To each their own but I disagree with proposal put forward in this thread re: returning juniors attracting additional points, which I see as almost aggressively counterintuitive.
Surely we want high level footballers giving back to their junior clubs & some reward for clubs prioritising the development of their young people?

I’d prefer to see the teams that have made finals 20 years in a row lose points to bring them back to the field

The following will still compete on 28 points in the BFL

Strath
Square
Sandhurst
Gisborne

It’s just this easy

I agree.

I know that some dislike the system which is fine but given the intended purpose, 43+ points does seem excessive for all but those struggling to field a competitive side.

I disagree. A player that has come through a local junior system must remain a one pointer for life at that club. We want to encourage local clubs to put the work into their catchment zones to keep the game alive.

If that’s the case then the points system is never going to achieve the outcomes AFL Victoria implemented it for.

It’s not going to equalise anything, it’s just a hugely flawed loyalty scheme.

I completely reject the notion clubs would change anything they do in their local area because the number of points a handful of players carry is discounted by less.

I also don’t believe points have any impact on a player choosing where they play.

They are already only using those numbers of points because of all discounts, which is why nothing has changed!

Yes but if some of the clubs improve and there is actual pressure on the points then after a few seasons it will work. Sandhurst having a Castlemaine 3 point fringe player would mean they wouldn’t get a game and go back to a club where they get a chance - it’s still easy to work out IMO

And the copp out that the standard of the Leauge will drop is just crap - those clubs are already running out under those points so how does it effect the standard.

Anyway maybe that a new regional manager has been put in place he may drive the changes needed.

How long have we had points now? 7 years?

None of those clubs has ever been under points pressure and never will. The only clubs who will ever be under points pressure are the battlers trying to bro g in players to build a team.

Sandhurst, Square and Strath would have 80 players aged 16-18 on their books.
Castlemaine and Maryborough would be lucky to have half that. Nothing to do with any club, it’s just simple population and because of that the point system as it stands in heavily in favour of clubs with access to more juniors.

You can't just drop the points in one league, or make it harder for Greene, tardew, henderson play at their home clubs, because they'll just play in the ammos, gv, Ballarat, Geelong, North central.

It has to be implemented state wide, the premier ammo clubs are playing in the high 40s, Andrew dillion and Gil looked after them. Ammos should be 25 points, metro 28, finals clubs with unis in the town like in geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Albury low 30s mid 30s for clubs in the same league in finals and high 30s for clubs outside finals. Leagues like picola should have the highest in the state.

I agree with grass kat and nesko mous should be in place between a minor and major league that allows guys under 24, to come into major league as 1 pointers and major league players over 32 to go to a minor league as 1 point.

We want to encourage the best juniors to come back as 1 pointers not 4 or 5 pointers

If Greene and Tardrew were 4 points rather than one, Sandhurst would still have 14 points up their sleeve on Saturday just gone.

I’m still yet to understand how assigning someone a reasonable amount of points is discouraging them to play.
So if dusty and brodes come back to maine next year, instead of being 2 points combined they're what 10, 9? Dusty might say to Jack riewoldt come play 6 games plus finals with me, but because these guys aren't classified as 1 point players, they can't fit in riewoldt? Who loses out? bendigo footy

You seriously suggesting if Riewoldt wanted to play the Magpies would say no thanks mate, can’t fit you in?

They have points they can’t use and rightly so.

If they had improved and dropped points then they would have to leave a couple out. If that happened to Sandhurst now K Flat or South could raid them and take the guys tipped out who could play seniors and get better money with them.

Just like a strong AFL club has to tip guys out to fit in the salary cap. And we’d have a better more interesting competition for it.

You can't just say golden square sandhurst strath need to play on low points. I just looked at the a grade ammos, who play on 45 points, the essendon league play on 46 points. No wonder country footy standard across most leagues has dropped. These clubs have under 19s as well, I'm sure 10 of these kids at each club could play senior footy, why not drop their points to high 20s or low 30s

This doesn't really answer your question but you need to look at it holistically to the team. Often the struggling teams have huge points left but as they improve, they typically use the points as they recruit 3-5 players each season. By not having locals at 1 point (if played AFL/VFL etc.) that absorbs a lot of the points and prohibits them recruiting. Often when involves in recruiting you are selling a message or vision - we've signed a gun CHF from EDFL, so and so is coming back etc. and players sign on because the team is improving. Having a local returning at the same points as a gun recruit from Melb doesn't help the team or the comp. It would also likely stop teams in the LVFL & HDFL pushing their locals to go to the BFL or GVFL.

How many points did each side play with?😆
That’s right the goods old days…
Sandhursts side was built off young guys like vigus, atkinson, Fitzgerald, perez, Hawthorne, keown, stagg, Woodford.

They added Andrews for grunt, gathercole, metro and borchy, so I'd think under 40 points.

Gisborne mainly local guns with elsum, Elliott, Davis the action attraction machine duff Tyler.

I wonder how many points forrest would have given the Barham bros, Fitzgerald and Saunders

Elsum and Reaper weren’t locals, they were recruited from Kyneton. I don’t think Elliot was a local either. Fitzgerald I don’t believe ever played any state league footy, only TAC Cup.
