Think they have to play both Jadeja and Ashwin purely as it is their best shot to make runs and we suck playing Jadeja
They might add KL for the experience. Not that he necessarily deserves the spot.

With Shubman and Rohit out, I would have:
Rahul, Yash, Kohli, Pant, Sarfaraz, Jurel, Jadeja, Nitish, Harshit, Bumrah, Akash.
Remember this is a Perth Test, so we will need 4 four quicks rather than 2 spinners. Nitish did okay with the bat, but I really liked watching him bowl v Aus A. And Harshit is meant to be firey but also averages 42 in FC with the bat. Siraj is out of form at the moment. Also Sarfaraz played the bouncing ball well v NZ, which will work for him in Perth
We have chosen to keep Padikkal back from the A side. So it will look closer to:
Rahul, Yash, Padikkal, Kohli, Pant, Sarfaraz/Jurel, Jadeja, Nitish/Harshit, Bumrah, Akash, Siraj
Once Rohit comes to Australia, and Shubman is injury free, they would take their respective spots in the XI. Hopefully we do go to Washington as the second spinner over Ashwin in the later Tests. And Shami might be on the way back toward the end of the series, so Akash may miss out.
Who is a better keeper? Pant or Jurel. I would still play them both, because they are both useful with the bat in hand, it's just that one will have to field.

I reckon Sarfaraz will have a good series. Looked all at sea vs NZ but I think his combative attitude will put him in good stead on our tracks.

Probably a controversial opinion, but I really think if you've got to Test cricket level you should have found a few personal mentors along the way who you'd probably listen to more than one "foisted" upon you by the "system"
Most of us who've played and watched a lot of cricket have been looking at games thinking "WTF is going on out there!!!". Is it the coaches job to send out the 12th man and say "Hey fellas, the coach is wondering if we might land one in the same half of the pitch to 10 and Jack now that they've made 30 between them in 4 overs of half-track tripe"?
Cos I've seen an awful lot of that while watching various national coaches grinning and typing on their laptops.

I also think coaches are overrated and unnecessary, this is more about taking the piss at your job
I can imagine what my boss would say if I told them I was going overseas for a few days to work my other job in the middle of our busiest time of the year

Not as if the normal coach in McDonald didn't bowl in a test match, somehow I doubt Lyon needs help in being a spinner. He is away for 3-4 days at most, it's a fly in fly out
I agree with you that it's not a good look.
But I'm equally certain there will be some little sweetheart clause in the contract allowing this to happen.
If you "told" your boss you were going elsewhere to work then you probably wouldn't be surprised if they "told" you not to bother coming back.

Question after watching the pre-series thing on Kayo last night.
Everyone seems to be suggesting that Alex Carey is going to carry the Australian batting.
Is this based on anything other than his Shield form??
Not questioning that - he has had a great start to the domestic season but is that what they’re making the assumption on?
He has played 1 admittedly fantastic test knock in recent times (the 98* against NZ) but otherwise passed 50 three times in his last 19 test knocks and in one of those he was bowled neck and crop fairly early on only for the bail to literally rotate and drop back into its groove.
He still has a bit to prove at test level for mine. If he’s the guy that has to lead the run scorers that’s not a great sign for the rest of the batting

I'd be surprised if it's not Khawaja or maybe Lab/Head. Carey will have tests he only bats once. He's in form but doubt it.

Carey is just as hot and cold especially at test level. That said weirdly the side that wins will be the side that gets more out of their 5-7 positions, both sides have elite quicks you'd assume it's going to be tough for the top order
It sounds like Nitish Kumar Reddy is doing well in practice, so maybe he forces his way into the side and they only play one spinner.
It'll be fine. It's not exactly pissing down. Perth's had 1mm in the past week. It'll just be the usual pitch.
The forecast looks reasonable for the next couple of days and pretty good for the match.
I'm sure the groundstaff won't serve up anything underdone. And if they do it won't be the weather's fault.
