In this day and age there is no excuse to have such a poor playing surface. It's amazing that someone didn't suffer a season ending knee injury tonight.
Surely the AFL could arrange the match to be played as far away as possible from the nearest NRL fixture in order for the ground to be brought up to AFL standard.

that mark in the first qtr created a huge hole, easily could have caused a few ankle injuries as well as knees

Definitely, and it's not just due to the state of origin game played during the week either. The ground was in equally as poor condition when we played west coast earlier this year.

Yeah it was a disgrace when Australia played China there 13 days ago in the last world cup qualifier. The bloody State of Origin was there on Wednesday. I think thats enough time to put it together.

Maybe the Swans should just play more at the SCG. The crowd didnt look heaps more than 40,000.

The crowd was 59,000, almost 50% extra than what the SCG can hold.

Was going to start a thread on this myself, but good to see someone else is horrified by it.

Totally unacceptable. Cloke took a diving mark at one stage it it looked like he bloody shifted the tectonic plates. So much turf flew up i'm surprised he didn't bury himself 6 feet under.

This surface is FAR worse than the telstra dome of a few years ago. We can't put our athletes on this crap. I know 20 years ago they played in cows paddocks, but the game is worth so much more in monetary value these days, the risk is too great.

I think they had the siding stands out on ground for origin!

Did you see Jolly try to bounce the ball on it?... it would have rebounded more if it was water!

Still Collingwood dealt with it much better! They just marked it:eek:

That surface was ridiculous. Another reason for us to purchase it soon. When football becomes bigger in Sydney we will have more of a say.

But i suppose the SoO could not have happened elsewhere.

If everybody is so concerned about perfect playing surfaces, maybe we should play every home and away game at Telstra Dome with no wind, no rain etc etc. Cmon, AFL have been spoilt the last 10 years or so, they need to toughen up, its just grass for pete's sake. Both teams were playing on the same surface, no team had an advantage.

It's nothing to do with which team had the advantage. It's to do with the ground being soft and dangerous. A bogged down western oval was much safer to play on than that disgrace of a ground. Did you actually watch the game? Whenever a players knee or boot hit the turf it looked like someone had started to dig for treasure.

That was an absolute joke. Bloody ruined a good mark to:D. But seriously it looked like a checkered quilt out there, so many different shades of green, which cannot be good. What a shambles.

It is terrible because it is used too much. Every weekend it has at least one NRL game (usually 2), as well as hosting soccer, union and AFL. The ground is overused (moving the stands doesn't help either) but the turf in general has always been poor.

I agree. All thos whinging about the surface need to harden the f up.

There is far more danger in playing at the SCG or Gabba with cricket wickets in place than a very soft Homebush. Sure its not perfect, but you'll find the number of injuries at Homebush is less than the average.

The only problem with the ground is the look, and footing.

You would think that this problem could be kept to a mimimum for the AFL if the events programmed for the ground for Soccer,Union,Rugby League and anything else are known before the AFL fixture is decided - Of course it may be an idea to not be determined to have a certain game on a particular week end - if there needs to be a break then all have the break together and schedule the Pies v Swans at the most suitable time
