You lot are jumping at shadows.

I think most people are sympathetic to the Bali Nine and believe they have done their time.

That is a good headline for Albanese. What should it have said?
A balanced paper would have stated "Albo bravely frees Bali victims"

Convicted Bali 9 returned to australia after serving 20 year sentence
When the terrorists who bombed Sari Club and killed people got less than the Bali 9 drug mules, something didn't add up
Murdoch is going scorched earth because it's not a LNp government doing same here. Their tedium continues on

JobSeeker and JobKeeper were no more or less well-designed that the initial stimulus response to the GFC.

It is conventional wisdom that as far as stimulus packages to avoid recessions concern, the primary concern (and nearly the only concern) is getting the money out the door, no matter who it goes too. Rightly or wrong
Hmmm… They had plenty of time to correct the decision not to support universities, so that was just plain ideologically-driven vindictiveness.

Who cares what the corporates and papers say, they can't get gas, coal or iron ore anywhere else in the globe if their profit margin goes down 5%.
No but they can mount another relentless, and apparently endless anti-government ad campaign until the government falls and a more compliant mob (gee, I wonder who that could be?) are installed.

Public universities, private one's got jobkeeper no worries.

Great angle on this analysis from Michelle Grattan who asks

Will 'grumpy men' vote Labor out in 2025?

Not sure if it's the same on other club's boards but any discussion of politics on the Port boards is dominated by angry blokes whining about Albanese and wanting to see the back of him even from those who think that Dutton is a far worse alternative offering at best nothing but piss and wind. It's a sentiment that is coming through in polling of voting intentions:

'The polls show the partisan gender divide on voting and leadership. This week’s Essential poll, on a two-party basis, has the Coalition on 51% among men, and Labor on 44%, with 4% undecided. Among women, Labor is on 49% and the Coalition on 46%, with 5% undecided.'

'The Resolve poll earlier this month had, as preferred prime minister, Dutton polling 40% among men, and Albanese 34%, with the rest undecided. Among women, Albanese was on 36% and Dutton on 31%.'

Did the campaign by miners really influence voters or did Gillard panic and dump the tax when in reality polls were low for other reasons?

Good question
Probably a bit of column A and B
Whatever the rationale, the Mining lobby created a template for every other industry group on how to achieve goals

Or we have busy lives so mainly look at their news from sources like the ABC and AFR and don't waste time sitting around trying to analyse every bit of rubbish out there.
It's always 0 or 100 with you guys.

You don't have to analyse everything, I certainly don't.

We're getting falsely accused of living in a bubble, then apparently it's also strange or we must have too much time on our hands, if we actually consume some news media from sources that are partisan toward the other side.

Bit inconsistent.

So "Grumpy men" may be more important than "Whiny women" this election.
I guess the transgenders will be causing the swings next time.

The campaign by the miners is two-fold.

One is to attack the anti-mining policy by advertising in all media about it.

They used that advertising spend to leverage the rest of the coverage to also be anti-Govt.

So, also amplifying those "other reasons".

The obvious thing to do would be to link the MRRT to social-value non-discretionary spending. Things like paving and widening regional roads, new regional health infrastructure, upgrading the Bruce Highway, sporting fields, stadia, parks, new ports, wind farms and the rest into the Future Fund. Give the income would be more sporadic, and for political reasons it's best to tie it to things like that rather than general revenue.

That was where they failed last time, didn't sell the benefits and so got skewered on the exaggerated disbenefits (all the miners will leave and take their coal and gas with them?)

Who can say.

The received wisdom is they just pressured her till she caved, and they'd only spent (IIRC) $20 million from a budget of $100 mil, saving themselves many billions in tax.

But only Gillard could say what decided it for her.
