As I understand it CM he is still a current Essendon VFL player so the issue is how much football is he actually going to play for the Maine. I guess what is really critical, as per Monti and Toma, is can you get them back for finals and improve your team out of sight at the right time of the year.

They are also well connected to his brother and were attempting to get him to also align if he was with a VFL club.

Has been doing preseason with Collingwood and looked like being added to the senior list, but unfortunately ripped a hamstring off the bone at training yesterday and will miss three months. Same thing happened to him at St Kilda last year.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he now starts his season with the Pies, likely as a VFL aligned player as well.

Teakle will get the spot ahead of him, will he sign at maine? It'll take a while to get up to vfl from that injury

I’m sure they will be having the conversation and having his brother already couldn’t hurt.

You’d think he won’t play footy until May, might get a few games in then while he gets back up to speed.

Great to see the pioneers system working its magic. 6 from sandhurst and 2 from Mildura

What a shit show !

Which Sandhurst kids shouldn't have made it and which Mildura kids missed out?

Mildura always have plenty, is that just from Mildura fc, or from the sunraysia region?

But really how is this system fair on Mildura kids and their parents to watch every weekend? Surely with the dilution of talent now playing in the tac cup from school football we bin it and come up with a better system, rather than 17 and 18 year old kids trekking all over the state every weekend, where maybe 1 kid not on a school scholarship will get a spot on the list out of 40.

Maybe the afl do a study and see the vce scores these kids get, with all this travel?

4 x SFL, 7 x CMFL, 6 x GVFL, 5 x MFL.

Until there is a boarding facility in Bendigo it will always be problematic ! Having some 16,17 and 18 year olds living by themselves is a recipe for disaster. Others are luckier and have a good host family but the costs associated are huge. There was talk a few years ago that the Mildura based players and their families liked the SANFL model. Closer than Melbourne with a good state league U/18 competition.

Most GV and MFL clubs are with the Bushrangers so it skews it somewhat.

Which probably makes their representation look even better?
Or is their SFA from those league’s other clubs in the Bushrangers - don’t they tend to selected heavily weighted to the north East leagues/clubs rather than GV region of their zone?

Anyone got time to put up a comparison of numbers from the pre-season training squad named last year to final squad by ALL the leagues?
Surely you would expect most lads to come from the strongest league (and as a flow on the strongest club?) in the catchment region rather than allocation on post code?
Remember some families opt out also.

Will the under 18s be still in existence in 10 years given AFL obsession to copy anything that exists in the USA? The best kids are already in “college system” of private schools and limited to games they play for pioneers, rebels, falcons, bushrangers. Wouldn’t the kids who arent on a scholarship, parents can’t afford big bucks to go to private school be better served playing locally rather than a diluted statewide comp and at same time be able to devote more quality time to year 11, 12 studies in comfort of their own home.

It takes on a massive region, there's no old no mallee league clubs or north central is there represented, there's being plenty of the best talent come from those areas in the past.

The gv is only echuca rochy and ky Isn't it and Moama, Echuca United and tongala, so 6 clubs provide 11 players and 6 from sandy ?

Half the Castlemaine 92 premiership side got a crack at AFL level directly from club footy. System seemed to work ok then.

The question is like to ask is why does every single regular Pioneers session during the week happen at Epsom?

They are supposed to be representing a region, not a town yet anyone from south of Bendigo has to make the trip right across town in heavy traffic twice or more a week. It’s a huge advantage to be a Bendigo resident and quite unfair. Surely training should rotate around the region at the very least.

Imagine driving from Swan hill or nyah forrest? Castlemaine aren't that hardly done by

Entire pioneers program needs someone from outside with no pre existing relationships ( cliques) and shake the tree. The monkeys will fall out and go back to coach club footy where best suited

Let’s put the 17-18 year olds best interests first and foremost. How is travelling those long distances in Pionees region you speak of a win for player, parent or grandparent who gets the job of driving. Thinking a lot of kids in Rebels system might be going to big schools in Ballarat where the rebels based. But not the case in bushies where Shaun Atley lived at Corryong went to school in Wodonga and travelled to wang for training. Gippsland power draws in kids from Orbost, Bairnsdale and power hq is three & two hours away respectively in Morwell. Surely
There has to be better way

If the AFL HQ took a step back and said their role was to grow all footy not simply create a program for the National Comp the they could consider

1. The dollars from the Pioneers (and all other TAC teams) could fund full scholarships to the top 5 players for each region to a Melbourne / Ballarat or Geelong Private School.
2. The remainder of the squad would stay in Clubland and play 3 or 4 interleague /rep games during the season. There could be a Sunraysia rep team etc.
3. The Vic Country team would be selected from both - which is where players need to play well to be selected.

This gives quality young players rep footy opportunities while embedding those who are really not going to be drafted to stay in clubland.

There might be a few lessjobs for the boys at TAC level, but not sure that would be a bad thing.

They will be training in Swan Hill Tuesday’s for this region and then Bendigo Thursdays. They also had a couple of whole squad training sessions in Swan Hill during the preseason including the 2km time trial last weekend.

Isn't there only 6 from the central murray, how do 6 train?

Do kids Still jump in the car at 230 to get training, missing school? I like the idea above about 4_5 getting scolarships, the rest playing senior footy and having under 21 interleague only
Training with u16 squad. Their are around 16 or so from the area that will train there as it’s closer than Bendigo

How does that work? Players only training as a whole group together for 1 day a week in a semi professional environment?

No wonder there's zero flags to show, how can players gell together with that setup? It's just relying on talent. The amount of money used to facilitate the league and we've got this? Players would be far better playing major league senior footy in Bendigo.

They have trained together twice a week for years for those zero flags. I suppose they are trying something different.
