Player Watch Ash Johnson (Delisted 2024)

We played Ash who gave us nothing up forward, no contesting and the coaching staff were also unwilling to use him in the ruck and allow us to play our settled version of the backline.

Kreuger might have done the first, would certainly have done the second and would be no worse than Ash in the ruck for a few minutes per quarter.

Ash’s form has been terrible, so the only rational argument for him over Kreuger is that Kreuger hadn’t gotten enough games under his belt yet and we wanted to set him up for success…

… but how does that mesh with then playing Dean on Darcy? Frampton up forward? Ash himself when horribly out of form? None of those guys were set up for success…
Maybe the coaching group were hoping Ash would play to his ability.

Sadly, it didn’t happen.

I’ve no problem with Krueger getting his chance against the Dees.

Hope he goes well.

The club's injuries forced this line-up. Picking Ash was likely deemed to be the lesser evil. Krueger might need more time.

I have been a Johnson fan, but he just looks completely shattered confidence wise. As his playing style is primarily talent based and not really effort based (not meant to be an insult as we are all different), he can't stay in the side even with our injuries, when his low confidence is not allowing his talent to come out. Unfortunately at the moment he is a bit of a passenger.

Apologies if that sounds harsh, but it is a ruthless industry.

In terms of what our forward line needs then it's Kreuger and easily.

Ash will go to another club and when that said teams has not too many injuries will be great as a third or fourth forward. Maybe the Tigers, Kangaroos, Port. In a structure that suits him better he will be good.

However in our structure which is generally at most two talls and we need someone to really compete hard then Ash is not that player. I don't want to see May destroy him again on Kings birthday. Cannot be allowed to happen.

But the durability of Ash is greater and Ash has more runs on the board than Kreugs and maybe that swung it in his favour.
can anyone tell me how many times Frampton competed in a forward contest / pack marking situation last night?

now, how many times did he win /break even or impact that aerial contest (vs AJ)?

selection was all wrong last night.

Dean out, Frampton back (on Darcy) and follow him into the ruck.

Kreuger in to play alongside AJ.

Now with Kreuger being physical & impacting aerially, AJ able to impact.

He looks like he would love to be anywhere else.

The feeling is mutual tbh.

As long as Fly is coach then all our tall forwards need to be super strong in the contest. At worst they need to bring the ball to ground.

Under a different style then Ash will probably play well.

he did ok last year. He is thinking too much about failing.

Harsh? Why does everyone tip toe around Ash yet go in boots and all for so many others? To say a player's game is not effort based and then forgive him because we are all different is insane. Effort requires nothing more than a will to give your best in every contest. If a player is not doing that as a minimum at the elite level he has no right to be on the ground.

Effort is the one thing you'd think is a given when a player is given the chance to build a career and set themselves up for life.

If AJ doesn't make it, he joins the long list of "many are drafted, few are chosen". End of story.

Some of the comments here are out of order and out of the spirit that should exist within sport.

if i was his manager i'd try to get a trade out of melbourne. Collingwood "fans" are no good for his footy.

He is a footballer. He gets well paid. When you cross the white line you get judged. That's what happens to elite sportsmen the world over. We are not talking racial abuse or any personal rubbish that crosses the line. People are getting defensive over pure footy criticism and that is ridiculous and a clear double standard given the roasting an endless array of Collingwood players have copped on this forum over the years.

so we should be consistent with our roasting?....for ethical reasons?...morality? As I said in a previous post, I think he needs to get away from fans for his own career enjoyment.

Why haven't you said the same for Coxy, the Brown brothers, Madgen and so many more? Apparently, players don't get roasted in Adelaide, Sydney, Perth or Brisbane.

You know exactly what I am saying. Maybe the Brown brothers should have moved to Siberia given the shellacking they copped.

so did we give them enough shellacking or should we have given them more? Maybe we need to set standards of roasting based on players who were successful because we roasted them...obviously the browns werent in that list....johnson isnt going well...there must be someone....leigh brown? Nathan murphy maybe. We hounded him.

Thats a good point. The beagles hadnt not tried since covid started until harley arrived. I dont listen to the radio or read the media here...maybe they copped it. At least Johnson would be closer to home.

You hoped he would have a good game, but at the back of your mind, you knew it was the wrong decision to select him.

It was a shame it was that bad. I didn't think it was gonna be like that, two quarters not touching the ball. Took a nice mark or two eventually, but it was too late.
Hey Jen, just reflecting on your inside info on Thursday arvo about Pies & AJ possibly parting ways at season’s end, wondering if he knows his papers are stamped & tossed in the towel …….

That would be unfortunate if he had that thought.

But you do wonder if he does need a fresh start. If it would be best for both parties.
