Are Port Adelaide one of the most unluckiest teams in history to miss the finals?

It would be a lot easier to feel some sympathy for them had they not been so insipid in their final two games of the season, when finals were still possible (albeit remote in the last game).

9th, probably better than where they should be to be honest.

Ordinary and aging list, topped up with a few seasoned players who for whatever reason couldn’t perform this year.

Ordinary coach and his accompanying brigade of assistants.

Yeah they should be happy with 9th as I reckon Essendon and North are better teams and will leap frog them next year.

It's the coaching and game plan. They can play a very tough and intense style, but geez is every goal hard work and earned. They need better scoring power to reward effort. Hinkley doesnt seem to be able to open up the forward half.
This. I don't have stats to back this up, but every game I've watched of theirs this year, they look lost going inside 50 in particular. More often than not just bang it in and hope for the best. Very poor connection between the mids and forwards. They have the cattle, just not playing smart, so questions need to be asked of coaching imo.

Strange isn't it. Wingard, Dixon , Gray , Wines potentially all in that forward half and they cant kick a winning score.

Not really, they only beat 3 top 8 teams and got double up games against only 1 top 8 team: WC, WBD, Freo, Adel, Ess.

They had a minimal injury list, their depth was finally tested late in the season when they did get some injuries, which really exposed them.

-Highly rated SPP has regressed
-I cant believe Pittard was selected in the AA squad a few years ago. Creates at least 2-3 goals against from turnovers every game
-Rockliff, Motlop and Watts have all had their worst years since 2013 statistically.

The whole list has had a poor year with the only improvements having come from Polec, Jonas and Westhoff.

All very fair.

No chance we have any excuse for not playing finals this year apart from just not being good enough. As someone said very early in the thread you make your own luck and through either game plan issues, underperforming stars or lack of depth we didn’t do what we needed to to succeed this year.

To be honest and unbiased, they were dealt some harsh cards towards the end of the season. The Adelaide game cost them dearly with that incorrect call giving the Crows a goal that clearly wasn't one. Then against the Gaff-less Eagles influential big man Paddy Ryder went down injured as well as focal point Charlie Dixon. Houston also joined them on the sidelines leaving Port just one interchange player and down 3 men. They only just get done after the siren so it wasn't as though they were blown off the park despite all of this. No question they were piss poor in the final two games and could have mounted a far better challenge and effort, but certainly they were stabbed with some pretty telling daggers in the Crows and Eagles games.

3 losses by under a kick to the Hawks, Crows and Eagles. Beat Richmond and Sydney away and the Dees at home but lost to West Coast twice { one was desperately unlucky as mentioned }Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn and GWS. only 3 wins out of 9 matches against top 8 sides. Two of those however could and almost certainly should have gone in the Powers favour.
Port Adelaide are ordinary and have been for a very long time, they don't deserve to be in the finals. Essendon are the ones with impressive feats like beating Geelong, Sydney and West Coast at home. Port Adelaide have just reverted back to being finals-less ftbs like in 2015-2016, unlike in 2017 when they were ftbs that maneuvered their way into the finals

Didn’t beat Richmond away

Heard Kochie on the radio last night say he was really pleased with Ken Hinkley’s coaching this year, so as long as he’s done enough to keep is job for another extension, then all is well and good.
Unless Port play finals next year Hinkley should go. And if the board think that those comments from the President are acceptable after ‘doing enough’ in 2018, then they probably need to think about how their standards are.

:thumbsu: You've no idea how much this type of stuff annoys me. Not sure what they are teaching in schools these days. I also have an issue with the phrase 'very unique'.
