Australian cheating at Newlands, where to from here?

Tim Lane was just talking on Macquarie Radio. He believes that SA had accused AU of ball Tampering behind closed doors. As early as the first test.So it looks like a can of worms has been opened.

AB de Villiers said that they were suspicious that Australian players were doing something untoward in the field to get the ball to reverse swing so they asked the cameramen at the ground to see if they could pick up anything which is why they started focusing on Bancroft.

Bancroft was probably chosen to do it because he was more likely to fly under the radar than a big name player like Smith or Warner but he still got caught.

I still can't get over all the grandstanding from the other nations that all have a history of this and other bad behavior. And all the mental gymnastics about how all those other ball tampering incidents weren't actually all that bad and this Australian one is a cricketing tragedy is embarrassing.

There’s a lot of nations out there that have been waiting for Australia to slip up somewhere in sport, and with us being a fairly big cricketing nation, this is music to their ears despite cheating having happened before all over the world, it’s all on Australia right now, he focus is us and how we cheated.

Just have to cop it.

Exactly, others will stuff up again but we have to cop it now.

It’s just how it is, glass houses and all that.

But you have to cop your whack when it comes

That's to be expected. Every nation thinks of itself as the most well-behaved. The truth is, we all have our awful moments. This is Australia's.

What's more surprising is the level of national outrage this has caused. It's like people are shocked that sportsmen aren't infallible characters and will **** up from time to time. I'm pissed off at them for doing what they did, but not to the point that I want them banned for life like I've heard/read today.

I fundamentally don't like the idea of tampering with the ball in the manner they did. So, I'm not happy about that.

But the thing that disgusted me way, way more was them basically using the most junior (in Test career) member of the side as the guy to do it. There's something about that...

Did anyone see how someone tried to make this as "Cricket's #metoo moment"

All these AFL players are calling for bans, people who don't even watch cricket are calling for bans. I tried to explain everything but eh I gave up.

The best analogy I could think of is that using your phone while driving is illegal, everyone does it but if you get caught then you get fined, lose demerit points and are a dumbass.

I agree. There's not much moral high ground to be had by other countries.

As this is now destined to end up horribly Machiavellian do we start the guessing game of who's leaking what? First Fairfax reporting that Starc, Hazelwood, and Lyon are pissed that their names have been associated with this, now the Warner story in the Sun. For the foreseeable I think it's fair to say Australian cricket is f***ed.

I missed the Warner story in the Sun.....I decided to take a break from this mess.....can you quickly summarize?

And if I was really sceptical...money talking now..

Yep our test team will be ****ed for a bit now, going to slide a bit until things get corrected and the dust settles.

Well if i was playing soccer or any other team sport against australia the first sledge would be about the "fair game ethics of australian sporting teams.
If you havent played team sports id imagine you might not understand the unleashing of sledging coming our way and the always asked "i wonder if they cheated line".
Would be heartbraking to have a victory and be put on the spot about your ethics and moral aptitude to the rules.
I'm guessing you've never played team sports

People saying Lehmann should go based on what he's done. Let's say he wasn't involved at all - I think he should go based on what he hasn't.
  • If we believe Smith, he hasn't got a clue what his senior players are up to.
  • If we believe Bancroft, he hasn't got good communication with his younger players either.
  • He took no ownership in an ill-advised press conference 10 minutes after play.
  • He's taken no ownership since and pretty much been missing in action.
Having said all that, I think he's in it up to his Shrek ears.
