Anzac Ceremony for every game

For me there is something about it being spread out this much that feels pretty contrived.

The wider discussion about the commercialisation of Anzac Day and football's role in that is a factor also; but my overwhelming feeling seeing them doing the ceremony tonight was "Really? Anzac Day (the day, not the game) is still five days away".

To me it feels like football is using the day for its own gain and this is just the latest iteration of it, and it's not especially tasteful to watch.

ANZAC day is a disgraceful celebration of war designed as a marketing tool to attract the next lambs to the slaughter and reduce the compensation to the families who lost their loved ones.

Would you mind explaining the mechanism through which ANZAC Day reduces the compensation to the families of the fallen? I haven't heard this criticism levelled against the day before.

I daresay you wouldn't have this view if your grandfather had been an ANZAC. They deserve every moment of respect they get. There is nothing lost by having the tribute before the game.

What makes you say that? Mine was, he was a great man too, what do Sydney and Adelaide football clubs have to do with what he went through nearly 80 years ago? I think it's crass

Wow. So 9 ANZAC tributes a year before the footy to men who sacrificed their life for this country offends you. No words.

Entitlement at its finest is all I can say.
Dont kid yourself.
This is AFL marketing. Going over the top to cash in.
I have no prob with paying respects all through 'Anzac round' but the chilling beauty of hearing the last post on ANZAC DAY is lost when you've heard it 8 times prior.

the only answer is to only watch your game and nothing else. won't channel 7 and Foxtel be happy with that... landline will be down during each game.. lol

The defence industry primarily preserves the assets of the rich. We once would have called these lords.

The sons of lords were faced with a dilemma being the carving up on their fathers lands into ever smaller parcels. As such the second or third son would buy his rank as an officer.

Often these officers would join the British navy with the explicit goal of new lands to become lords themselves. Australia is a great example of this.

Meanwhile the ords would sign up or Shanghai’d to defend the lords land or conquer new land. When they died, instead of compensating the families, the officers would give them a medal and a ceremony.

This military custom continues today despite well established compensation policies for civilian enterprises.

This is especially horrid given the basic concept of risk reward. The lord has all the rewards which they don’t share but little risk if they don’t have to pay compensation.

Perhaps nations wouldn’t be so fast to go to war if they offered compensation rather than medals, trumped up stories of heroics and celebrations.

So you are basically criticising the military industrial complex. I still don't see how ANZAC Day specifically is taking compensation away from families. If I get slotted while I'm over here my family certainly won't get nothing. Australia has also never been a nation that had nobility in the fashion that you are talking about, so your argument falls a little flat for me.

You know all teams could attend a dawn service on Anzac day.
They don't even need to do that - they can merely take some time out of their day to reflect on, and pay respects to our fallen soldiers.

The notion that it all needs to be ceremonial and official is missing the point on what the day is actually about. It's nice to have those elements, but it's not vital in the slightest.

Speaking as someone who does attend a dawn service and have had family members in the parade.

I know, Play all games this round on ANZAC day! Problem solved!

Doh!
Forgot that the night is soley reserved for two Victorian teams only and the rest of the teams and fans can get stuffed, No ANZAC ceremonial for you lol

We've played the Demons in Canberra on Anzac day. I think the single game is a midweek thing. The Melbourne game will happen, but it's not necessarily exclusive.

As for the ceremonies I think those decisions should somehow be driven by ex servicemen, their families and descendants. I'm not a fan of the rampant nationalism that accompanies the remembrance.

No. 9 acts of respect for the heroes is perfect. Every person of every generation must know the history and understand that we are blessed that a large majority of us will never know what its like to fell the hell that war is. I love this weekend, and been to many anzac day games including 95 theres no weekend of footy like it. Having the tribute at all games makes every game special and not only fans at the pies dons game but all teams fans can feel the emotion the moment deserves. This is a horrible thread actually disgusting. I feel sorry for whoever has criticized the anzac tritubtes.

At least we're remembering the NZ part of Anzac this year, though IMO the ceremonial stuff should be restricted to Anzac Day only.

The only day of the year I like the Haka. Sends shivers down my spine in the same way as the Last Post makes me very emotional.

ANZAC Day only please or else **** off AFL you grubby campaigners.

The ratio of support pers to trigger pullers is at least three. 'Getting paid to kill people' applies to a very small number. What was your ECN? If you tell me you were in the Q store I will laugh you off this thread.

Same as me, Navy, so unless he was a Clearance Diver it would be all tax free gravy sitting safely offshore.

It's entirely appropriate to use the moments before a football game to pay respect to the ANZACs and their sacrifices made.

It's entirely inappropriate to use the abovementioned tribute to the ANZACs as a means to market said games of football.

Channel 7 are running with "A match which always epitomises the ANZAC fighting spirit"

Just cringe.
