Australian cheating at Newlands, where to from here?

Surprised that all three have accepted their bans, where is the players' association arguing that the bans are excessive and that they would not have expected such large penalties for a transgression such as this? Hmm

If they were going to do that why not get Warner to appeal and just throw the appeal case so Warner wins?

1. Why would Warner trust or even speak to them unless it was in writing.

2. Board of Directors are still playing backroom politics trying to find someone to take the blame for the reversal in public perception.

The players Association , albeit Greg Dyer, have commented publicly on the length of the suspensions.
An appeal seems a formality.

I thought I heard that too, then why have the players accepted their bans? Wouldn’t the association have to work with them?

exactly. Doesn't make sense.

The players hate CA. They think CA tried to screw them over on payments.
The players association are in the press slamming CA for it's handling of the sanctions
The sanctions are clearly, objectively way too high for anyone who understands cricket.

It just doesn't add up Warner in particularly would just take the sanctions. Even if legal council said look mate, its going to be tough challenge them (seems unlikely) I would have thought Warner would go over the top and challenge.

CA could either threaten the players with harsher penalties (seems like they have already maxed out on that) or they offered them a deal behind the scenes. I can't see them taking those penalties just to seem like good blokes. Essendon coaches and players had objectively done something wrong and dodgy and they fought their sanctions tooth and nail. I can't see Smith/Warner being weak enough to just take what was given.

Board spill.

Investigation launched into excessive bans for level 2 offences.

New board and CEO reverse bans.

Level 2 offence were dealt with by the ICC.

The lengthy bans were a breach of Section 2.3.5 of the CA Code of Conduct, it captures the bullshit prior to, during and post the ball tampering. Effectively our cricket on filed leaders were full of shit and embarrassed us terribly.

Greg Dyer can **** off. The players have copped it on the chin...no more for him to do. The players were not banned for ball tampering so the precedents being claimed are inaccurate. They were banned basically for admitting to conspiring to cheat which is completely different to a rogue fielder picking at the seam etc. i

He didn't start from the lower class though did he? I thought he went to Mentone Grammar? Admittedly some parents save their arses off to send their kids to good schools but still, thought he had a reasonable upbringing.

Mentone hands out a lot of sport scholarships nowadays- swimmers etc. I'd dare say he was on a sport scholarship back in the day.

this has flummoxed me... why would Warner accept the ban? It just doesn't make any sense unless he is playing chicken with CA and knows they will need to lower the bans.. or CA have promised him to lower the bans.

I don't get it. the players all hate CA. None of them agree with the hefty bans. They wouldn't just accept them.
I guess the other alternative is, if he accepts responsibility, plays nice, makes amends with teammates, then the door might still be open just a little.

How about it is the truth and they haven’t done it before?

What kind of ball tampering do you want confessed?
I suppose it's possible, but in my view, unlikely. The whole narrative is Warner drafted in Bancroft because he thought they were on to him tampering with the ball with his tape. For which Smith would have been standing right by his side for eight hours a day. If they had never done it before, the story about drafting Bancroft in falls down.

Yes and no, Warner felt so victimized and persecuted that’s why he wanted the focus off him as much as possible too, thinking everyone was out to get him.

I think he was just doing what others had done before prior to the 3rd test (sweets and the like)

I actually think a certain level of ball tampering had become an almost accepted practice and everyone generally has turned a blind eye to it.

Actually using sandpaper seems above and beyond normal though.

Also reading the cricinfo article, seems if you are a home side the cameras will mysteriously not show any of your ball tampering anyway. So we could of been doing it through the whole ashes but our cameramen just turned a blind eye. Similar to South Africa this series

I havent followed every Aussie test . But as long as your bowlers were getting savage reverse , thats how long you were cheating with sandpaper .
Players who never got any reverse with the duke ball in England. The claim that they only did it once is very amusing and that only 3 players knew.

I agree this was probably the first time using sandpaper, I also agree that ball tampering is standard behaviour now. My point was that if the players want to come clean, they need to come clean properly. Screw what the other countries are doing or thinking.

Taking into account the events of the last fortnight, here is my 5 biggest cricket flogs update:

1/ Warner.
2/ Kohli.
3/ Rabada.
4/ Broad.
5/ Samuels.

Special mention to:
Bancroft.
Anderson.
Du Plessis.

You've lost me here mate?

R.B. McCosker chairing the cultural review seems like as a good a start as any, unlike Don Argus he has actually played Test cricket and by all accounts is well respected. Not so sure about the independent review when Peever has already declared that Sutherland's job is safe, I'd wait and see what's uncovered first.

Yes, thought this strange too, to say Sutherland's job was safe. Not that I am necessarily advocating for him to go but don't understand why he would be exempt from the review
