That is not correct. To play in 2009 he only needs to get picked up in one of the drafts at the end of the year (and of course satisfy any requirements of the AFL). As the previous poster pointed out, Stuart Dew was not on anyone's list last year yet is playing this year, so why would Cousins be any different. All Cousins needs is a full pre-season and he will be a star again next year. The guy is a gun.

Here is the article that states all details about his intention to return and what he must do by June 30th.

June 30th is also his 30th Birthday........Spooky......

Obviously with players that get drafted from country leagues (Luke Vogels is one that leaps to mind), you don't need to be a reg player with the VFL/WAFL-- an affiliated country league is good enough.

Would be very very surprised if no Victorian club would touch him. The Pahhhr would be the only non-Vic club that might (unless Freo have a wide perverse streak). Because of the tarnish that now attaches to him, no sane club would pick him sight-unseen without interviews, vetting etc.

Therefore, if there's a club that he has an 'in principle' deal with, it's in the interests of that club to talk down his return and deny any interest (and Cousins to meet his end of the deal by either making himself scarce when other clubs call, or sounding lukewarm when they interview him), so they can use their 4th round pick on him rather than having to use their 2nd.

Is a non-current AFL player allowed to nominate only for the PSD, and not the ND?

Chick and Embley didnt have a punch up over judds girlfriend it was when chick was supposed to be looking after cousins when his girlfriend dumped him

Can he play in Vic Country after that date

Judd has mention that he has spoken to Cousins a couple of times this year, once in Age article and the recent one was on the couch. And I'm sure I saw a photograph of them having coffee in some paper. I don't think they are great mates but I think Judd is smart enough to waste his time hating a guy with a serious problem.

Regarding the Chick/Embley fight, the other story was the fight was about Embley bringing over Ben ex-girlfriend over to Chick's house when they were 'busy' with some girls and etc....

Love to see him back but I reckon its more likely that he won't play again.

yeah spot on the story was that cousins was drugged up and with girls and embley bought cousins girl or exgirl around to where he was which is why chick had a fight with embley

the other story is a load of crap as you would of seen when judd was injured he and cousins would hang out during a game
strange that seeing cousins was with judds girlfriend:rolleyes:

and yes he does have to play footy with some league to play afl again he has to nominate a club before june 30

he can nominate for either draft and someone will take him for sure
if he nominates for the national it will be first served after probaly pick 30 when it starts to dry up a little

i would think he will end up in melbourne and you would think it would be between coll - st kilda - ess and rich maybe even the roos

hmm... Reilly, Vince, Porplyzia, Cousins, Knights, Dangerfield... its a pretty good midfield rotation plus others to go through

id take him at a low cost why not nothing to lose

Take him in a heart beat.

Pay him whatever he wants as long as there is a clause in his contract making it null and void if he has any indescretions.

Let's not forget, Kerr and Judd were under Cousins wing in their early years.

Imagine what he could do with with a young midfield.

Would love to see him at the Pies.

DITTO!!

wouldn't care whatever he did to make him perform....

eagles sure as hell didnt, and he played a huge role in their latest premiership. Gimme one of those.

hypothetical.

It is West Coast's turn to pick and Cousins is the best player available in the draft.

Do West Coast pick him?

No.

I think he will go to Collingwood. Not sure if I could see the Bombers having a punt on him.

Imagine the first Pies-Blues game. Would be wild.

looks like 12 days was right?

CONFESSED drug addict Ben Cousins will play state league football this year, his first major step in resuming an AFL career in 2009.

It's believed Cousins will register with a VFL team before Monday's deadline.

It's possible Cousins, who is in Perth, may register to play in the WAFL.

But indications last night were he was likely to move to Victoria in the coming weeks and restart his football career.

Cousins is expected to fill out the necessary paperwork to play VFL, which would include a playing contract.

AFL rules do not allow him to play for VFL clubs Collingwood and Geelong – effectively AFL reserves teams – which means Cousins will play for one of 12 VFL clubs, including Tasmania.

As of late last night, the complex situation means the club Cousins would play for is not aware of his intentions.

Carlie Merenda, of Flying Start management group, flew to Perth last night to finalise Cousins' immediate future.

"Carlie will be in Perth over the next four or five days doing a number of things for Ben, a part of which is informing him of the processes that need to be put in place by Monday, if he wants to play footy," Flying Start boss Ricky Nixon said last night.

"That's something Ben will have to make a decision on over the weekend, which includes which state, which club, etc etc."

Nixon said it was "more likely than unlikely" Cousins would play VFL this year.

Several AFL clubs have contacted Nixon about Cousins playing for them next year and this step is the strongest indication yet Cousins will attempt an AFL comeback in 2009.

It's believed one club has said it would draft Cousins if he was mentally and physically fit, and if he makes himself available.

That Cousins, a Brownlow medallist, premiership player and former West Coast captain, is embarking on this pathway strongly suggests that an AFL comeback beckons.
"Ben was given a process by the AFL and he accepts that. He wants to go through that process and he wants to show at this stage he's capable of going through that process," Nixon said.

The AFL Commission, in announcing its 12-month deregistration of Cousins in November, said Cousins would be free to play this year, subject to state league constitutions.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said last night: "He's entitled to register. That's fine if he wants to play this year. We've always said that if he wants to run around this year, it would be good for him."

Demetriou was supportive of a Cousins comeback.

"If it's part of his rehabilitation process and it helps him get back to good health and playing footy is part of that, absolutely (it is good for him)," he said.

AFL Victoria chief executive Peter Schwab said last night he was not aware of Cousins' intentions of signing with a team.

"I haven't heard," Schwab said. "But if he makes an application, if he applies the right way, and the forms correctly, I can't see any issue with it."

Port Melbourne, which was linked to Cousins earlier in the season, said last night it had not spoken to Cousins or his representatives.

Cousins just bought a 1.25 million dollar unit at the Burswood could this mean he will be staying in WA if he returns to footy or will he just sell it and move elsewhere?? if a Vic side wants him?

Source?

Do they have any ties with an AFL side?

That's a tricky one. They are currently melbourne's affiliate, but they will change to st. kilda's affiliate next season. But if he was going to them because of an AFL club, then it would be melbourne.

As much as i'd love him in the red & blue, i can't see it happenning. We're at least 2 years off finals, and he'll be almost finished by then.

But Sandy are one of the more successful VFL sides, so maybe he just want to join a good side in a beach-side suburb?

I like Collingwood, Geelong and Hawthorn at those odds.

Maybe Melbourne give Cousins one million for a one year contact and get him through the pre season draft and then bet a million at $12 to get out of debt.

Wayne Britian is kidding himself if he thinks he wouldn't draft Cousins if he was left at the bottom of the draft.

The Richmond assistant coach was spot on

``You just can't say: `No, we're not going to go after Ben Cousins,''' Royal told SEN.

``Probably we'll look at it two ways, as long as he's fully rehabilitated, does he come into our midfield? Does he take the spot of one of our up-and-coming developing midfielders? That could be the case.

``Or does he come into your midfield with his experience of being a Brownlow medallist, a premiership player, a captain, does he come in and actually teach your midfielders certain aspects of the game which have helped him over the years?

"So you can look at both sides of things.''
