Common ground....I've always wanted to see Colbert play either on the wing or on the half-forward flank...and these can be positions where he can set up the play. Perhaps with his physical limitations, Pagan feels that the backline will be less stressful on his body (remember how often people wanted Carey to play in defence to give his body a break...and now Sheedy is thinking of using Hird as a defender for the same reason).
I saw some of the things Colbert did as a midfielder for Geelong - if it wasn't for his knee reconstuction, he was a very good chance of becoming a player in the same class as a Voss or a Hird.
Fo me, the jury is still out on Colbert. Yes, he played a good game if not his best game in a long time but time will tell whether he will play with that consistency.
The bright spot is that he is playing in the backline and with any luck, Pagan will leave him there as it's the best spot for him to gain the confidence that he has lost since he did his knee, broke his leg etc etc. He wont get the confidence that he needs playing in the midfield as his body is not one of a midfielder anymore nor is he a forward player as he lacks the confidence - he has heart but not the confidence.
Also, these two area's would place more pressure on Colbert to perform and that pressure would likely cause him to 'try' too hard and envitably cause mistakes when he could be eased into these position when his natural game and instincts return.
I would like to see him succeed for the sake of the player, the club and most importantly, the supporters. With him in the backline, the ball comes to him, he can find his touch, the pressure is still there to perform and the more confidence he gets, the more he will attack from defence - then, and only then, should Denis start moving him up the ground.
But for now, the pacy, versitile, and gifted player is just a shadow of the player that is today a bravehearted, honest but clumsy and at times, lacking that sound football judgement that seperates a good honest player from a champion.
If anything, l hope Denis can mold him into a Leppitch type player who can hold down a key position down back then move him forward and become a dangerous option - thats the versitility that we lack and thats the versitility that Colbert once possessed (and still possess when that key mindset called confidence returns).
Crackers McKernan - thank god you don't wear the Nth colours anymore (lol).
