Shield sure he’s never been more than that level

If he's never more than that level then why does he consistently outperform the rest of the other contenders?

He wouldn't be the first person that just can't go to the next level despite dominating at a lesser level. Some players just have a mental edge which allows them to step up to the next level despite perhaps been less talented, half the battle in cricket is in your head.

Just pick the 19 year old, what do we have to lose?.... he can clearly bat, just put him in there and hope for the best.

What an infuriating attitude to take to the national team.

In the extreme examples like Will Pucovski and Nic Maddinson, you literally lose players/prospects by picking them on talent before they've earned it.

He'll be primed if he has a couple good shield seasons to come in for Usman after the Ashes next season. Chances are Head is going to open in the tests in SL at the start of next year considering how well he opening in India last BGT, so realistically we just need someone to hold their own this home Summer. Best case scenario imo is that we pick McSweeney, he does well enough to hold his spot for SL, then its just a simple swap in the order for those two.

Renshaw too never managed to turn it around after he was initially dropped, it's a big risk.

Well, it's 4 matches now. Absolutely nothing moronic about not picking a guy that has made 29 runs in his last 8 innings, he is absolutely cooked right now. Could genuinely be a case for him to not be picked in the next WA shield match considering Fanning and Goodwin both came in last week and made runs.
Goodwin is the future

Nail meet head. Cowan spot on.
Takes a former test opener to understand it seems.

Listened to this whole podcast the other day, it was dreadful. Cowan completely exposed himself as someone who has watched absolutely zero domestic cricket recently. The amount of things that him and Middlemas spouted that simply were not accurate was mindblowing. Mugs

As a lifelong Australian cricket fan, I implore the selectors to pick Cameron Bancroft. He's earned his chances & deserves a shot at redemption for being the fall guy for the ball tampering saga. George Bailey, do the right thing & pick him for the 1st test.

He literally played in the first test series he was available to be picked in after his ban ended

That's reasonable but I'm not sure why people would think sending in a player to open against bumrah and co who has essentially never opened in his first class life is going to produce better results. One would argue on the way that Bancroft has previously played at both test and shield level that he's a better bet than what we have. If we are picking mcsweeney it shows how flawed our selection is.
