all well and good to point the finger elsewhere but don't both clubs supply a time keeper as to stop cheating. next i spose the darly timekeeper will be blamed as being on the ballarat payroll. if u are looking for reasons why u lost blame the players and coaches that is who is at fault.
CHING CHING

Libba signed for two years but will only coach for 08. Does not mean a lot. Eastern ranges definately have him on the radar. He played under 18's there and then completed a traineeship in sports administration there.

Either Mark Johnson or Mark Power to coach Sunbury in 09.
Surely B.Jordan is your man.

Libba and his cronies did nothing for Sunbury. They will prob be glad if he goes. And why Power? wont that be repeating history?
I've heard whispers that Redan coach is getting closer to announcement and one club insider told me "you'll be happy with him"
He wouldn't say any more. Anyone got any mail?

My mail is Mark Verberne to coach Redan in 09. He has just bought a house back in Ballarat. He coached with Freeland and Ellis in 08, and they might form part of his panel.

It's time for the highly anticipated (not really but gotta pump up my own tyres) grand final player rankings.

It was a remarkable contest and for mine it was noteable for the fact that a single player or group of players who dominated the contest, it was a game full of honest four quarter performances.

OK here I go, I'm sure everyone will disagree with me but i'll give it a shot

Ballarat

8
Aaron Brennan - good solid game in the ruck
Mark Nunn - presented really well and was consistent throughout. His battle with Shaun Deckert was a highlight.
Nigel Otto - his first quarter was vital in keeping the Swans in touch early.

7
Chris Thornton - liked his game, thought he had a super finals series
Ash Baker - will always be remembers for the that goal but had a pretty good day on top of that.
Adam Sewell
Corey Grills

6
Aaron Nunn
Wil McGregor
Sam Harkin - scored some important goals at key moments of the game
Nathan Anderson
Tristan May
Josh Caldow

5
Sam Caldow
Bowen Harvey
Matthew McVilly
Daniel Thompson

4
Joe Otto - didn't have a huge impact
Brad Anderson - losses points for a yellow card

3
Mark Cunningham - very quiet

1
Ricky Allan - didn't realise he was playing until he collected his premiership medal. Had a shocker but at least he didn't miss from 20-metres out

Darley
7
Jarrod Edwards
Chris McGill - good game but may be haunted by his late miss
Brent Smithwick - worked hard to create space, was probably underutilised by Devils who tended to be overly Newman-centric.
Travis Stephenson - battled hard in the ruck
Shaun Deckert - as I mentioned earlier his battle with Mark Nunn was a highlight.

6
Matthew Cape
Lachlan Herring
Darren Leonard - didn't have a huge first half but his efforts in the third term helped kickstart the Devils

5
Drew Edwards - Pants early by Nigel Otto but improved as the game went on
Brad Miller - didn't have his usual impact. Did some good things but loses points for the yellow card
Adrian Newman - looked rusty at times. Tried to break open the packs but wasted too many opportunities
Ben Robbins
Luke Guerra
Jarryd King
Kyle Doyle - super young talent who had a shocker in the first half, looked like the occassion got the better of him. Once settled after half time showed his real ability.

4
Travis Edwards
Adam Bell

3
Leigh Freestone
David Young -little impact, got a yellow card, forgettable finals series overall
Travis Minns - extremely quiet and the less said about that miss the better

2
Rob Cheevers - his day was over by half time after breaking down again. His class was sorely missed after half time.

Think your wrong with D.Young he played on Allen and after he had carved Darley up early in their 2 previous games held Allen statless?

Both clubs do supply timekeepers for the reason confusia said. Darley's is Gordon Closter and anyone who know's Gordy or knows anything about the characters of the Darley Football Club can tell you that Gordy bleeds the black and white of the Devils and has selflessly given so much to the club over the decades that to hint that there was any inpropriety in the timekeepers is just wrong.

Ultimately the better side on the day won. confusia say has got it right

The question has to be asked, why did Newman play loose man in the backline the whole last quarter? He looked like the only player that could win the game. Even when Ballarat got even they kept him down back, surely Darley should have tried to win the game. Newman was clearly their best player and if he had of kicked straight he could have kicked 8+ goals but the whole last qtr was played down back even though they were only 15 points up. Terrible coaching by Learmonth. Shouldn't have played Cheevers, and no way should have kept Newman back as he looked like the matchwinner early on and Ballarat didn't have a good match-up for him all day.

And D.Edwards has to be the worst player ever to be named in the team of the year. In the 2nd semi he didn't go near Rick Allan, played on Nige Otto. Nige went off early with a foot injury and copped abuse from the big tough guy as he hobbled off. Otto returned in the 2nd half on one leg and kicked 3.3 on Drew Edwards. Edwards was the player that showed absolutley no respect to Otto and the Ballarat players, and gave them the extra motivation to beat them if they got another chance. Ballarat were rapt when Edwards went to Otto at the start of the Grand Final because they knew Edwards was the worst player in Darleys side. Otto proved that by kicking 3 goals into the breeze and setting the game alight. Darley supporters can't even try justify his inclusion into the team of the year beacause he got found out twice on the big stage by a bloke who was only 50% fit.

Should have had him up forward in the last term. At least he could had kicked a goal from 20-30 metres out, unlike Minns and McGill. Newman played with a bad shoulder. He needed 2 people to help him get his jumper off in the rooms after the game. and it was heavily strapped. As for Chevers, the thursday night before the game (the final training session) he barley did anything at all. Instead of playing an injured bloke, could have played guys like Gav Miller and Ross Gundry from the 2s.

Can somone confirm if club timekeepers are used in grand finals or is it two independent timekeepers appointed by the league?

I heard Garry Hocking is gonna coach redan in 2009
I like the Verbene theory of those two. I think that appointing Buddha to the job might end up a bit like Libba at Sunbury - a one year mistake.
Redan football manager was at VFL preliminary last Sunday _ maybe to speak with someone?
Bit odd to miss premiership celebrations and best and fairest count.

Sunbury performed better under Power in 07 than the high priced recruit in Libba - also the players he will bring to the club will be ones to win a flag. If Sunbury had the side they did in 07 they would have easily won 08.

If Power is coach in 2009, all the players that went to Moama, like McCabe, Lobb. will they all becoming back?

Yes - he may also have a couple of handy players that played at Riddell. A couple of young kids that are very good. If he has the 60k spent on Libba to pay players they will be very strong again.

I think this works both ways KA. I know there were players (and some commitee) at Sunbury that were happy to see Power go and a very handy player returned because Power had gone.

What players returned because Power left? Tim Little is the only one I can think of. He signed at another club before seasons end. Power would have shipped him anyway.

Players need to be loyal to a club not a coach. If it is the other way around the coach can hold a club to ransom. eg. if he were to leave, x amount of players would leave the club. A club can't let itself be put in that position.

What's the history/story of Verbene KTB? Sounds like he might be good...Also, who's the football manager at Redan?

I would hope so but as like always they will let it slide.
Half the Darley idiots causing the trouble. I hadn't seen at any games all year.
I was there on sat and seen what happened at three quarter time, everyone is talking about what the devil supporters did, what about the ballarat supporter that got stuck into B Miller or the other ballarat supporter that tried to bottle a devil supporter, i dont here anyone talking about that!

Agree. Not just Darley supporters.

Seems to be some new names poppin up lately on here.

New identity's darley?

My memory is a bit dim but Mark Verbene was a very good back half player in the Redan comeback premierships 02-03.
He played in those games with Aaron Freeland (ex North) and the handy (and tough) Paul Ellis.
All three have been down at Altona recently with Verbene coming along a bit later after playing in the amateurs.
This year Freeland was senior coach and Verbene the reserves coach as far as I can find out. I believe Altona won a Div 2 premiership under Freeland when he first went there. I dont know how Altona performed this year but I suppose that's easy enough to find out.
Verbene is or was a PE/computer teacher in Melbourne according to the Redan website.
I also heard today that about 30 had been interviewed for the job at Redan (and that came from another BFL coach who is one of those). Still you know what the rumours are at this time of year. :)
Damian Ross (also ex-North?) is the director of football at Redan.
Not too sure about the Hocking thing. It doesn't sound like the Redan method of the past few years. I wonder who approached who (if he is involved at all).
Hope that is of some help. I THINK most of it is right!
