Of course we can back out of a trade. We're offering a premium to a free agent.
Good luck getting any players to agree to come to north as a free agent if that does occur , No player manager is going to allow their clients to commit to north if they leave them hanging. You offer the deal then its upto the club to get it done there wont be any conditions like we will only pay you this money if your club doesnt match the offer

Thats la la land stuff

how are they left hanging if their club matches the offer? they get that offer from them... cause it's matched, or they get it from us? If anything they'd be more wanting to talk to us.

To get them to commit to your club you sell them your club, Meaning we are the place for your future
It takes alot for a player to decide to move and that means accept an offer from your club and if you cant deliver after chasing the said player that means your club has left him hanging and he then goes back to the club and mates after deciding to leave them.

Its just not as simple as ohhh my club matched so i can stay

This is purely hypothetical though isn't it? You are making these statements like they're demonstrably true.

The fact is, the situation you describe has never actually occurred. So how can you assert how it would play out?
I really dont feel its my place to educate you on these things as it should have been your parents that teach you about what the ramifications on your decisions might be, but let me just enlighten you to a comment that Liam pickering made during the prestia / richmond trade period when asked by hutchy and what would happen if richmond didnt cough up the #6 to facilitate the trade.

pickering : The club would have to convince the player that they have the ability to get it done for the player to come

No more but but please - Good night

Like I said, the situation you describe has simply never occurred. Yet you insist you know how it would shake out?

Polec and Gaff both offerd over a mil each.

That’s a lot of money for just 2 players

They'll make well over those numbers next year. Meaning Polec for the final four years of his contract will play for 350-400k, and gives North room to pay another high profile target.

Almost as if experts mostly run football clubs and leave the peanut gallery to the sandbox which is threads like this.

If we weren't prepared to trade for Gaff, he would be well aware of this and would factor it in before making a decision re: his 2019 club.

There's not going to be a situation where we're suddenly scrambling to find a suitable trade because we've been caught blind. List management and footy department guys are working on these deals and hypothetical scenarios all year around with player agents. We'll almost certainly have a good idea of what West Coast are unlikely to match and will have based our offer and discussions around it.

No, list management guys scour BigFooty and Twitter for information.

None are aware of how the rules actually work as per contracts, trading etc, and thus require the valuable input of posters on here who do.

North paying Polec 1.2m and Gaff 1.5m ... where does the money for Kelly come from?

If they are both heavily front loaded in 2019 then they could drop away in 2020 opening up spare money for Kelly.

But let’s get them 1st before worrying about next year. Until it is announced I won’t get too excited.

Josh will be slinging Mazda's, waiting tables on the Spirit of Tassie and doing security shifts at the Queensbury St. Chemist Warehouse.

What happens if North sign no one? Is there a plan B to reallocate the salary cap space?
