Benny Gale to the NRL

Gale's resume and achievements at Richmond could give him any sporting CEO job in the country if the timing was right and the job was available. He's got the credibility and results to back it up.

I don't see him jumping ship to the NRL though. He is an AFL man through and through, and a Melbourne man. Eventually he will be high up in the AFL.

He's performatively a Tassie man no?

I am not particularly bothered by this. Gale is just another executive on a huge salary that doesn't do anywhere near enough to earn that salary.

I'd only be bothered if he could turn the NRL around.

Your need to pump up your own tyres on your employment history suggests to me you feel insecure.

My comments have not mentioned any club, nor did the OP - being nice, what post are you replying to, maybe ask your EA/exec sec.

Yes, very insecure. I will get my PA to talk to your people about it.

It isn't about our bunnies actually, it is about the NRL and Gale.

Just another tigers thread from yourself based on nothing. Even less than nothing for reasons I have already stated.

Gale has pulled an underperforming entity from a very ordinary performer to a leader, on & off field, that makes him valuable outside sport imho.
Exec salaries more generally need a hair cut & it will happen

It is the work on Richmond's culture imo that makes him most attractive to the NRL.

Can you imagine the abuse and scorn from Sydney RL types when this ship eventually starts to sink? From an AFL background he would be on a hiding to nothing.

Yep, like Eddie heading up Channel 9, they hounded him out of Sydney.

Let 'em sink or swim by their own hand.

I suspect given my employment history I have more of a handle on corporate structures than your good self. I may also know people within the club, hence my remark "he has no interest in the head job of the AFL. He feels his work isn't complete at Richmond". Now given the unfortunate pandemic that is now upon us, he will be even less inclined to go anywhere.

Brian Cook's work wasn't done at Geelong but he would have taken the AFL top job.

I honestly can tell you, Gale has no interest in it. And thank christ for that from a tiger perspective.

Eddie heading up Channel 9 was a monumentally stupid decision.

But Gale running a sporting organisation with a similar enough culture is very very different.

Yeah, Gale isn't going to front the Richmond linament sniffer brigade and go "Hey folks, thanks for all your money you donated, I'm off to the AFL as soon as I get the chance."

I dont really care about all the speculation, and I agree somewhat with your sentiment around CEO's in general

BUT,

If there's one executive that has earned their keep, it's BG. Taking us from a basketcase, in debt with little cultural standing or on field success... to a very well structured organisation, a reputation for the best culture in the sport (not saying others dont also have good culture), no debt (before COVID19), the largest membership base in AFL history, sustained onfield success and arguably the biggest sporting club in the land (and no I am not getting into that argument). It's fait to say he's easily earnt what hes been getting paid.

More than a few NRL teams will go under because of COVID19. I wouldn't be surprised if the NRL is a twelve team comp in the coming years.

Yeah, hard to see them maintaining the smaller clubs, never adjusted to the proper socialist system like the AFL, and not enough $$$ floating round the rugby league ecosystem to go piratical capitalism like soccer.

Completely, some would say he's done the impossible with the Tiges - but things are only impossible til someone does it.

You can see why he'd be in demand.

Anyone could see why they he would be in demand...

But like with anything, just because there is a demand for something or someone, it doesn't mean there will be the appetite for that something or someone to change.

Just like coaches, any club in their right mind over the last 5 years that needed a new coach would love to get Clarko out of Hawthorn, you can see the demand, does it mean there was ever a real possibility, I doubt it, but the only person who could answer that is Clarko. We all have to take his actions as his intent, and signing contract extensions, suggests it's not really a possibility

There are plenty of challenges outside sport that might appeal.
