Perhaps not, but it’s ..blah blah blah

So the dumbing down suggests that the Royal Navy never constructed enough Dreadnoughts to protect Australia in WWI, and that Chamberlain was a coward, who alone took the commonwealth to war , despite protestations from its supposed Euro allies during WWII.

Oh!, and if it wasn't for the USA the Allies would have lost?

lol

Well... the British do. And have an affinity with "glorious" military defeats. :)

Name a country with a better military record

Havent lost at home since 1066 and have dominated away vs the French and Germans.

Re charge of the light brigade, they (and the French) beat the Russians in that war.

As a descendant of Irish Republicans, I agree totally with Keating.

That explains it.

But it has me beaten as to why other military battles that were so much more important for us as a nation, are not promoted. Beersheba and the Palestinian campaign especially.

Agree here. Beersheba and Romani are rarely mentioned despite the light horse charging vs machine guns (often held up to be the last examples of doing so).

O rly?

Would you believe it or not, Canada? ;)

Yes, but that action was an out and out balls up. Yet it was many years before it was looked upon with any objectivity.

That explains it.
Just like I'm the descendent of an important explorer. ;)

Uh-oh, spaghetti-o. Mine was meant to be a comment on what Bumble Bee was saying and NMWBloods was replying to - Bumble Bee was questioning your historical sources, Bloods was wondering if Bumble Bee was sleighting your knowledge of history and I was simply putting to Bloods what I thought Bumble Bee actually meant.

I understand what you were saying, but I was interested to know what you thought my viewpoint was (according to Bumblebee).

In any case I don't really take much notice of what Bumblebee has to say. He's too busy assuming an air of superiority through typing 'lol' in every post he makes. He may question my historical sources all he likes, but as he doesn't offer any of his own, I really don't take much notice of what he says.

absolutely, its the biggest joke that we 'celebrate' Gallipolli every year, we were used and abused by the Brits, why do we hang our hat on this tragedy that is Gallipolli? Because we don't have much else in the way of history overseas. Makes me spew every time Anzac day comes around, especially the sentimental crap that goes with the football match:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

It stems from the desperate sense Aussies have to prove their own identity as a nation. Other countries celebrate the end of WWI (Remembrance day). We celebrate the start - the day we finally proved we were able to needlessly sacrifice young men, just like the other big boys.

Its not just ANZAC day, though. We overhype sports stars who can compete on the world stage, our prime ministers (Rudd and Howard) just love getting their photo taken with the big boys at any opportunity, and we insist on being leaders on things like the Kyoto protocol - not because WE want to do it, but because it'll reaffirm our importance on the global stage.

Time we developed a bit of self-confidence, I reckon.

Celebrating sporting acheivements as a means to an identity is not a bad substitue I reckon, btdg.

It certainly beats celebrating wars, one or lost,in my view.

HAving said that I pretty much agree with you.I'd like us to be the nation who celebrates the fact we don't give a shit about identity,or how we are perceived. That would be an identity in itself.

Or what about womens right to vote., the eight hour day, or the minimum wage? There is plenty to celebrate that doesn´t involve killing innocent brown people in far, far away lands :thumbsu:
NZ gave women the right to vote first.

As for the 'eight hour day' - what a joke - Australians work more hours than people in any other developed country.

The Turks were hardly 'innocent brown people'.
And there are far more interesting things to recognise in other countries than our exciting bogan sports heroes.

Uh uh... South Australia

All the more reason to recognise outr roots

The Turks were hardly 'innocent brown people'.

Oh, that's right, they were poised to invade Australia!

lol.

Roy tell me, tell us, what was the trigger which ignited the so called 'Cold War'.

Was it the common-garden Anglo-Saxon genetics or the Old testament fervour? Jesus!

Whose history books are you reading?

Readers digest?
