I find it depressing if we recruit a player as crap as Cordy, and he's a lock.

New coach, well actually a whole new set of coaches bar one, so all bets are off.

And not just with Cordy, but with a lot of players.

Players like Bytel for example are chomping at the bit, and he is now in ripper nick out to impress as he knows that many spots are up for grabs IF you are good enough at doing what the new coaches want done.

Competition for a spot in the 23 for round 1 is going to be fierce.

Just look at the battle for a place on the wing: Hill, Wood, Dmac, Billings, Nasiah.

How and where does Jones fit in?

I do hope the mindset that that we are building for 2024 on remains so that most weeks some of our younger players are getting some games over the course of the season. ie Sharman, Bytel etc and say maybe Heath and Peris getting a game(not regular, buta taste) by seasons end just to expose them to AFL level football.

There has nothing to suggest he is a lock in the side.

And even if he was, he plays a specialist position and did so in a side that made a couple of grand finals while he was there. So maybe your assessment of a crap players is a long way off.

Thanks Highlander35 for the formatting😃

It will be tough at selection. Ive gone with below considering Hayes and Gresh may not be ready.

backline I think has a good combination of lockdown and attack. Think NWM would be great to give the hbf role. I just can't see how Cordy will be in a starting 22. It would mean a better player is at Sandy.

centre line a bit of a statement with Hill back to Wing and Sincs in the center. Dmack as the defensive winger. Windy, Ross and Owens can all rotate thru there.

Sharman seems to be impressing on the track so think he will be rewarded with the chf spot.

Sandy should be strong. Backline may be a bit tall, but should be very strong. Whole side is actually tall - 9 players over 190. Mids look amazing

The coaches change, the seasons change, and the players change. What never changes is the irrational disrespect for a two-time B&F winner who just had a really good season.
More the fact that we’re building to challenge and that Ross doesn’t have the scope to become an A-grade midfielder.
I’d be hopeful that a combination of Windhager, Bytel, Ownes, Phillipou, NWM & Clark are close to overtaking both Crouch and Ross within the next 24 months otherwise we’re still a long way off contention.

Every premiership team has it's role players. Not every player can be A grade.

No they can’t, but typically role players and younger developing types, not 30+ year olds.
My statement is what it is. We need NWM, Owens, Phillipou, Bytel, Clark & Windhager at a minimum pushing the likes of Webster, Butler, Ross & Wood out of our side if we’re going to find ourselves back in contention.

There's a difference in phrasing between:

"Our younger brigade start making statements and on weight of form find themselves in the starting lineup, ideally challenging various older players for spots in the seniors rather than competing for the same 3-4 spots."

and

"We need to start moving past (list of players) to be good"

That has a similar meaning in a practical sense but a way more accurate turn of phrase.

We've been saying that a new lot of mids were taking over since Lenny Hayes was playing.

I don’t think we’ve had a young midfield nucleus like this since we were challenging though.
We spent the best part of a decade trying to find midfield gems with 3rd rounders and rookie picks.

They look better stocks but until they prove something they are just potential. Some players don't start hitting their straps until mid 20s going by our history so putting them in our best 22 over established players might be a bit early.
