick swaps is a heap better than pick 19 or 20.

Trading can provide more flexibility as well. Gaff plus a late 2nd for an earlier first.

The compo pick for Gaff alone sucks and is massively under market value. That is agreed by 99% of posters on here.

I think it would be agreed by 100% of posters on here.

Shit happens though... you're a victim of your own success. If you were bottom 4-6 you'd be chomping down the compo.

They may do, but as good as Gaff is he is probably not going to be the sort of difference maker for a mid-table side to give up their first pick. That is the risk you'd be taking if you signed him on a short term deal and tried to trade him in 12 months. Probably not all that relevant however as that would seem like a pretty far-fetched scenario.

Plus comparing what you'd get in compo to a potential trade in 12 months is pretty pointless - you're not going to match a huge seven year bid and then try and trade him a year later.

Agree.

North are now officially out of the race, they know we'll match and they no longer have the carrot of sending Billy Hartung our way.

Nah, we agreed to delist him so we get an RFA and you get a DFA.

The Hawks and Gaff rumours were started by posters that are upset that North stole Hartung from them. If Gaff and Polec come to North that's 3 wingers that are better than Smith.

Explain how the Hawks would be upset that North stole a player that they had de-listed.

Exactly how does that work?

Do you think we Hawk posters are still upset North Stole Hartung?

Do you still think Billy is a better winger than Issac Smith?
