Konstas aint it bruh. Neither is Harris or Bancroft for that matter.

Australia is serious trouble for batting, Smith Khawaja are nearly done. We've got head and the inconsistant labuschangne to build around.
That's a bit dramatic. We have plenty of middle order options. Phillipe, Hardie, Inglis, Webster, McSweeney. Just no good openers.

Konstas looks good, yeah he got a duck here, but he’s shown good things in his limited career. Our issue is we need a ready made opener, which we don’t have.

Konstas has all the talent to be a great opener...in 2-3 years. There's still a few glaring weaknesses in his game (inswingers in particular) that he needs to work on that will otherwise get exposed at international level.

Ideally we'd have Pucovski there right now, but we all know what happened there. And the time to pick Bancroft was when he was in form last season. Now he seems mentally shot.

Whiteman is one who I'd like to see in conversations - but I think he's been tossed in the "too old" basket.

What's the record for most first class ducks and how far is Bancroft ahead of the second placed
I'm too lazy to figure out first class, but for Shield ducks of currently active players Bancroft (16) is 6th behind Henriques (20), Bird(19) , Abbott(18), Lyon(17) and Silk (17).

Surprised Whiteman isnt featured in that list really.

Whiteman and Hunt seem to be out of the discussion.

I reckon 2-3 years is a long time, I reckon we may see Konstas sooner.

Puc, what a shame that is.

Hunt was up there but has had a few lean shield seasons....scored a ton this year in the shield if he has a strong season ..chance for next summer

Whiteman is interesting. has scored a ton this year in the shield.....if he does well against Tassie this week could be interesting....and he knows how to leave the ball on a bouncy Perth pitch

Harris & Mcsweeney have the opportunity atm....let's see how they go

but if you are looking for a player in form Inglis......has scored I think 5 shield tons in his 7 shield games....so don't discount him coming in the middle order and marnus going up

Like always it'll ultimately come down to timing.

Hunt was the next big thing a couple of years ago but the incumbents + Harris as backup were pretty settled. Konstas could well follow that same path but may benefit from more opportunity given Khawaja's retirement is around the corner too. Harris has shown that the selectors are willing to carry a player to give them as much opportunity as possible, it's just about breaking into the side in the first place.

That's not to say Hunt will never open for Australia by any means, you really just have to get very lucky with a spot opening up right when you're in decent form/the selectors see something in you that your stats don't show.

Bancs is the epitome of this right now.

Konstas played a poor shot for an opener and Bancroft copped a stinker...but that said I think McSweeney has looked the most compact and composed of the four players in their short stints so far. Bancroft missed two or three chances to nudge one off his hips or pads to not be on strike but kept falling across his stumps. I just don't reckon he's the guy to back in at this stage.
