Player Watch Ash Johnson (Delisted 2024)

so did we give them enough shellacking or should we have given them more? Maybe we need to set standards of roasting based on players who were successful because we roasted them...obviously the browns werent in that list....johnson isnt going well...there must be someone....leigh brown? Nathan murphy maybe. We hounded him.
You are writing nonsense. If players are performing poorly on the field they get criticized. The criticism of players not called Ash Johnson on this forum has been intense and ruthless for years without a murmur of protest other than from people who think they are playing okay. But AJ has been a shadow of what he is capable of and when people state this they are suddenly crossing the line or going against the spirit of the game.

I was cheering him on last night and desperately hoping he would do something to boost his flagging confidence, but sadly that didn't happen.

If you think he is playing better than some suggest or offers something we are overlooking then by all means state your case as I often do when Old Coxy is back in the firing line but this implication that criticism of AJ is in some way different or unfair is ridiculous.

i'd like to see effort from johnson, but that doesnt have any impact on johnson whatsoever. It might make me feel good.
Then why do so many get upset when people criticize him? He doesn't even know! We are sharing our opinions with fellow supporters not for the edification of the players.

It's a reflection of the thoughts of collingwood fans across melbourne. He probably comes up against it regularly even if he's smart enough to stay away from this site. twitter etc is everywhere.

He'd know that he's not popular with the pie fans.

One thing that you can be sure of, if he goes elsewhere the fans have played their part. I dont think there's a better club internally to play for than the Pies. So if he chooses another club, it can only be because of the fans.

Not true. Players leave for more money and opportunities.

Ginnivan and Adams didn't leave because of the fans.

i checked and i dont interpret what i wrote as saying that all players who leave do it because of the fans. However, you might have seen words that werent there.

Internally yes the club is great.

If Ash leaves it is because he cannot play the role required to a satisfactory level. Ditto Macrae. It is not only because of the fans.

My unfounded and unproven opinion on AJ is that he was quite good in his early days when he would have just been told to go out and enjoy himself. As the rigorous and reality of AFL set in, he struggles with how we want him to play his role and what's required. This isn't AJ"s fault as he just isn't good enough and that reality may have bought him to the conclusion that he's not up to it.

It's kinda crazy how badly he's fallen away this year. His competitiveness wasn't in question last year when he was forced to hold the second ruck spot and was more competitive than McStay.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a player look so visibly rattled. Quite sad.

i agree. life is complicated and there are different reasons. i'm not saying that his poor attitude is solely because of negativity from fans, but we're not making it any easier on him.

I don't think he necessarily has a poor attitude. Just like with Adams, I think it's hard to play a role that you are not really suited to.

It's a bit like Ben Brown at Melbourne. Melbourne are getting him to play a style and role that he isn't used to. He has been rubbish since leaving the Kangaroos. Ben Brown is a kick mark style forward.

A smart player manager would observe game styles and find a team well suited to his player.

Given the recent comments from Ginni, do we believe an ex-player (who is also a forward) for a supporter?

You can't defend the player to the point that it becomes patronising and disingenuous.

If he's playing bad, he needs to hear the truth, accept the truth and do something about it.

Who does the player need to hear "the truth" from, and how is this feedback delivered in a way that it doesn't become counterproductive?

I thought he was eventually starting to work himself into the game but it was far too little and too late.

Won’t have any trade value now unfortunately but hopefully he can find himself a new home for next year.

Ginnivan didn’t suit us. He’s now a bit more of a star who can march to the beat of his own drum at Hawthorn.

Ash needs somewhere that lets players have more free reign. A smaller club with less pressure from fans etc perhaps. A system based club where you play your designated role, isn’t for him.

From everyone - commentators, supporters, media, coaches.

The commentators were pointing out how bad AJ is playing, including a lack of effort.

I'd like your help to understand how commentators and fans pointing this lack of effort out is meaningfully helpful to AJ.
