If they pick Inglis to open, does that give him a licence to play his natural attacking game?

Might mean we are one down for not many.......or we might be one down for a lot at lunch?

Would be a tough call to pick the young NSW guy but I wouldn't be too upset if they did, would be something to look forward to.

is it correct to say that some pretty good openers didn't start there:

David Boon
Justin Langer
Usman Khawaja
Shane Watson
Simon Katich
?

Yeah Langer was a 3 for WA (started out middle order for Aus) and Katich spent a long time in the middle order before moving to 3 at state level, then played a fair bit in the middle order for Australia first. Not sure Watto is a great example but would probably get picked to open if he was around this series so good enough. Shaun Marsh early mid career lower down the order but moved up to 3 fairly quickly - again opened for Australia a decent amount.

Hussey kind of the opposite, opening a lot early career for WA and then more middle/lower at test level.

"Opener as a specialist position" is not consisent with the history of the position in Australia in the past 20 years excepting Hayden, Rogers, Jaques and probably Warner. So about 50% of the time.

Moving someone like McSweeney up from 3/4 to open is pretty much the norm. Inglis a bit less certain given he bats 6/7 but has a compact enough technique. Ultimately they are either going to be good enough to play test cricket or they are not.

We'll be one down for not many, and has been that way with Warner mostly for 2 years anyway. May as well let someone throw the kitchen sink at it like he used to

Yep if the answer is Harris, I'm taking the gamble and opening with Inglis. Not moving the whole order, but opening with Inglis. I'd have liked them to ask him to open with Konstas in the A game, get another keeper in (lets say Phillipe or Harper who cares). Get rid of Bancroft we know what he brings it aint much in this form.
If Inglis gets picked which I don't think will happen....he will bat down the order and marnus will open imo

as I said previously Inglis is a strong chance in the middle order to make his test debut in Sri Lanka against the spin

another issue for Inglis...is that he is going to be playing a pointless white ball series against Pakistan....yes its nice to represent your country....but I reckon you are on a hiding to nothing in the white ball where you have to score quick take more risks ....while his competitors for a test spot will be playing first class cricket against India A. If a player tons up there credits increase IMO

and just quietly we are talking about being 1 down ...well regardless who plays reckon we are going to be 2 or 3 down pretty quick this series....I am not confident with both marnus or smudge atm regardless whatever position they bat and ussie is getting on ...

Then we don’t play Inglis as Smith can barely bat 4 let alone 3 or opening in current form. Just let Inglis open or play Konstas take your pick. One or the other

That was his last score, he's done little since, it's been months ago since he's scored anything. How long is he going off that last innings, and call me silly but I'm not giving him a pass off last summer. I expect him to be there but the bloke has to bowl with Green out if he does a soft tissue injury so be it, Hardie is there if need be. we at times will need that bowling option and no I do not want Marnus trying to be peak Dennis Lillee off his long run thanks

Some real reasons to have concerns but some are being ultra doom and gloomy in here.

In 2023 Usman scored 1210 runs @ 52

Smith scored 929 runs @ 42

People are acting like they are an out and out corpse. They may not be playing at peak levels but i am not willing to write them off yet. Head and Carey are playing as well as they ever have. Marnus a concern and obviously the other opening spot for sure. We have some issues but things are not anywhere near as bad as some are making out.

If you offered Inglis to open just to get in the team I don't think he would turn it down

Noone else will be willing to move up to open though, Smith was the one who was willing and it failed
