A TURF war has broken out between Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson and Melbourne counterpart Dean Bailey over spy games before their Round 1 clash.

The pair had a heated phone conversation this week after Melbourne extracted vital information from a closed Hawthorn session on Friday.

Key points:

- Demons believe Ryan Schoenmakers or Campbell Brown will play forward
- Hawks have also trialled stoppage plays to cope without a back-up ruckman. New assistant coach Adam Simpson was one of the best exponents of that tactic at North Melbourne.
- Demons do not expect Cyril Rioli to play after he missed key sessions last week. But expect Grant Birchall to recover from leg soreness

But the Demons believe Hawthorn has filmed closed sessions at St Kilda's Moorabbin training ground over summer as it seeks to monitor the latest trends.

Hawthorn's Waverley base is surrounded by houses.
Some clubs are trying to find residents willing to let them watch from concealed spots.

Melbourne spy Dave Dunbar is the man at the centre of the dispute, with Clarkson furious how Dunbar avoids detection, including once dressing in a construction uniform to take advantage of the Waverley development.
He was spotted last year at Whitten Oval on the Gordon St off-ramp spying on the Bulldogs, and has used the trees surrounding Moorabbin to watch the Saints.

Cheeky bugger we will need a doorman at training soon to keep out the spy's.

Ha this is great (sorry Hawks supporters I just find it quite funny)

I remember two years ago when David Dunbar dressed up as a construction worker and had a look at a closed session down in Waverly. We lost by 100 odd points that day so I wouldn't be too worried at all boys.

Construct a giant temporary geodesic dome over the oval when training is on. Or maybe just a fence.

I don't think Melbourne really have much against us... I mean, so what if they "know" that Schoey is going to play up forward. Who do they have to counter this? Clutching at straws I think Mr. Bailey.

Whilst they can cry about it, might need to spend the $$ on some "Ground Surrounding Shadecloth" which can be raised as required?

Or hold closed sessions somewhere else.

We need to get over it as there's no point complaining. Footy clubs look for information on other footy clubs and we reside in a 'non lock up' stadium surrounded by a housing estate. End of story.

They should do their best to maintain strategic integrity (such as going off site occassionally) but in the end there is absolutely no point whinging about it. It's the nature of the game.

My thoughts exactly...costly outlay I'm sure...but we approved the plans/venue etc. Now we deal with it or stop complaining. Spying will only get worse in the future.

I live directly on the oval.
I can assure you - that if anyone wants me to lend them a room to spy on my Hawks, will get killed and buried at the construction site (new block of apartments) near Stadium Cafe.

I suggest for all the Waverley Park home owners to not let these spies in!

What a joke. Melbourne could have gotten that info from the dogs cocking legs around the streets of Waverley. I hope the spy hasn't been paid for that effort.

.

Lets look at the reality of the situation here.
We could give Melbourne our team lists know and the position charts we're playing everyone in, as well as detailing our game day strategy right down to the last handball and it still wouldn't help them.

Lets be honest, knowledge is one thing, but it means little when you don't have the personnel yet to be able to do much with it.

And as for the 'breaking news' bit of info about shoey potentially going forward, pretty sure we've already speculated that on numerous occasions of here? I would have thought any bloke over about 192cm would have been in line to replace buddy up forward.

I hear we sent a spy over to watch Melbourne train but he was sadly killed when he failed to spot the semi-trailer hurtling towards him because he was bent over in stitches at the quality of practice he was witnessing.
