Anzac Ceremony for every game

I was going to go to the Dawn Service here in Adelaide but I don't want to miss lining up for the first session of 'Avengers - Infinity War' so I won't be able to make it this year.

There's a superimposed "Lest We Forget" banner on the screen on the broadcast.

Which begs the question? Lest we forget what? The "sacrifice" the diggers made for us? Turkey wasn't threatening Australia in 1915 in any way, shape or form. Nor has the "bad guy" in any conflict outside of Japan 1941-45. Surely our politicians would love for us to forget why Australia gets involved in most wars, especially in the Middle East this century.

The "Anzackery" has gone completely overboard. If you're a target of the tabloid media and say anything perceived as negative towards Anzac Day you get viciously attacked the day after. If you want to release a movie into theatres that day you get viciously attacked on breakfast TV. Every corporation ties in Anzac Day marketing now.

Honestly, cancel the public holiday, allow ex and current military and their families to attended dawn ceremonies, then from mid-morning life goes on as normal.

Absolutely no need for the mid morning Anzac parades now as well. We don't live in North Korea and need to see columns of soldiers and tanks marching down the streets, and fighters doing flyovers as well. Take the saved taxpayer's money and put it into Medicare so everyone (military and non-military alike) can have better mental healthcare etc.
Totally. It's being driven by a small interest group what's more.

A publicist friend of mine had to do publicity for a WWII commemorative project a couple of years ago. So that meant this was 2 years into the WWI Centenary commemorations, and she couldn't get any traction for this project at all. The reason? Editor after editor told her that the public had already found the centenary stuff over the top, and had had enough of all militaria for the time being. Books weren't selling, weren't being reviewed, planned TV series were being quietly cancelled...

God I love the left getting their jimmy's rustled about ANZAC day.

I for one will be thinking of all of those that went before us on ANZAC Day.
Interested to know your opinion on the multiple death and rape threats that Jassmin Abdel-Magied received for saying something totally unremarkable last Anzac Day then.

What has footy got to do with Anzac Day and war?
I’ll answer for you , absolutely nothing
Thank god there’s other thinking people out there who I agree with and are starting to question the narrative around Anzac Day
I was at the pub last night before the game and the subject came up, I said I didn’t like the way it’s done , it was like I was having a go at mother Theresa ,or I was in a muslim country having a beer in a mosque
I’ve come full circle on Anzac Day , watched as a child how my grandfather ignored it, even though he lost his fingers WW2, my dad spent the day with his Vietnam mates and pisssed it up
Did the dawn service thing for a few years , got emotional at them , until the last couple of years I’ve gone to the march in town only to watch a bunch of firefighters, cops and school kids walking down the street .. wtf?
Truth be known most of the anzacs from WW1 and 2 are dead , most who lost anyone close to them in both wars are too, the ones that aren’t probably prefer to forget the horrors of war
My dads mates asked if I wanted to match for him once I declined, it’s nothing to do with me , it’s thier Day
Anzac Day should have been allowed to fade slowly away from our conscience as those people unfortunate enough to experience war passed
Shoot me down if you may but it’s just the way I feel
The thought of the AFL turning the day into a commercial opportunity sickens me
War is and always will be evil

Every game is over the top IMO. If they must do it, just the game on the actual day.

Never really got the whole ANZAC day thing. Remembrance Day seemed to do the job without attached jingoism. Ah well, each to their own I suppose.

Before the mid 90’s, ANZAC day wasn’t a day “celebrated”, it was commemorated

Selling Anzac Day caps is disgustingly corny and tacky (unless the money raised is being donated to the RSL or a similar organisation)

People can just quietly donate the full $50 (or whatever the cap is) to the rsl. I bet they won’t.

It’s not about turning the AFL into the NFL. It’s about respect for your country and the National Anthem should be played before every game IMO

No.

Nice try. That is disgusting behaviour. My point is that those that tend to lean towards the left seem to get up in arms about ANZAC Day every year. Death threats to someone who makes stupid comments are disgusting.

Maybe right, but do we have to assume that is automatically a bad thing? It's worth keeping in mind, there is no "right" and 'wrong" way to commemorate or not commemorate Anzac Day. It's not written into the constitution or anything. So why shouldn't we continue to discuss and question its relevance and meaning?

I'm old enough to have witnessed enormous change in the way the day is viewed, in my lifetime. I remember the massive anti-war protests of the late 60s and early 70s. So the current interpretation is very recent indeed; absolutely not set in stone.

As I pointed out in an earlier post, many WWII ex-POWs like my grandpa never even took part in Anzac Day marches. They felt they'd been thrown on the scrapheap, and that no-one understood their special hell anyway.

And loathe as I am to view this through a left Vs right prism, I'm also old enough to remember homeless men dossing down for the night on Wynyard Ramp and around the city parks, missing limbs, eyes, or with hideous facial disfigurements, many clearly with terrible mental health issues.

Most of these men were war veterans. This was still a daily reality in Sydney in the 60s and 70s.

And the reason it existed, was because the welfare state that we all take for granted now, wasn't nearly as generous as it is today.

And the welfare state is essentially the creation of the left. So, whether deliberately or inadvertently, the polices of the left have had a hugely beneficial effect on the health and well-being of our returned service personnel, which after all, is the true measure of how much we respect their sacrifices.

That would be just about the last thing I would ever want to see. Having it before every marquee game and final is bad enough.

I know I’m Australian. I don’t need some faux sung reminder of that every week.

Get your hand off it. All clubs are guilty of this Anzac shit - including yours which saw the success of Anzac Day so started this yearly “Anzac Day Eve” crap.
Hey hey hey
Let’s not brandish west coast, Adelaide and gws with such a broad statement
We don’t get given a chance as freo/port/Sydney monopolised it in their respective states.

Here is the sort of headline (admittedly it’s only from the FootyLive ap, but still) that induced maximum levels of cringe:

I mean, what meaningless drivel. It’s football.
Agreed. Football, unlike war, is a good thing and has a place in modern democracy
