We are just as bad as them, and their midfield is MUCH better than ours!

Really?

Scott Thompson V Tayte Pears?
Nathan Grima V Cale Hooker?
Michael Firrito V Dustin Fletcher?

Scott Gumbleton V Lachlan Hansen?
David Hale V Michael Hurley?

Jobe Watson V Andrew Swallow?

Now go away and think about it first Bombersno1.. please. That I think is a conscientious thinking around here.

There isn't alot between some of those players.
Hale obviously being the outliar.

I think an injured Petrie definately hurts that comparison too.

I'd have Grima well ahead of Hooker, rest you could probaly throw a blanket over.

Harvey vs Winderlich?

Bastinac vs Welsh?

Ziebell vs Lonergan?

Wells vs Dempsey?

Thomas vs Monfries?

Our rucks definately stack up.

Calling us shithouse is a bit of a stretch I would of thought.

I agree with the comments on how frustrating it is to see average players look so good against us.

James Kelly is not an "elite" midfielder ffs. ELITE?! In the same bracket as Ablett, Judd, Hayes etc? Get your hand off it.

He's not even close to "A grade".

He's an OK player that looks a shit load better in an amazing side. Throw him into our midfield and he's another Prismall. Throw him into West Coast's and he's another Kerr, or worse.

Some facts:
Kelly's Stats for 2010 (Rnds 1-12):
Total Disposals: 256 (Avg / game = 21.3) ranked 7th in team
Tackles: 62 (Avg / game = 5.2) ranked equal 1st in team

Not bad stats for a player "not even close to A grade" (WTF?) - esp. considering he is "competing" for those possessions with an elite group of other midfielders... Throw him into most (or all) other midfields and he undoubtedly holds his own or *improves* them (esp. in Essendon's case)...

look, kelly is a *good* player. not A-grade by any means. has he ever been tagged playing in the midfield?

good players are made to look much better when your team is flying. i remember back to 1999-2001 and on reflection, we had some good, ordinary players who looked like world beaters, because we were so dominant.

He's right, Blumfield, Heffernan etc. were good players who were able to dominate because of the depth and quality we had in those years.

Kelly is a very good player, a gun even. But he's not elite, a term I think gets bandied around too often.

Kelly comparisons to Prismall are unfair however, at Geelong Prismall never went close to performing like Kelly has. I hope and think he will lift to become and important player for us, but at the moment give me Kelly anyday.

Oh, please don't throw possession tallies at me.

He's playing, as you say, as the 7th midfielder in an amazing side, surrounded by at least three A-grade midfielders.

He's never copping a tag, and he's nearly always playing in a dominant midfield and side.

As has been mentioned, look at Blumfield/Heffernan; Blumfield was touted as the next big thing at one stage. Look at Daniel Kerr; he's gone from a superstar to any other player without Judd and Cousins carrying the load.

Also, I'll give you this stat:

Prismall's Stats for 2008 (12 games):
Total Disposals: 257 (Avg / game = 21.5)

Are you also of the opinion that Brent Prismall was close to an "A Grade" midfielder in his final year at Geelong?

Statistically he was better than Kelly this year.

Wouldn't have called Prismall "A Grade" at Geelong, but he was improving. That's half the reason we're pissed off at him walking out - he was in the senior side. It's not like he wasn't getting a game, because he was.

I think Kelly's disposal would put him just ahead of Prismall. Plus I guess flexibility - he played all of last season in the backline and was terrific.

Well ahead is a bit of a stretch.

Harvey is a superstar and has been for 10 years and is that far in front of Winderlich its not funny and Ziebell is an up and coming young gun who is miles in front of Lonergan. Its fine to love your own players but some serious objectivity is required when making these comparisons. Otherwise it just sounds ridiculous.

I think most didn't bother to respond because the comparisons weren't even close.

Lonergan's not in our best 22, for starters, let alone our midfield.

Bastinac vs Welsh is the only appropriate one there, and were they the same age, people would be be saying "Welsh", IMO.

I found Ziebell a hard comparison, he isn't a type the Bombers really have tbh.

I think you being a bit facetious there with Welsh.

Bastinac is averging as many disposals this season, as Welsh has in any of his seasons to date, he averages as many contested possessions, more clearances and first possessions;

and he's 18 years old, and 74kg's wringing wet.

He's going to be a serious player with 8-10kg's on that frame.
