Go the Bats!
G’day Mick7 .. but I’ll call you RayJay like you asked.

Your post was a bit short mate.

I take it that it’s not to do about a Heath Ledger movie, moreso a keenness to rah for the Batters this year.

Goorambat have to be congratulated for agreeing to the opening round against Longwood at Redlegs Stadium on April 4 as a “twilight” game. A move really to aim to test for more games under lights in the future.
‘Cause a 6 o’clock finish on the last day of daylight saving will still be 5 o’clock in “the old money”!

Rumour has it that because ANZAC Day is on a Saturday, Swanpool host Longwood at the Benalla Showies under lights on the preceding Frid’y night .. and that makes sense.

But RayJay old Cobber .. More info. What’s Karl Bibby doing up in the Mallee?

Cheers mate.

News hot of the press, coach and players walk @ tatong. Very good source, very disappointing only days before first game!

well i dunno how true this is bu i got told by some1 it was the president that got rid of him dunno how true that is i was in the pub wen i got told about it hope they can field a side on the weekend

Hello all!!
Just writing to wish all the teams the best of luck in season 2009, may it be a successful year to you all in this final year of B&D!
GO LEGGERS!!!!!!:thumbsu:

I hope the Tatong Fc do manage to field a side this weekend/season!! I have been a big fan of the footy club since I started in this comp, it would be a real shame to see them unsuccessful this year after such a great year last season. i hope the club continues to show improvement and with us manage to give the Doon boys a massive shake up!

I can tell you it wasnt all about the $.
But now there is a few players not playing because the club simply hasnt got the money to pay them what they want.
Im not sure what other people think, but that is piss weak, and the club would be better off without them. It is no wonder why the league is in trouble when players are chasing nothing but personal glory. Lets be honest, if they were any good they wouldnt be playing B&D.

Why did the teams in this comp not step up 10 years ago? Teams like Thornton-Eildon, Violet Town, Alexandra, Benalla All Blacks could have saved this.

Everyone I speak to about this says that the fact the B&D never got into Junior sport is the reason why they are suffering.

Get kids involved and they will stick around. Play 12 a side if you have to & if both clubs have 21.... then play with 21. I also think the KDFL should do this with Under 14s... I admit many don't share my view.

If you have ever been involved with a bush footy comp with 4ths, you will see how good it is for the entire club, but hey... B&D need 3rds first.

I hear what your saying "iwantanotherflag"but I know at Longwood, and pretty sure as with the other four clubs there is just not the numbers to even play 12 a side games.Even if a club could manage to get enough to have a game once or twice a year it would be better than not at all.The future of BDFL clubs has always been a year to year propersition as most players are imports(some paid and some not),there is simply not enough locals to feild 2 senior sides each week let alone junior sides as well.Unfortunitley the work required each year to keep a club alive is left to usually the same half a dozen or so people and eventually if they drop off the club will fold.Perhaps an option would be to get all the kids from the five clubs to form a side or two if numbers permit and enter a local junior comp and play as the BDFL.I understand the logistics of that senario would make it very difficult with travel e.t.c. but we must give these kids a chance to play footy for a team that at least resembles something of there home club. Its a tough one for sure but clubs are on borrowed time unless they can have some sort of junior program.Good luck to all for 2009

I Know 30 or so years ago when my dada was still in school around the Stawell area there was a footy comp created that meant all the junior guys in the area would be split into North, South, East & west, depending on which area of the town you lived in. This apparently worked really well and all of the young guys involved wore their pride on their sleeve for their respective area of their towns. Could be an option I guess, it would be good to try out anyway!!:thumbsu:

G’day “I want anotherie just like the otherie”!
Mate you are on the right beat; as well as AJKax “Specko” and Go Leggers. But I must give you a bit of history and “the politics of dancing” about the BDFNL and the VCFL.
Thirty years ago the BDFL was regarded as a “Minor” league by the VCFL, along with the O&K and the KDFL, under the Major Leagues.
Nowadays; and also with the advent of the Bushies in the North-East, the VCFL have re-classified to Major Leagues ( run by a Board with professionals .. obviously GVFL and O&M), the elite Bushies are based in Wang to feed off those major leagues for the AFL, and then we have Minor Leagues at the level of O&K and KDFL .. which, in recent economies have had to bend to paying bigger $s to compete to survive. Why do they deserve $x per game except for their own profiteering?
As far as a “District” League like the BDFL have been treated, they are regarded as no more than a pimple on wart .. which, you could imagine would be very painful.
I could go on to espouse the role of BDFL clubs in their local communities but do y’ know ..bashing your head against a brick wall for 60 seconds gives you the same weight loss as making love to your wife twice in the one night! I know which one I’d prefer..
It has been proposed that some form of junior footy is the answer. I best make my points in ..erh .. point form.
~ My son, a tall gangly kid played in the ‘90s in a truly great surviving Wang Junior FL and loved it. I soon came to realise that when he played in the ‘90s it was more about promoting the elite to go on to Rovers or Maggies thirds than giving “unco” kids a chance to develop.
~ By Two thou I couldn’t help it and lost friends by being too critical in the local press. Nowadays the Wang JFL has its highest grade as Under 16 ( As against U171/2 back then). Allows the kids and their parents to play junior footy without compromising their Saturday afternoon senior footy interests.
~ Moreso. They have a plan after age 16 to have those not recruited to O&M to pick a thirds Club in O&K to enjoy Club footy .. which in my mind is what “after junior footy” is all about.
The outcome of a proposal by the BDFL to work with the Benalla Junior league 3 years ago to form thirds in the BDFL was dismissed by the Benalla Junior League admin .. no discussion entered into. The VCFL said “You guys work it out”. A washing of the hands Pontious Pilot?
At one meeting (in 2006) I asked, “why is the BJFL still under 17 when the Wang JFL is now under16?”. The answer from the VCFL was that as from 2005 junior leagues can go no higher than under 16 but a dispensation was given to BJFL due to the longevity of its league. Which effectively ended any chance of the Benalla Football League developing thirds.
From Longwood’s point of view, the Seymour League (which had overflowing teams from nearby Euroa) was under 15 until 2007. Longwood could see a window for a third’s team of Under 17 in the BDFL where the Euroa over 15s could be on a one year registration .. then .. if wanting to be .. free agents. For many reasons including today’s footy climate .. it didn’t happen.
To finish .. and I hope I haven’t taken up too much room and that my thoughts are constructive .. the Redlegs hope to get through 2009 then after the demise of the BDFL move to the KDFNL in 2010.
However, I read this week in the Shepp News that Ardmona .. who defaulted on thirds in 2008 .. and cannot muster an under age side in 2009 are going to be fined $4000 under the constitution of the Kyabram and District Football League.
Someone needs to move that their constitution be changed .. retrospectively .. and everyone needs to realise that as kids from country towns and farms leave the district after year 12 for study / employment the ranks are diminishing .. especially as we only have 2-3 kids now anyway!
Hope I haven’t bored you too much “IWAF” , but my heart is sold to country footy and the Redlegs and Blue from Longwood.
Cheers mate

G’day Slimbo
Thanks for the support .. and the hearts have it!
Heart a “liddle bit” heavy after the Batters pummelled us at Redlegs Stadium today .. winning all five games of footy and netter.
But the concept of a late start (didn’t need the lights in AEDTime natch), reaped more benefit for our sport and is a point to be pursued.
As the seniors finished at 5.50 p.m. the Goorambat Club stayed on to join in and for the first time I’ve ever seen in my 40 year involvement with BDFNL footy, at 7.00 pm we had the BOG’s and BOC’s presentation with both Clubs making the awards, one after another.
Cripes I really felt all warm and fuzzy!! But it was a great day for both Clubs .. ‘cept for the results for us .. natch.
Longwood footy team have only started – definitely not finished .. but the talls and talent for the Bats will; as I’ve always said make them a walk up start for the O&K next year.

I once played mid week basketball and we called ourselves the “Nads”. Our cheer was “Go Nads”.
How’s this for a kick in the “basketballs”!

On ANZAC day we go away to Swanpool and; with respect to the Diggers, sport can’t start until after 1.30pm. Negotiations were in place with the Swannies to play under lights at the Benalla Showies on the Friday night. Some-one, some-body .. or maybe the oriental fella we all know as “some ..” ;
but I digress!!
Some how .. that arrangement has been overruled as the ground has to “preserved” for the All Blacks game on the afternoon of 25/4/09.

Geez the support for the BDFNL is great – even in its own town – ain’t it!
But stay tuned .. more developments to come.

Cheers
John Carrot
Go Leggers .. Go Nads!!

School based footy competitions are great but there needs to be a stage where the school stops and local clubs take over.

If school comps went U-11, U-13, U-15. That would leave the kids a good year or two in district clubs.

Go Leggers .. Go Nads!!

Just checked the O&K draw, Blacks play at Glenrowan on Anzac day.:confused::confused:

Bonnie doon had a good win over tatong by what iv heard is it gunna be a competitive competition this year or a 1 sided comp???

Well said "big spread"! How on earth do you justify any player payments to pwkers demanding it from Clubs less than a major league. Where is the ROI (Return On Investment) to the Minor/District Club .. except paying for a shallow premiership.
If there is such thing as an "economic" downturn afterall, you'll find some of these mercenaries will be loathe to make the trip up to the bush.
Once the individual payments are out of minor league footy, old blokes like myself from Longwood and especially Barry Lewis from Tatong will have some respect for the blokes chasing the footy rather than some of the cr(w)ankers chasing the quid!
Cheers
