Would the insecure soccer trolls just let this thread die?

Australian football is the no. 1 football in Australia, no ammount of hysterical repetitive shrieking about people in China will change that. Soccer can't even get their games on FTA, and the recent series against Asian clubs that was hyped to death by the soccer trolls on here didn't even register a blip on the Australian sporting radar. I'm not sure why, considering the great sporting rivalry Australians share with the citizens of Shanghai

I've noticed you're the biggest idiot of all the delusional AFL fans. First, no one said AFL wasnt the number 1 sport. It clearly is number 1. But if you're gonna sit there and tell me Demetriou isn't worried about what the restructured football (soccer) can achieve in this country, you're wrong. Its been mentioned in articles that soccer is the real competitor to AFL, and not the NRL, which it once was.

Now, soccer cant get games on FTA? you are having a laugh. First of all, Foxtel took a massive gamble in the FIRST season, that was TWO season ago, in arranging a 120 million odd dollar contract to broadcast A-League games + internationals. The internationals were the sweetner for them, beacuse they know how much people watch those. BUTTTTTT, they have seen that there is an unprecedented number of people watching the A-League matches. Close to 300,000 watched the A-League grand final on Foxtel, figures which TV execs figure would have attracted 1,200,000 on FTA, as these events normally average 5 times more on FTA. Not bad for 2 seasons. You can give me shit excuses like not enough goals, or something as lame, but please dont argue about the financial viability of it, otherwise Ill ruin you. Once more people start seeing the sport as actually being profitable in the country, something that wasnt realistic before they got their act together and restructured the game, the AFL will feel it, trust me. I could tell you stories about grass roots right now that the AFL would be very scared of, but whatever, I wont, keep on chugging AFL.

As much as i love football and its is my favorite sport it has nothing in the atmosphere stakes compared to soccer.

I wen't and watched a Serie A game and a English Premier league match last year and it was absolutly unbelievable, then travelled through Germany and went to a few matches through the world cup which blew my mind away, to experience something so nuts was completely overwhelming, even the matches i couldn't make it to and instead watched it on the big screens in a massive strip that runs from the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was nuts, over a million people watching the Germany costa Rica match the sound was electirc, a massive sea of black red and gold as far as the eye could see. It was surreal.

That being said, Australian soccer is poo, it has nothing on what i have experienced in Europe or in AFL.

Guess I'll add my opinion.

I've been to an A League game. The crowd reminds me bit of the cricket. Plenty of chanting and singing and a bit of fun. One Day cricket still beats it easilly though and I find the cricket more exciting than the soccer.

Soccer itself doesn't interest me. I just don't find it entertaining. I didn't grow up on it and can't like it now. Just like a heap of other sports out there.

But saying all this I like the atmosphere at the footy so much more than the cricket and soccer. I go to the footy to watch my team play live. To watch what the cameras don't show. And if the crowd is big enough and plays a part in the game then that is an added bonus. I don't go to the games for the crowd, simply the game.

If I want crowd entertainment I'd go to another sport.

I'll never attend a sporting encounter based on "atmosphere".
The on field action is the reason why I pay money to go. Soccer has very little action and isn't worth even turning the telly on to watch let alone going to the game IMO.

Its a good thing its only your opinion.
There is a reason why Football is called the "World Game".
The only event to surpass the Olympic Games in world wide audiences is the World Cup.. Says something dont you think.

I love the AFL~!!!! Its brilliant to watch.
But unless you are a true Footaball fan, you will never understand :)

Anything you say on the FTA issue can be twisted any way you want.

I could say that AFL needs FTA b/c it wouldn't be able to compete as well if it was only on foxtel, like soccer. It needs to be on FTA to grow. Soccer doesn't get this soft free kick from FTA, and still has grown in 2 short years.

Crosby you idiot. One soccer riot? You're dreaming, they already tried to exploit that with Sean Sowerby over at Channel 9, touch luck media, as we had a number of record crowds following that. Lol...you cant fight class, and thats what the media was trying to do, Ive noticed lately though that they have started to report on soccer more, and have not taken to bashing it, but rather going with the flow. You wish one crowd ruined it, but it wont. Ill tell you this though, every kick backwards, every awful decision, drives one fan from your game. So whos laughing?

Interesting topic,

I'm living in London at the moment and fortuante enough to get free tickets to games every now and then. Before going to my first Prem League match I would have said the atmosphere at the soccer is better. The first match I got to go to was Arsenal V West Ham (a london derby) and I was utterly disapointed. The crowd were way more interested in getting pissed that what was happening on the soccer pitch. And although the odd song would be sang by all the fans of 1 team, the atmosphere didn't compare to aussie rules.

Since that first game i have been to 3 others and come away equally disapointed. That said I am going to England V Brazil on friday and i'm hoping this will change my opinion! Go Brazil!

Seeing as the Arsenal season was over about 10 weeks prior to that, and the faithful knew what a meaningless game that was, why am I not surprised?

Don't get me wrong i get more excited and passionate watching the blues play than the victory and the atmosphere because of this is better for me personally, i still enjoy the atmosphere at the victory games but the passion level is not there quiet yet which makes a difference to ones perception of atmosphere i would suggest.

But globally i dare say some overseas soccer games make us look second rate in the atmosphere stakes, type in Liverpool or Celtic supporters singing you'll never walk alone on youtube or fenerbache supporters in turkey literally rocking the foundations of a 70,000 seater stadium where everybody in the crowd and i mean everybody is on their feet chanting when the game is on, it is AMAZING, something i've never seen at an AFL game unfortunately. I highly recommend for people to check these out, you'll literally freak out!

The only reason people sing at soccer games is because they're trying to keep themselves entertained, that game itself just doesn't do the job.

At the footy, people are worried about the game because there is so much happening, there's no time to sing.

Damage control, why because you haven't experienced sh*t, while others have :)

I find the atmosphere in the crowd in Europe a hell of a lot better than the AFL

That's because you're one eyed. The bloke who went to the Arenal V West Ham match had a neutral point of view.
