Maybe part of his learning?

Quite possibly which I’m cool with. I personally think in this context there’s more value in having Cox or Reid press up to provide body against Vlaustin to practice what might happen in Rd 2 than teaching a kid a lesson that he could get at training from Maynard (not at Vlaustin’s level, but he’s top line). The counter to that is the club may well be confident in their Rd 2 planning and not want to give away too much of their hand in a meaningless scratch match.

As others have said, In this day and age the small forward role is one of the harder positions to play. Put pressure on inside 50 but don’t score much (Blair) or score goals but don’t put enough pressure on (fasolo, krakouer)

Elliot and Stephenson make the grade cause they are truly out of the box. C Brown has a good mixture of pressure and scoreboard impact. Daicos as a small forward is a work in progress

Atu may not get there. But has shown glimpses in the VFL and his tackling has the potential to be a real point of difference up front. Deserves this year and next before a call is made on him.

Would also be good to see them throw him on the ball at times like stoppages in the VFL. Get his hands on it a bit more and more chance to impact the contest with his physicality.

The two fifties were crazy. So long after the whistle, which makes me question his psyche a bit. Little other impact, but he looks fit and lively, so hopefully he has a decent season ahead. Training reports have been strong at least.

Agree 2 very Dumb 50's he gave away

First time in the seniors, playing a hard position to get right, l thought he did ok.
He is a still leaning, a project, there are some amazing predictions on here about the young man after a practice march.
Yes he made some mistakes, who doesn’t.
Let’s see how he is by the end of the season, before sacking him.

I think the problem for Atu is the game on Sunday was his first chance to show something to really get the coaches attention by flashing some potential, but in the end he struggled to get into the contest, didn't look dangerous as a small forward and made some silly mistakes to boot.

I'm hoping he gets a run again next week and shows something, because last week's effort where he really looked out of place is the sort of performance that often consigns a young footballer to "afterthought" status with selectors.

He was hung out to dry by the coaching group allowing him to be isolated v the best defender pound for pound in the league (Vlaustin). Overall it was a reasonable first up performance for a guy we should have no expectations for long term. For instance he was no worse than JT.
Like the coaching group hanging Appleby out to dry against GWS last year. It's like they're angling for them to be delisted.

IMO, both were dudded, however there was a huge discrepancy in overall performance. As I said Atu was no worse than JT whereas Appleby put in the worst individual performance of the decade aside from Beams’ 2011 PF and Steele’s 2018 GF.

Played ordinary in a fairly meaningless practice match. The Sun will keep rising and he will get other opportunities to develop and display his improvement. He has some tools but clearly isn’t ready yet.

Hmmm I saw something in him, it was his first run, clearly has the skills, pace & a tackling machine, like the way he can get back on his feet and recover, if everyone ( including me) writes someone off after 80 odd minutes of footy then we are cooked

Clearly has the skills? His kicking was horrible and he barely laid a tackle without falling over

I think he could be a good role player given his speed and tackling. His kicking needs to improve. Part of it will through composure and experience but cant ever see him ever being a typical mecurial fwd pocket type. Look at the defensive pressure McDonald- Tipuagti puts on for Essnendon in their forward half and I think he could give something similar. However you would prefer Tippa with the ball in hand.

This. The kid has time on his hands still. JT does not & I’m not sure he will still be in our senior 22 at the pointy end.
