Australian cheating at Newlands, where to from here?

Will fit right in then. Unlike Australia, India is always happy to welcome disgraced cheating cricket Captains.
Maybe one day he can be elected to the Indian Parliament.

I’m still sure if this were India and replace the names of smith Bancroft and Warner with kohli pujara and Ashwin, there would of just been deny deny deny and appealing the one match Kohli ban and threatening to go home if their demands weren’t met.

And the ICC would cave

Great news! The head of the Cricket Australia investigation unit has just arrived in South Africa to commence the autopsy as well as looking for missing person "Boof" Lehman, last seen swallowing a 2-way radio a few days ago.

It makes sense Blue. Warner gets abused by a supporter. Lehmann comes out and criticises the behaviour of the crowds, sounding like a moron. Lehmann and Warner get together and say **** it, had enough of being here, lets get one back on these Saffers. Warner and Smith talk, Smith has not got it in him to tell Warner it is not on, he will do anything Warner wants because Smith he has not got the assertiveness and skills needed to be a leader of men. Bancroft is roped into it because he is just starting his test career and wants to fit in with the so called leaders. I reckon Lehmann should be the first person to be given the arse, and It would not surprise me if Saker had something to do with it as well. Lewis was caught ball tampering under Saker's coaching in a Sheffield Shield Final.
I think you are onto something here.

Taking the whole leadership group meeting scenario at face value, and it's hard to believe half the side knows what is going on and the other half doesn't.

But a plan concocted from Warner and Lehmann with tacit approval from Smith and roping in a younger Bancroft... Seems a bit more likely.

Not sure I'd read too much into the Sun article about Warner and the strapping. If he were using the bandages to scuff up the ball I wouldn't have though even he would be stupid enough to tell people so closely aligned to the opposition.

I was with you up until the part when you thought he wouldn't be stupid enough.

You'd like to think so anyway....

Plus the Sun are known shit stirrers.

I don't doubt the potential validity of using strapping to scuff the ball. Surely no one would then go and tell blokes who play county cricket alongside your opposition? Surely

The sun also claimed that racism and homophobia are used by our current side.

Probably club baby seals in their spare time too

Why haven't we heard from Uncle Fester?

He probably told Smith & Bancroft to do a presser where they admit everything and say the heirarchy knew nothing about it...laughing so hard that they were silly enough to do it that he burst a blood vessel & had to be taken to hospital.

OR

Gutless.

Take your pick.

I think you and The Passenger are spot on and as much as they say we got caught on our first time, honest guv, the presser details released were just weird. I would be comfortable with all mentioned not being part of Australian teams ever again apart from Bancroft although his lack of talent might have the same ramifications.

Isn’t Bancroft our leading run scorer this series?

Many here in the past, as well as the media, used to enjoy taking potshots at Michael Clarke, and how he was a terrible captain.

On the flip side, certain media outlets seem to gush about Steve Smith and how he was a great captain, and almost overcompensated on how they ran down Clarke by going on and on about how wonderful Steve Smith was as a captain and a person.

But now, even his biggest critics have to admit that, say what you want about Michael Clarke's captaincy, but at least he never cheated as captain. He may not have been everyone's mate, and may not be how a captain looked or drove a car that Australian cricket captains are meant to drive, but at least he never did what Steve Smith allowed as captain.

Therefore, on this act alone, Steve Smith is a worse Australian cricket captain than Michael Clarke ever was.

I can't remember anything like this in all my years of watching the game, to have an Australian captain come out and admit that he cheats is a bit of a Dylan goes electric moment for me. So where too now, who will captain the team in the next Test, what sanctions will be applied to others? The ramifications of this will be deeply felt and have long term consequences.

This is the biggest Australian cricket scandal since the "Underarm" incident, and I wouldn't be surprised, if back in the 80's if we had had the internet, if people would have been asking those same questions then.

Smith has also never been Clarke's equal as a captain tactically. Not even close.

Steve Smith's captaincy had been pretty shaky anyway. It did seem like he had the team united, although that will have been split totally by his reference to the "leadership group" knowing about this plan, and later reports suggest Lyon, Hazlewood and Starc are fuming to have been implicated in this. Those 3 would find it very hard to play under Smith's leadership again, assuming those reports are correct.

Tactically Smith has never been strong. Tactically Clarke is as good as captain of any international team in the last 30 years.

Credit where credit is due, has any nation in the history of world cricket ever trolled Australia quite as effectively as the South Africa have this past month? They've flogged us to pieces on the scoreboard, sledged us to the point of incoherent rage on and off the field, and somehow managed to get the captain to completely trash his and the coaches reputation beyond the point of no return.

With carefully directed effort and some judicious application to mental pressure points delivered under cover of those idiotic sounding accents, they have somehow presided over the total obliteration of Australian cricket.

Well played saffers, well played.

We'll never know if Smith was a good captain or not. Sure he had the "C" next to his name but the coach has been calling all the shots since Clarke left.

"To suggest that Bancroft did not know the rules - the explanation offered for Peter Handscomb's suggestion that Smith ask the dressing room about a DRS referral in India last year - would be pointless: ball tampering is, rightly or wrongly, among cricket's most-high profile taboos - just ask Faf du Plessis. Indeed, Bancroft admitted to nervousness about a knowing attempt to rough up the ball illegally with the eyes of the world on Newlands. They knew this was wrong even as they contemplated it. To quote a detective observing a crime scene in the film Insomnia: "This guy crossed the line and he didn't even blink. You don't come back from that."

The thing is, too, that he brought something out of the dressing room to use on the ball.

This isn't a momentarily thing of using a bit of sand, or stones on the ground to rough up the ball. It wasn't a case of Bancroft seeing something at his disposal on the field and, in a moment of weakness, doing it. To bring up the tape meant that it was planned, and that, I think in the eyes of most, has made it worse.

One thing it does. It means no more moral high ground and finger-waving at the behaviour of other countries. It is like the saying "Point the finger at someone, and there could be ten pointing back at you".

I hope what emerges from this is a more respectful, and humble Australian cricket team who don't send stupid tweets or sledge on the field, but shut up and restrict their "hate" to wanting to beat their opposition on the cricket field.

I can’t help but feel that Bancroft is just being raised he wrong way, he is young, but a 1-2 year suspension to me seems enough. Boof, Smith, Warner and anyone else who had a lot to do with it after the investigation should be banned for life.
