The digs at Westy

I wasn’t intending to have a dig at him, just wanting to read the story in the Addy.

Having said that Clouds is spot on, you must be all over the famous one a few years ago with a cricketing incident. That one even made it to Castlemaine.

Yep, make some room. Its the "Bendigo Advertiser" premiership cup for a reason...

Wonder what they will call it if the Addy ceases to exist. At the current rate of shrinkage it will be a newsletter in a few years.

Not really up with my Bendigo cricket history but remember years ago there was an incident with Westy’s club, (Think it was Kangaroo Flat?) maybe a player getting reported or the like.

Apparently Westy’s pen ran out of ink and he didn’t manage to report on it or he played it down or some such.

Reckon there was a bit of a campaign to get it talked about in other local media outlets from some disgruntled locals. Didn’t mean much to me but I’m sure it would be well remembered by local cricketers up that way though.

Got absolutely nothing to do with
me at all…I’ve got no idea what you are talking about.

For what its worth I think westy does a good job with what he has to work with. Always been good with me anyway

Give what a rest?

What will this mean for the culture!!!???
I’d say a reset of culture, clubs have evs and flows and they’ve made a decision whether that's good or bad. They'll need to reset things, put things in place and go again.

Not to long ago Bernie was the coach and this is not to dissimilar to that scenario.

They didn't reapply, is that the same thing?

It's good to get fresh ideas into footy club boards, I wouldn't read too much into it
Do still think it's rather odd, perhaps not unprecedented, what has gone on here.
Club legend coaches team to first flag in ages, gets the chop at season's end, for reasons not fully explained other than it is the outcome of some post-season review. Spin for "we've had you in the gun for a while".
They've just won a premiership in a great match.
Square should be still basking in the glory of the triumph and getting down to business of going back-to-back, but there has been an exodus of players, admittedly some are at end of careers and naturally go bush.
And the reserves coach who has no doubt had a front row seat to what is going on between coach and sections of the committee takes over in record time of the decision to tip toe coach.
Bit to unpack there, but no wonder there is interest in this story.

Getting back to on field matters, given 90% of recruiting is done by Xmas these days we are starting to get a picture.

My take would be that only Castlemaine has definitely improved their list which has to be at least a slight concern.

For me Sandhurst still sit out in front, next tier I have Eaglehawk and Gisborne, haven’t heard a lot about either but seem to have at least held ground.

Next tier is Strath and Square rounding out 5, Castlemaine has moved past South and K Flat and Maryborough clearly bottom two.

Probably the most interest at this point is if Maine can challenge Strath or Square for 5th spot. Otherwise it already shapes as another pretty bland season.

Eaglehawk have leaked a few good ones from a side that only made a Semi Final. Sandhurst & Gisborne front runners & South have a couple up their sleeve to announce and if they get a couple more should be top5 maybe top 3. Square will still be a pretty reasonable side. Castlemaine possibly the hardest Club to get a read on they will improve but they would need to be drastically better to play finals.

Good to see you actually talking about on field matters.

To me the two most important clubs to the health of the BFNL are Gisborne and Castlemaine. Gisborne as they have been a consistent powerhouse since they arrived in the league decades ago which has created great rivalries with the likes of Golden Square and Eaglehawk and a much needed strong supporter base outside of Bendigo. Castlemaine, if they could enjoy some success, would create massive interest. If Castlemaine don't make the finals this year it is important they just continue to be stable, keep and attract good players and improve until they do. I reckon if Castlemaine could make the finals they would generate really good crowds.

Some think I am strong supporter of the present BFNL Board purely because I am a Sandhurst supporter. I am not, but I really dislike the personal character attacks on individuals doing there best. I believe efforts to sustain/improve football in the area should come from the Board representing its clubs and not some AFL imposed body. Years ago the Board rejected a two tiered Goldfields relegation/promotion competition where the strong clubs in the Bendigo and Ballarat would form Division 1 and the weaker Clubs Division 2. The Advertiser at the time also knocked the idea. It was the right of both to oppose the idea, but since then neither have offered any fresh ideas in return. It can be noted that at the time Kyneton was for the Goldfields proposal. Since then the competition has just drifted pretending all is well.

I continue to believe Divisional football (with clubs moving up and down between the divisions) would create new interest but I know many will oppose it. The point I am making is at the end of the day any changes should be driven by the BFNL clubs, not be forced on them. To do this and remove present perceptions, real or not, of the BFNL Board being pro Bendigo clubs I believe the Board should be made up of delegates from all the clubs. (Say 2 from each club). Don't think for a moment Golden Square and Sandhurst are going to form some Bendigo based coalition. They hate one another's guts. Also don't think there is a lot of love between Castlemaine and Gisborne.

Out of left field I also suggest no points limitation or salary cap being placed on Castlemaine, Maryborough and Kangaroo Flat until they make the finals 3 years in a row. Also love to see the end of the Pioneers. Probably being unrealistic, but just love seeing a 17 year old take a BFNL game by the scruff of the neck the way Day-Wicks did last year. Years ago the Bendigo League had a statewide reputation for its youth going on to the likes of Carlton in the then VFL. Tanks to the Pioneers no chance of that reputation returning.

Good to see you actually talking about on field matters.

Did you just say that and then write three paragraphs about off field matters? 😂

I agree with everything you said though, especially the divisional stuff. That needs to be done, even if it means the end of netball games automatically aligning with football.

I hope the BFL is heeding your words because of the two most important clubs are indeed Gisborne and Castlemaine then they are in huge trouble. One will leave before long and the other is hanging on by a thread to survival.
