Prediction Best 22 for Round One, 2017

Crap, I really can't decide on the 22.... I want Bolton in... Then I want Lennon in too...

Then I think nah let's stack up the midfield and let our resting mids be the forwards...

Then I remember Castagna's game against the Bulldogs and want him in...

This doesn't even necessarily mean good depth, it just means I can't bloody wait for the season to start and have no idea what our best side looks like.

for example: Do we want Sam Lloyd in, who is probably good for 40-45 goals a year but doesn't do much in the midfield and is kinda slow, bit of a liability when it comes to forward pressure.

OR

Do we want Jason Castagna in, who might kick 15-25 goals a year (he kicked 3 alone against the Dogs), but can also provide a much better chop out in the centre than Lloyd, with his hardness and pace, and allow Dusty and/or Cotchin and/or Caddy a little more time forward, possibly adding a further 10-20 goals to their own seasons.

WHICH IS THE BETTER TRADE OFF ?! ?!

I'll take one more crack BEFORE the JLT series, and then another before round 1:

B: Dylan Grimes - David Astbury - Jake Batchelor

HB:
Bachar Houli - Alex Rance - Oleg Markov

C:
Trent Cotchin - Nick Vlastuin - Kamdyn McIntosh

HF:
Josh Caddy - Ben Griffiths - Shane Edwards

F:
Daniel Rioli - Jack Riewoldt - Dustin Martin

R:
Toby Nankervis OR Shaun Hampson - Dion Prestia - Reece Conca

Int:
Corey Ellis - Brandon Ellis - Jason Castagna - one of Shaun Grigg/Anthony Miles/Connor Menadue/Jack Graham

You didn't really have a crack at all.
You listed 26 players!! ;)

Who are these 15?
It would be the team I selected less most of the kids recruited in the last 2 years and as I said I rated Vlas 15+ it would actually be 14 others. I have time for Vlas and feel he is a solid contributor but a foot soldier only at this stage of his career. Plus it's just my opinion of where he sits in the pecking order. I hope he goes into the middle and guns it. I am not going to name 14 others that I will then have to argue over for each of thems merrit v Vlas.

For your own exercise, try to find a Richmond top 10 without him in it. I'd be stoked if one existed.

This doesn't really mean anything except for the fact that the list could drop of severely after about our top five and the rest are making up numbers afterwards.
He's in my top ten , but I would like to see him build up his endurance like Mitchell bc ATM he's slow as treacle and has as much puff as the powder puff girls.
He's like a lot of Tigers on the list branded with potential , but need to do a truck load of work to overcome their deficiencies.
I have high hopes that he can do it , but Richmondization has a strong pull the other way. He could easily hide for 250 games like Newman at an average level and nobody would blink an eyelid bc stability and leadership would get him a game over quality and ability to be an A grade footballer.

Surely you are taking the piss playing Conca before Miles?

I'd take the 40 goals every day of the week. Lloyd would have to have had a terrible pre-season or be injured for him to be missing round 1 after last years efforts.

Nah, not at all.
We now have Vlastuin, Prestia and Caddy there to do Miles role and Conca offers more run than Miles
Can't play em all.
i have thought about this as well, can we play all of Cotch/Dusty/Prestia/Miles/Caddy all in the same side with Vlaustuin playing in the middle as well as Conca?
i'd reckon the answer is no

Vlastuin will predominantly play half back flank like always.
Reading the story on Caddy last week, he's here to play midfield.
Prestia is a midfielder and won't play anywhere else.
Our captain will play largely midfield and so will Martin, who might spend 30 per cent down forward.
So opportunities are rare. Vlastuin will be part of a rotation including Edwards, possibly Conca, BEllis and Grigg, who will account for a small portion of midfield time.

Good midfields bat pretty deep though. Dusty, Cotch and Caddy can spend time forward too. I bet Vlas plays back because we will need him there.

Seen so many teams posted here with Caddy on a flank or in the pocket?
Didnt he come here to play more midfield?
Id be shocked if our midfield a large % of the time didnt include caddy
unless hes struggling then i dont know, can he go fwd?

Not many have had Conca in the back pocket, but he does add some flair and if he gets up and running could be interesting. I think he has Short and Castagna and Menadue covered right now, so maybe...

I don't mind this line-up. I personally would put in Short or Castagna instead of Conca, but Conca would be decent there whole injury-free I guess.

Short and Castagna probably have the runs on the board and will start ahead of conca. Then it depends on whether we are winning or not. Hardwick has his neck on the line every round. So when players drop off in form they should be straight out. It'll be interesting to see how perennial favourites like Edwards Houli, Grigg, &Hunt go at selection table.

I can select 10 without Vlas as I (my opinion only ) obviously don't rate him as highly as you. Happy for him to be in my side, however, as previously stated I only see him as a fair contributor and feel he needs to improve significantly to be a top 10 type.

But you've got him at 11? o_O

How about this? Hope to phase Graham in at some point.

This looks pretty nice.
I'd probably put in Short for Conca as a backman. And I'm hoping Lennon tears it up in the preseason games to get the half forward gig, probably at the expense of Edwards.

Oh, and Riewoldt at FF for Reiwoldt.
